“You stole a car?” I asked in disbelief. Jack rolled his eyes as he held the passenger door open to a Dodge Turbo. “Will you just get in?” he said impatiently. I looked around, feeling extremely paranoid. “It didn’t have an alarm?” I asked. Jack began to get annoyed. “I was in the army; I know how to disable things like car alarms; now, GET IN THE CAR!” he demanded. I threw my hand up and climbed into the passenger side. “Okay; don’t get so touchy!” I said defensively. As soon as the door shut behind me, Jack stepped on the gas. I quickly grabbed the seatbelt and put it on. “Let’s not get into another accident, okay?” I asked, feeling a little afraid of Jack’s new driving style. Although I like the movie, this isn’t Fast and the Furious, okay, Vin Diesel? Jack pointed to the clock on the dashboard. It read 6:07pm. My heart began to pound.
“What are you doing? Stomp on the gas!” I yelled at him. Jack rolled his eyes and continued to speed as he returned onto the highway. “How much more until we get to Ruckshire?” I asked, not sure if I wanted to know the answer to that question. Jack shrugged his shoulders. “I think maybe an hour or so…” he replied. My heart began to pound faster. “Jack, you have to drive fast,” I said, hoping that I wouldn’t be too late. Jack nodded. “Let’s just hope there aren’t any cops out there, just waiting to hand out a ticket…” he said reluctantly. I laid my head on the headrest, realizing that Jack had stolen a car. “You could get arrested, Jack,” I said suddenly. Jack was silent for a minute. “It’s okay… I’ll return it,” he joked. I was growing annoyed of his attitude. He always seemed to say the wrong things… “No, it’s not okay. The cops will find you, and they will arrest you for stealing the car. And it is all because of me…”
Jack threw his hands up in the air. “It’s not always about you, Kat!” he yelled. I was shocked at his outburst. “Do you know what I was doing before you came along? I was chopping wood and cooking for my mom. How does that compare to being in combat on the field in battle?” I was silent. I hadn’t thought about what Jack’s life was like. “When I found you in the woods that day, it was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to me since I came back from Iraq. You make things interesting, Kat. I haven’t felt this alive since I was in the war. I don’t care what happens now. I’m going to help you fight, and I’m not going to look back…” he stated in that way that made it seem like it was the law. I was quiet for a minute, when I decided to turn the radio on. “… I can’t believe Matt Reiner just pushed Dan Mare over the sideline…” Ugh, sports… I changed the station. “…we’re always on; enjoy your work day with light rock on Wednesday, October 20…” I was so shocked. It had been over a month since I disappeared? Impossible…
Time had flown by so fast. I was so grateful for the time I got to spend with Sam, even if it was the only time I’ll ever spend with him… Stop thinking like everything is all ready over! I’m not giving up this time! Sam came all the way here to save me, and it’s not going to be in vain… I dozed off listening to Hoobastank’s “The Reason,” thinking that Sam was my reason… When my eyes opened, I watched the sign that said, “Welcome to Ruckshire,” pass us by. I sat up in my seat as I glanced over at the clock. It read, “7:35 pm.” I looked over at Jack. “We’re almost there,” he said. I looked up into the sky; it was pitch black. Somehow, that made me more nervous. Levi must have set the time on purpose because it would be more effective… It was working.
Everything looked familiar, yet somehow different. It hadn’t been that long since I left, but it felt almost unreal to be back home again. The car slowed to a stop as we stopped in front of Zelda’s pizzeria. I was shocked to see the little diner. I had only worked there for a few days, but those people were so kind. I wondered what Zelda was doing, but there was no time for that. I got out of the car, but my curiosity got the best of me, and I had to look through the window into the diner. I saw Zelda staring right back at me in shock. She just stared at me, as if I were a ghost. “Kat, let’s go,” I heard Jack say. I turned back to him and began walking, more like running, down the sidewalk towards my house. Zelda ran out after me. “Kat?” she yelled. I didn’t dare turn back. There was no time to explain anything. I had to get to the house before it was too late. “Kat!” I heard her yell again. I turned the corner and ran up the street to my house.
It felt so surreal. I was heading for the door, when Jack stopped me. “Wait,” he whispered. “What?” I asked, feeling extremely impatient and frantic. “He’s in there, and he’s obviously set up some sort of trap. We have to think like soldiers,” he whispered. I rolled my eyes. “Okay, general, lead the way,” I replied putting my hand out to motion for him to go in front of me. I watched as he pulled something out of the back of his pants. As it came into the view of the street lights, I was in shock. It was a gun. “You have a gun?” I asked in surprise. Jack looked at me with a look that said, come on; do I look like a guy who wouldn’t have a gun? I shrugged my shoulders and pushed Jack forward. We went around to the back of the house as Jack looked through the windows. “There’s a shadow of someone in that window,” he whispered as we neared the back door. I nodded. “That’s my living room,” I whispered back.
My heart began to pound like crazy as Jack put his hand on the door handle of my back door. I looked around me as memories of Sam flooded into my mind. I remembered that night he came to this very spot and tried to convince me to run away with him… Jack was a real soldier because he managed to get the back door open without so much as a creak. We quietly tiptoed inside. I began to hear voices, which told me that everyone was still alive… for the most part. “You really think she’s going to come save you, Sam? Well, I know for a fact that she isn’t coming. I had a FRIEND come and finish the job I had started…” I heard Levi’s devilish voice say. “You didn’t…” I heard Sam’s husky voice reply. Oh, that voice… It felt so good to hear that voice again. “I did; she’s dead, Sam. I finally finished the job I was meant to finish…” Levi stated.
“KAT! MY BABY!” I heard Sarah scream. “You monster!” she yelled. I heard Levi’s devilish laugh, and that sent chills up my spine. I just wanted to grab Jack’s gun and shoot Levi in the head; just end it… But I knew that wouldn’t help matters, considering I had no idea what we were really up against. Jack began to inch forward, trying to see into the living room. “You’re lying,” I heard Sam say. “What do you mean? Why would I lie about something like that?” Levi asked, sounding a bit annoyed. “You wouldn’t be holding us hostage if she was dead. Your whole job is to kill her, so why would you still need us if she was all ready dead?” Smart, intelligent, Samuel… How I love thee… “Nothing gets past you, does it, Sherlock? “ Levi replied. “Well, she better be here by 8, or you both die… and considering it’s 7:59, I think she’s dead… and so are you,” he added.
I couldn’t take it anymore. “Better check with your sidekick one more time, Levi,” I replied, emerging from the shadows. Jack tried to grab me and pull me back, but instead, I grabbed the gun from his hands and pointed it at Levi.
