The warm, sunny, morning air drifted through the open window of one of many second story bedrooms, were Caroline lay peacefully dreaming. She was dreaming of playing checkers with her dad.She was trying to play, anyway. Dad was teasing her too much to concentrate on the game. His dancing eyes told Caroline he was ready to scoop her up into one of his big bear hugs.“Bring - Bring!” exclaimed the alarm clock as it woke Caroline.“Great another day without my dad!I never like being awaken by a little wind up alarm clock!” Caroline sighed as she thought of her dad and how his voice would boom through the hall up to her room.He would say, “Oh Carolina, wake up!” Caroline missed the way her father would twirl her short, brown, curly hair with his fingers. She thought of the day her father left Fort Campbell, Kentucky, along with all of her friends’ fathers. It had been two long years ago, in 1943 when the United States had joined the rest of the world in World War II.Caroline and her friends didn’t understand all of the terrible things happening in the world, they just knew that their fathers were going away. Caroline sighed again. Her dad had been gone much longer than she ever thought it would be.Caroline looked up at her clock and couldn’t believe her eyes; “Oh perfect, I’m late for breakfast!” Caroline rushed into her dress, knee socks and shoes, and brushed her teeth and hair, then quickly raced down the stairs.Caroline was a 12-year-old girl, who with her mother, was living with her aunt and grandfather until the war was over and her dad came back home.Caroline always enjoyed staying with her grandpa but she missed her dad more than ever! You see her father was a doctor working with the 101st Airborne Division stationed some were in Germany, because of World War II.The stairs squeaked as she ran down them trying to get to the dinning room to catch some food.“You’re late!” scolded her Aunt Cindy Lou, as Caroline rushed in.“I’m really sorry Auntie Lou!Really I am!” Caroline answered.Caroline’s aunt hated to be called that, but Caroline and her dad had come up with the name before he had left, and Caroline was not going to give it up.Caroline’s dad said that Cindy Lou was too serious, so she needed a name to loosen her up a little bit, and Caroline agreed.Just because Auntie Lou ran the huge house for Caroline’s grandfather, she bossed everyone around. She had to have everything in order and perfect all the time.“Well! What did take you so long?” Lisa Mackintosh, Caroline’s mother asked smiling at her daughter.“Did your door get locked by your aunt?” teased Caroline’s grandpa. Dear old grandfather was so sweet and kind, he was teasing and joking with Caroline all of the time.Caroline felt that grandpa was trying to fill the empty place in her heart left there because her dad was gone.It helped some, but no one could take her father’s place, not even grandpa.“No grandpa!I was just thinking about dad.But that was a good one!” Caroline answered giggling.Caroline’s mother got that sad look on her face when anyone mentioned her dad, “Oh honey I know you miss your father but you just….”“…CAN’T THINK OF HIM All OF THE TIME!” her aunt shouted interrupting Caroline’s mother. Aunt Cindy didn’t like for anything to upset Lisa.“What I was about to say was you just start thinking of him after breakfast so you won’t be late again,” Mrs. Mackintosh sweetly stated. “You better not do that tomorrow young lady.Do you know why?” Her aunt asked furiously.“Yes tomorrow is school!” Caroline answered with a quiver.“You bet, Sugar Pie!You have to go to school if you want to be a doctor like your dad!” Caroline’s grandpa remarked, trying to lighten up the mood.“Go easy on her sis!” Lisa Mackintosh addressed her sister sweetly.Immediately Cindy softened. No one could calm Cindy Lou down like Caroline’s mom.Caroline’s mother was like that with everyone.Lisa was a volunteer who worked with the Lady’s Group. This group sent many useful items to the U.S. troops overseas.Caroline’s mother worked very late and sometimes didn’t get to eat dinner with the family. While Lisa was away a lot, her sister had taken it on herself to become Caroline’s second mother. She was much more strict than Lisa would be, and here lately, Caroline had to be rescued by her mother more than usual.Caroline ate her breakfast quietly, thinking of something else her aunt had mentioned. Caroline thought about going to school tomorrow. Her teacher had said she had a surprise announcement for the class for Monday. She wondered what it might be. Caroline loved school because she was the best and smartest student in the 6th grade class. She worked hard and studied a lot.She loved to read, but here lately, her favorite subject in school was geography. She wanted to know everything there was to know about the places in the world where all the fighting was going on, and she wanted to know exactly just where her father was.
