A Perfect Match 40

Romance Created on 4-17-08 Views(50) Story Rating G

Amy didn’t know what to say. She wasn’t sure if she should say anything. She was lost for words for a while. She just stared at it.

“You’re awfully quiet.” Anthony commented.

“I don’t know what to say.” Amy replied quietly.

“Well, usually people would say what they think of it. So let’s start with that. What do you think of it?”

Amy shrugged. “I don’t know. It’s…It’s just so…so…”

“Yes?” Anthony pressed.

“It’s so pretty.” Amy finally said.

Anthony smiled slightly. “That’s what I thought you would say.” He said softly.

Amy looked at him for a minute. “There’s something behind this. I can just feel it.” She said suspiciously.

Anthony shrugged innocently. “What are you talking about? I bought this for you as an apology. I couldn’t think of any other way. I mean, seriously think about it. If I just showed up at your house or went by your locker at school and said ‘sorry’ would you really just accept it, no questions asked?”

Amy looked down at the necklace. “Well, no, I guess not, but I never expected you to get me this.” She waved her hand in the general direction of the necklace.

“Well, when you’re trying to think of some way to get someone you really care about to forgive you, sometimes the things you think of are totally extreme. Here’s a perfect example right here. I couldn’t think of anything to get you but this necklace. I thought you’d like it, and I had nothing to lose, so…” He shrugged, assuming that Amy could finish his sentence on her own.

“There’s something up, isn’t there? There is absolutely no way that you would do this out of nowhere. Yeah, I know that you’re doing this as an apology and it’s not that I don’t like it, because I really do. But if I learned anything at all during the short period of time that we went out, then it’s that you wouldn’t go this far to apologize.”

“Yeah, I realize that, but are you seriously saying that I can’t change for the better? I’m only human, Amy. I make mistakes. Don’t tell me that you’ve never ever made a mistake in your life, because I won’t believe it.”

“I never said that I’m perfect. I’m not denying that I made mistakes. I’m agreeing with you. Of course I’ve made mistakes. That’s what makes me human and normal. But I know you enough to say that you are unchangeable.”

“That’s just nonsense! You can’t actually be telling me that just because I’ve been a bit…mean, so to speak, that I can’t change!!”

“Actually, that’s exactly what I’m saying!!” Amy hissed.

Just then they heard footsteps and silenced themselves. They both didn’t want to look like little children. To their surprise, Jane was in the doorway, not Amy’s mom. They both just stared at her, not believing what they were saying.

“JANE??!!” Anthony gasped in surprise.

Jane smiled in a somewhat stuck-up way. “Hello Anthony, Amy.” She greeted coolly. She leaned against a wall and gave both of them a quick examination.

“Amy, no offense or anything, but you’re mom’s way too gullible. Get this. I rang the doorbell and waited and your mom answered the door. So I put on a super sweet smile and said that I’m one of your friends; I just made up a random name and bam! She believed me! I don’t know about you, but I call that gullible with a capital ‘G.’” Jane smirked.

 “You lied to my mom???”

“That’s not the nicest way to put it, but yeah, I guess you could say that.”

“Fine. What are doing here? I never invited you, and I never will!!!”

“Oh, I was just here to look for Anthony.” She put on an innocent face and smiled.

“Well, you found him. So please take your package and get the hell out of my house!” Amy was close to yelling. But she didn’t want her mom to think that she was being a bad host. So she had to control her tone and attitude to the best of her ability, though it was becoming increasingly difficult.

“It would be my pleasure.” Jane said, and looked and Anthony. “Anthony, darling, you have her blessing. You can get out of this dump and have some real fun with me! I mean, seriously, you wouldn’t want to be caught dead hanging with that.” She jerked her head in Amy’s general direction.

“Oh, and why not?” Anthony demanded. He didn’t like Jane’s random appearances. They just got in the way of everything. Every time she showed up, he was close to getting Amy back. Then he would just make it seem like he hated Amy, which he didn’t. He did care for Amy, but it was Jane that kept getting in his way.

“Because no one in their right mind would hang with someone dressed like that.” She pointed to Amy’s outfit. Amy shifted in her seat and toyed with her sweatshirt idly. She looked down at her outfit and compared it to Jane’s. Jane did have a point. Her outfit of a sweatshirt and loose kapris was nothing compared to Jane’s chic outfit. She wore an almost-neon green shirt under a short fitting leather jacket, which she left gaping open. She wore ultra-tight pants and dark black flats with a bit of sparkle on them.  Jane sighed loudly. “Well, let’s get going. Don’t you enjoy my company at all?”

“Not really.” Amy muttered under her breath, but she didn’t say that out loud. She just nodded sweetly. If Jane could pretend to be a goody two shoes, so could Amy. “Of course we do. It’s a shame I can’t join you guys. I have to go to ballet class soon, and I just can’t miss that class to spend a day with friends!” she said aloud.

Jane and Anthony both stared at Amy in surprise. “Excuse me?” Jane said, not believing her ears. She was hoping to get Amy mad, but apparently that wasn’t happening.

“Hey, life isn’t fair. I want to go with you guys and hang out, but I have something else to do.” She sighed. “That’s life for you.” She looked at Jane and Anthony and weighed their reaction. Perfect. Just what she was hoping for. Jane was just standing there with her mouth hanging open. Anthony was just staring at her, wide-eyed. “You guys have fun.” She said with a shrug. Then she headed upstairs to her room. Well, the worst was over. She managed to kick both of her nightmares out of her house in one night. Now she just had to prepare for the worst tomorrow at school.

She lay in her bed and thought it over. She did like Anthony. He was a sweet, charming boy, but he made too many mistakes. Of course she could forgive him. After all, she was a very forgiving person. But she couldn’t compete with Jane. Jane was sexy. She was popular, and she could get whatever guy she wanted. Tomorrow, Amy would just have to join this competition.
