CHAPTER 6

Why did I run away?  Of course, Sam was freaking me out with his controlling ways, but anything was better than being lost in the woods.  How stupid can I be?  I had no idea where I was going.  I must have been going in circles for hours because my stomach was beginning to growl.  I was without a watch, so I had no idea what time it really was.  I looked up into the sky to see the sun was not overhead.  Okay, that must mean it’s past noon…  No wonder I was hungry…  I hadn’t eaten since lunch the day before.  I looked around me.  Maybe I didn’t go that way…  Or was it that way?  Oh, who am I kidding?  I’m lost…  I didn’t know what else to do, so I found the nearest tree stump and sat down on it.  My stomach continued to growl, mocking me because there was no food in sight.

Minutes passed as I just sat there, thinking about the last few days.  So much had happened; I almost couldn’t believe it myself.  Suddenly I heard a noise.  It sounded like the crunching of leaves under someone’s shoe.  I stood to my feet with fear.  “Sam?” I asked loudly, hoping for a response.  No one answered.  What is going on?  I was going to die.  Some animal was going to attack me in just a few moments, and they were going to eat me for lunch, or dinner…  Lucky, they’ll get to eat…  “Excuse me?”  I turned to see a man a few feet off coming from the trees.  He was wearing a business suit and there was some mud on the bottom of his pants.  What is a guy in a suit doing way out in the woods?  “Hello.  I seem to be lost, sir,” I replied, still feeling a little paranoid.  The man walked up closer, and he had a smile on his face.  When I got a better look at him, his face had a distinguished look.

He had a strong jaw and green eyes.  His skin was very rough; he seemed older than Sam, and he had a scar along the side of his face going from the top of his eyebrow to near the bottom of his chin.  “Where did you get that scar?” I asked.  I wasn’t quite sure why I had asked such a rude question, but for some reason, it just slipped out…  The man smiled, showing off a few crooked teeth; a crooked smile, but he still looked devilishly handsome.  “What a question…” he said in a seductive voice.  What was going on?  Why was he acting so odd?  “The scar is from a battle,” he replied.  A battle?  He sounded like he was from the movie Braveheart…  “Wow, a battle… Did you win?” I asked, moving a little back, creating some more space between us.  The man laughed; the laugh scared me.  I don’t know why, but it sounded so unnatural.

“I always win, sweetheart,” he replied, coming inches away from my face, grabbing my arms so I couldn’t get free.  I was growing terrified.  What was going on?  I was so confused and lost.  “What are you doing?” I asked.  The man laughed that terrible laugh again.  “This is just how it has to be, sweetheart,” he stated.  I was petrified now.  What was he going to do to me?  Why had I run away from Sam?  At least I knew he wouldn’t try and hurt me physically… I think.  Mr. Psycho…  He’s Mr. Psycho.  “What are you going to do to me?” I asked in fear.  Mr. Psycho shrugged his shoulders.  “I wouldn’t have to do anything if that Sam wasn’t getting in the way of the past…” he replied cryptically.  What?  How did he know Sam?  “Now I have to finish the job myself…” he continued.  Was Sam trying to kill me, but he couldn’t do it?  Did Mr. Psycho hire him to do the job and he couldn’t finish?

Maybe that’s why Sam knew where I lived, and that’s why he knew when I would die… He was supposed to kill me, but he just couldn’t do it because I reminded him of his girlfriend.  It was all beginning to make since…  “Please, please don’t kill me,” I begged.  Mr. Psycho laughed in my face.  “That’s just the way it has to be, Kat.  I have to do this; it’s the rules.  I just seem to get a little too much pleasure out of my job…” he replied.  He let go of one of my hands and reached into his pocket.  He pulled out what looked like a pocket-knife.  He’s going to stab me!  What do I do?  Why did I listen to Sam?  I would never be in this mess if it weren’t for that backstabbing…  I let my thought trail off.  There was no sense in dwelling over the past if I was about to die.  “Say a little prayer,” said Mr. Psycho as he lifted his hand up in the air with the knife, ready to stab me.  I closed my eyes as tears began to stream down my cheeks.  So THIS is how I’m going to die… Not by hit-and-run, but by stab-and-run…

The next thing I knew, Mr. Psycho’s hand was no longer gripping my arm.  I opened my eyes to see Sam on top of Mr. Psycho, wrestling to get the knife out of his hand.  “Levi, no!” he yelled as he struggled.  I was in such shock.  Sam had saved me again, and now he was in danger of getting himself stabbed.  I didn’t know what to do; I was pretty sure I would have been no help to Sam, and considering he had such large muscles, I figured he could take the guy anyway.  Somehow he managed to get the knife out of Mr. Psycho’s hand and throw it far off, deeper into the woods.  Then he punched him, and Mr. Psycho was out like a light.  Sam turned back to me.  “Are you okay?” he asked as he ran up to me, checking my arms and everywhere else to see if I was hurt.  “I’m fine,” I replied in shock.  I just stared at Mr. Psycho, the man who had just tried to kill me.  He was unconscious.  I turned back to Sam, who was missing his leather jacket, and had a big gash on his left arm.  He did get cut…  He’s hurt!  “Come on, we have to go,” he replied, grabbing my arm and running deeper into the woods.

I was tired and skeptical.  Did I really want to go anywhere with Sam?  From what I had just found out, he was supposed to be the one who killed me.  But considering he just saved my life, twice, I decided it was better to be with him, than wait for Mr. Psycho to wake up and try again.  We were running for what seemed like 10 minutes, when Sam finally stopped.  We were near the road again.  “Okay, you can have a little rest right now,” he replied, catching his breath.  I nodded as I began to pant.  “Why did you run away, Kat?  That was so stupid!  Do you see what you got yourself into?”  Sam sounded hurt; like I had hurt his feelings or something.  “Why was he trying to kill me?  He said you worked with him,” I replied through long breathing fits.  “What? I don’t work with Levi,” Sam replied, searching the woods to see if Levi might have been on our trail somehow.

“Well, he said you were getting in the way…of the past?”  I was growing more confused as the words came out.  I really needed to get some answers, but right now just didn’t seem the best time.  Sam finally regained some strength.  Before he said a word, I spoke.  “I’m sorry,” I said quietly.  Sam turned and looked deep into my eyes.  It was as if he were seeing into my soul.  He let out a deep sigh and replied, “It’s okay.”  I shook my head.  “No, I thought you were kidnapping me.  It scared me, a lot.  I didn’t know what else to do except for run.  I got sucked into that trap…  How did you find me?” I asked out of curiosity.  Sam shrugged his shoulders.  “I think it was fate.  I just figured you went into the woods, and I started from there.  I think I was meant to find you.  I’m here to make sure you don’t die.”  Boy, this guy had a way with words…

“I… I never got a chance to thank you.  You saved my life twice now.  Thank you,” I said quietly.  I could see a smile creep into Sam’s lips.  He turned away from me and towards the road.  “You’re welcome,” he replied in the same volume.  He turned his head back towards me and motioned towards the road.  “Let’s go; we have a long journey ahead of us…” he stated.  He began to walk out onto the road, towards his beloved old car.  I followed him, now certain that this was the path I had to follow if I wanted to stay alive.  Sam had saved me twice; he must be the future…  Kat 2, Mr. Gorgeous, 1.
