Standing under a red umbrella, Candace stared at Jake. The boy next door that she was in love with. It had been hard the past three years. Seeing him with girl after girl, never once acting the least bit interested in her. When he had told her to meet him here, she had no idea what he could have wanted, but she didn’t even hesitate. She just grabbed the umbrella she had had since she was four-years-old and walked out the door.

“I love you, Candace. I have always loved you.” Jake wiped a tear from her eye. It was pouring down rain, but he didn’t care. He had to tell her before she left to go to college. Candace moved her hand toward her face to pull the hair out of her face, but Jake beat her to it.

“It’s too late, Jake. I have moved on.” Candace lied as she quickly pushed his hand away from her face. She had waited three years to hear those words, but she couldn’t let him hurt her again. She backed away from him and turned to leave.

“Candace, I know you don’t believe that. I know you love me. And I know that you can’t just walk away.” He really thought that he could still have her after everything he put her through.

“I guess you don’t really know me at all.” Candace said coldly as she walked away into the rain.

Jake stood there, not even bothering to put his hood on while he watched the only girl he ever loved walk away forever. How could this have happened? Weren’t they meant to be? He felt so stupid for waiting to tell her.

Candace had just done the hardest thing in the world. She had walked away from the only man she had ever loved. Why did he have to wait so long? Why did he have to date all of those other girls before he realized that she was the one he loved? She had been there the whole time. Waiting patiently for the day that he would wake up and realize that they would be perfect together. Tomorrow she would be on a plane to New York. She would probably never see Jake again, but somehow she was okay with that. Knowing that he could never hurt her again made it all right. But she also knew that forgetting him could hurt more.

Jake didn’t know how long he had been standing in the rain. Although he hated to admit it, part of him was actually naïve enough to think that she would come back to him. If it wouldn’t have been for his phone ringing, who knows how long he would have been out there.

“Hello?” Jake answered in a sullen voice.

“Hey, Jake! What’s wrong?” It was Wendy. His girlfriend of two years. The girl that had wrecked everything that he could have had with Candace. He felt a lot of resentment towards her.

“Nothing.” He lied. Why should he tell her that Candace had just walked out of his life forever and that she was the cause of it? That would only make her mad. And the last thing he needed was another girl that was pissed at him. Why was Candace being so stupid anyway? She should have just kissed him when he told her he loved her. It’s not like he did anything to her.

“Can I come over tonight? We need to talk.” She didn’t even act like she cared about his problems. Not like she ever did. That’s why he broke up with her two months ago. That and the fact that he realized he loved Candace. He couldn’t be with Wendy when he loved Candace so much. It made things extra difficult when Wendy and Candace became the best of friends. He had to see Candace everywhere he went.

“Sure. Why not? Not like I have anything better to do.” Jake answered sarcastically.

“Okay. I’ll be over at eight.” She didn’t catch the sarcasm. Maybe she wouldn’t show up anyway. That would be good.

He hung up the phone. Why didn’t he just say no?  He was really bad at saying no. To everything. It was surprising he hadn’t got in more trouble. He always laughed when he saw one of those “Just Say NO” posters because he thought that they had made those posters just for him.

Candace was sitting in her bedroom. It would be the last time she spent here as a child. Tomorrow she would be an adult. On her way to success. Although she was excited, she couldn’t stop thinking about Jake. He was always going to be part of her. Maybe I should go see him. Just to talk. She thought. Candace got in her car and headed up the hill towards Jake’s house.

Jake got to his house at ten till eight. He had to clean his apartment before Wendy came. Sure he didn’t like her, but he at least wanted her to be able to walk. He didn’t even get all of his dirty clothes in the hamper when there was a knock at the door.

“Come in!” he yelled. Wendy entered the room, her brown hair dripping everywhere.

She stepped over piles of clothes and magazines to get to the couch. “Nice place.” She said as she picked up what looked like a sock and made a face. She managed to clear a spot on the couch.

“Thanks. You said we needed to talk?” he asked while he made his way to the chair beside her.

“Yeah. I think we ended things between us on bad terms.” She said. Wendy looked into his big, brown eyes.

“Nope. I’m good.” He said hastily. Now she was just frustrating him.

“Well, I’m not. I felt like we didn’t have a clean break.” She leaned in for a kiss. Jake didn’t stop her. The next thing he knew, all of his clothes were off and they were lying on the couch.

“We good now?” Jake asked, proud of himself.

At that very moment, Candace walked in the door.

“Jake, I just wanted to say that I love…” she stopped immediately when she saw the man she was about to give her complete heart to on the couch, naked with some slut.

“Candace, don’t be mad.” He said as he scrambled to find his clothes.

“I’m not mad.” Candace said and she ran out of the apartment.

Not bothering to put his shirt on, Jake ran after her wearing only his pants and socks.

“Candace, you don’t understand! I was really upset. I thought you had walked out of my life forever.” He tried to explain, but Candace just didn’t care. He had hurt her for the last time.

“Now I am.” She said and walked down the stairs and out into the rain. She knew she was wrong in coming to this place. In giving him a second chance.

Sitting in her dorm, two months later, Candace was finalizing her term paper. She was getting good grades in all of her classes. She loved college. She liked it way better than high school because there was no Jake or Wendy to wreck her life. In fact she hadn’t thought about either of them since she saw them at Jake’s apartment. Candace was so completely consumed in writing her paper, that when her phone rang, she jumped.

“Candace, are you still coming home for Thanksgiving?” It was her mother. Even though she considered herself as independent now, she still wanted to see her parents. It had been too long.

“Yeah. I can’t wait.” Candace answered happily.

“Well good. Oh and I thought you should know that Wendy is pregnant. You guys are still friends aren’t you? I know you’re not as close as you were, but I just thought you might want to go see her when you come home.” Her mother suggested, completely oblivious to everything that happened on that rainy night.

“Maybe. Well I have to go.” Candace said quickly. She just wanted to finish her paper.

                “Okay. I love you.”

                “Love you too.”

Candace hung up the phone, shocked. How could Wendy be pregnant? It was obviously Jake’s baby. Had she told him yet? One thing was for sure. She had to go see her when she got home. No matter how much she had hurt her, Candace wasn’t going to just ditch Wendy.

She left her paper unfinished and turned it in the way it was. That would have to do. Her best friend was in need, and there was nothing that was going to stop her from helping.

Once back at her childhood home, Candace visited with her parents for a while, then headed to Wendy’s house. She walked up the long driveway. Wendy was sitting on the porch swing.

                “Wendy.” Candace said softly.

“I guess you heard.” She said as she pointed to her stomach.

“Yeah.” Candace sat down on the swing beside her best friend. “Do you wanna talk about it?”

Wendy shook her head no. There was really nothing to talk about. She had Jake’s baby inside her. Wendy began to cry. Candace just comforted her friend. At that moment Candace was glad hadn’t gone out with Jake. That could have been, would have been her crying.
