My stomach began to torture me as it hit 4:30.  I hadn’t eaten anything besides those damn chips and a bottle of water, but I didn’t want to stop and get some food.  That would be wasting time…  Jack could tell that I was a bit bothered, so he began to pry.  “Are you okay?” he asked, turning down the radio that was on full blast since we had quieted down over my brother.  I nodded, trying to hide my hunger.  “Liar,” he stated.  Dammit!  Why is everyone so good at telling when I’m lying?  “Okay, so I’m a little hungry; that’s all,” I finally admitted.  Jack looked at his map.  “We can stop at a diner; it’s about 2 miles away,” he said.  I shook my head.  “No, no way.  We have to get to Sarah and Sam.  This will only take up precious time,” I replied stubbornly.  Jack rolled his eyes.  “We have time, Kat,” he reasoned.  Any more time that my mother and Sam spend with Levi is too much time… 

“No, we don’t have time, Jack!  I don’t want to come home to two dead bodies on my living room couch!” I yelled in fury.  Jack was shocked at my outburst.  I tried to compose myself and apologize.  “I can’t leave them alone with that lunatic for much longer.  He could be torturing them right now…  I just can’t get this picture out of my head of my mother and the love of my life lying in a pool of blood with Levi hovering over them with that evil grin on his face…” I stated as calmly as I could.  I tried to get the image out of my mind.  Jack was silent for a moment, taking it all in.  “What exactly did you do to make this Levi guy so pissed off?” he asked, obviously trying to understand why Levi was Levi.  I shrugged my shoulders.  Honestly, I really didn’t know why he wanted to kill me for changing the future.  Granted, I knew a little more about the situation than Jack, but I just couldn’t explain it.  I didn’t know how to.  It was all just so complicated.  Plus, I didn’t really think Jack would trust my stability if I tried to explain all of this to him.  He would probably just turn around and send me to the funny farm…

“Okay, you win.  We’ll keep driving to Ruckshire,” he gave in.  I let out a sigh of relief.   Jack rolled his eyes.  “Volley was right…” he muttered.  I turned to him, curious about what he meant.  “Right about what?” I asked.  He shrugged his shoulders.  “You are annoying…” he answered.  I let out a little laugh.  “I told you, I’m a pain, Jack,” I admitted.  That was one thing I knew very well.  We kept driving, and I started to recognize landmarks.  I knew we were getting close to Ruckshire.  My heart began to pound, and my stomach was killing me.  I noticed Jack fiddling in his pockets while he drove.  He pulled out some mints and handed them to me.  “Does my breath stink?” I asked, putting my hand to my mouth, breathing heavily, and smelling it.  Jack laughed.  “No; well, maybe; I don’t know… But this is at least something to hold you over until we get there,” he replied.

I smiled.  How thoughtful of him…  He is pretty resourceful…  He must have learned a lot in the army.  I savored each piece of mint candy.  Sam’s face kept popping into my mind.  I yearned for him to hold me again…  I missed the way he smelled… Oh, he smelled SO good…  I missed feeling safe with his arms wrapped around me.  It was a terrible feeling not to have him beside me.  It was terrible to know that Levi had captured him, and was doing who knows what to him…  I shuttered at the thought of him being tortured by Levi.  Levi would most certainly try to punish Sam for what he was trying to do…  I still couldn’t believe he was from the future, and he was here to save me from death in the distant future…  A shiver went up my spine as I remembered the gory details of how I was supposed to die…  As I thought about these things, I noticed a car coming up behind us, sticking to Jack’s bumper.  “Idiot… What does this guy want?  I’m driving over the speed limit,” Jack mumbled to himself as he tried to maneuver out of the car’s way.

As I looked at the mirror, I noticed what type of car it was.  It was a red Toyota Camry.  I wondered why such a little car was making such a fuss over a big pick-up truck like Jack’s…  “What is he doing?” I asked.  The car continued to inch closer and closer.  Jack became frustrated and tapped on his breaks.   Finally, the car went around us, but it pulled up to my side and the person in the car stared at me.  I looked back into a cold, angry, frightening face.  It was a man, maybe in his late forties, with a scruffy beard and bug eyes.  He was staring at me with this terrifying look on his face.  As he looked at me, I couldn’t explain it, but it felt like he recognized me.  Suddenly, his car slowed down, and he pulled up behind us again.  I turned around and looked at the man.  “What’s going on, Kat? Do you know that guy?” Jack asked, trying to find some other way to get rid of this lunatic.  “No,” I said in confusion.  Who is this guy?  Maybe he works for Levi!  Anything is possible…  He seems to know me…  Suddenly, “bug eyes “revved up and slammed into the back of Jack’s pick-up.

I jerked forward; stupid me, I wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.  “Put your seatbelt on, Kat!” Jack yelled at me.  Now, I’m not THAT stupid.  I did as I was told, struggling for the restraint.  I quickly clicked it on as “bug eyes” hit the car again.  “He’s trying to kill us!” I yelled in a panic.  Jack shook his head.  “Well, he won’t make it…” he muttered.  He tried to swerve from side to side, hoping that the lunatic would speed up when we were in another lane, and fly into the ditch.  No such luck…  Suddenly, “bug eyes” hit the gas pedal and battered the corner of the pick-up with full force.  That sent the car into a spiral like a football.  I felt like everything was going in slow motion.  I looked around me as the car began spinning and sliding onto the side of the road.  We were on a high hill, and I just prayed that the car wouldn’t begin sliding down the hill.  It felt like it took forever.  The car just continued to flip; to my dismay, it went over the ledge, and down the hill.  I began to scream at the top of my lungs.
