Drop-Dead Gorgeous CH 16
|
“Kat? Kat! Are you okay?” I heard Jack’s voice off in the distance. I was on the beach with Sam somewhere in the Caribbean. I held his hand tightly as we walked on the shore line. What is Jack doing here? He’s not supposed to be with us on our honey moon… I ignored the thought and turned back to Sam. He was drop-dead gorgeous… He looked so beautiful. His hair was perfect; his eyes were burning into my soul. He smiled at me and whispered, “I love you,” into my ear. He lifted my wisps of hair from my face as the sea breeze felt good on my skin. I heard the seagulls hovering above. It was the most perfect moment. I leaned in to touch those subtle lips of his. “Are you okay?” Sam asked. Am I okay? Why wouldn’t I be okay? This is the most perfect moment of my life! Why is he spoiling it? Everything is wonderful! “What are you talking about, Sam?” I asked, struggling to kiss him.
“Sam? Why are you calling me Sam?” he asked. I jerked back in confusion. Why was he asking such a question? “Because you’re Sam, and I’m Kat…” I replied, trying to figure out what was going on. “Kat, wake up. Are you okay?” Sam asked again. Wake up? But I am awake! Why is he acting like this? Suddenly, I felt someone pulling me. I closed my eyes, trying to make this headache go away. When I opened them, I realized I wasn’t on the beach anymore with Sam. I was in that pick-up, and it was upside down. I was upside down… I could feel blood pouring down my face. I guess that’s why I have a headache… That was when I realized Jack was on the other side of me in the driver’s seat. “Are you okay, Kat?” he asked for the fourth time. I struggled to clear my mind.
“Um, yeah… I think so. My head just really hurts,” I replied. As I struggled with my seatbelt, a sharp pain shot up my arm. “And my arm…” I added. Jack somehow managed to rip his seatbelt off and flew to the floor of the pick-up—or should I say the roof? He tried to open his door, but seeing there was no use, he broke the window. He crawled out and came over to my side, breaking that window. “Can you get your seatbelt off?” he asked. I tried to pull it off, but it wouldn’t budge. “No,” I replied, feeling all the pain rush into me. I began to panic as Jack crawled into the car and looked over my seatbelt. “Don’t worry; I’ll get you out of here in no time,” he replied, trying to calm me down. “You just need to breathe, okay?” he stated. I nodded and began to practice my breathing. Jack pulled out a Swiss Army knife and began cutting away at my seatbelt.
I tried to concentrate on something else. “I smell something,” I replied. Jack continued to hack away at my seatbelt. “What?” he asked. I continued to search for the distinct smell. I froze in horror as I realized what it was. “Jack, I smell oil,” I replied. Jack stopped cutting my seatbelt. “Like car oil?” he asked. What a dumb question! Of course car oil! What other kind of oil would it be? Cooking oil? Olive oil? I gave Jack a look that answered his question. “I don’t think anything should happen, but just in case…” Jack said as he began to hack at my seatbelt a little faster. I tried not to panic. “It’s okay, Kat… We’re not going to die today…” I reminded myself. Jack looked at me with some confusion. “I’m talking to myself, okay?” I said defensively. Jack shrugged his shoulders and continued at his work.
Suddenly I began to smell something else, other than oil. “Jack, do you smell smoke?” I asked. Jack began to hack at my seatbelt furiously. I guess he smelled it too… As I looked out the window, I noticed someone else’s shoes outside the truck. I saw some hands grab Jack and try to pull him out of the truck. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he yelled, pushing the stranger’s hands away from him. “She needs to die, sir,” I heard the voice reply. “I set the car on fire; it’s time to leave,” he added. My eyes widened. He did WHAT? “Did he just say he set the car on fire?” I asked frantically. Jack didn’t answer. All I saw was his hand push the man away as he continued to cut away at my seatbelt. “It’s that guy from the Camry,” he replied. I knew it… He must be working for Levi… Jack worked furiously at my seatbelt. How could it be so thick? I tried to help him rip it apart as the smell of smoke grew more intense. “I’m scared, Jack,” I whispered as tears began to fall down my face.
Jack looked up at me and I saw his eyes looked frightened. “Don’t worry; I’m not going to let you die,” he replied. I felt like I was in some war movie or something… It was time for the soldier to be left behind so that the general could live… And just as I was about to tell Jack to leave before he gets hurt, the seatbelt snapped. I flew to the ground and hit my head on the hard metal. Jack grabbed my arms and began pulling me out of the truck. “Come on, Kat! Help me out a little here!” he yelled. I struggled to crawl out of the broken window and out onto the grass. I managed to push my way out with my good arm as Jack pulled me to my feet. I turned back to the burning car. “We have to run, Kat!” Jack yelled. But I was in so much pain. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to run any faster than a slug. “I can’t,” I replied. Jack shook his head.
“Yes, you can!” he yelled. He put his arm underneath my arms to give me some support. “Now, run!” he stated with intensity. We struggled forward towards the road and ran as fast as Jack could carry my dead weight. We got about 10 feet when the car exploded. The explosion was so massive that it threw us forward onto the pavement. Jack threw himself on top of me as pieces of debris flew into the air. I could not believe what had just happened. I squeezed my eyes shut tight, hoping it was all some horrible nightmare. I felt Jack get off of me. “Kat? It’s over,” he said quietly. I refused to open my eyes. “You can open your eyes now, Kat,” he added. I shook my head. “I don’t want to,” I replied. Jack grabbed my good arm and pulled me up. “Cut it out, Kat. We need to find some help,” he said. I reluctantly opened my eyes and saw all the cuts along Jack’s face.
“Are you okay?” I asked, reaching up to touch his bleeding face. He swatted my hand away. “I’m fine; we just need to find a first aid kit,” he replied. Macho man… “But I think my arm is broken!” I yelled. Jack began to examine my arm closely. “It is…” he stated simply. He took his shirt off and ripped it into intricate pieces, making me a sling. Then he put his jacket on over his bare chest, which by the way was not bad, and zipped it up. “You’ll be fine as long as you keep it in the sling,” he replied. I looked up into the sky and noticed that the sun was beginning to set. “Jack, we have to get out of here!” I yelled in panic. Jack nodded and looked around and across the street at the parking lot of a motel. “I think we can get another car…” he said to himself. He began to walk across the road into the parking lot. “How are you going to do that?” I asked, following after him.

Ooah! Awesomez! As long as they can save Sam and Sarah and get away, without one of Levi's goons chasing them, that all that matters! Great work! Keep me posted! :) |
