She went downstairs to meet Anthony and her mom. She smiled half-heartedly when she saw Anthony, just so her mom wouldn’t get mad at her for not ‘behaving appropriately’.
“Amy dear, why don’t you show Anthony to the living room? You could watch a DVD or something. If you want to, you can go down to the basement and watch a movie together. Does that sound ok to you, Anthony?” Amy’s mom suggested.
Amy groaned. Her mom could be SO overprotective sometimes. It got annoying and more often than not she found herself wishing she could strangle her. Anthony smiled angelically, replying, “Of course. I don’t want to be too much of a bother. I just wanted to spend some time with Amy, that’s all.” He snuck a quick glance at Amy. She groaned again and rested her head on the stairway post.
“Amy, where are you going to be?” her mom pressed.
“I don’t know…we’ll be in the living room, I guess.” Amy didn’t sound the least bit enthusiastic.
Anthony nodded casually and started walking towards the living room. He knew Amy’s house almost as well as he knew his own.
“Have fun, kids.” Amy’s mom called before they left.
Yeah, I wish! With Anthony here, fun is just out of the question. Amy thought to herself, but aloud she said, “Yeah, mom. We will.” That should satisfy her for a while. Now all she needed to do was find a way to get Anthony out of her house and still look completely innocent about it.
“What do you want to watch?” Amy asked, though she really didn’t care.
“I don’t know…what do you have? Oh! Unaccompanied Minors! I love that one! We’ll watch that one!” Anthony held the DVD in his hand.
“Sure, sure.” Amy remarked casually.
She put the DVD into the DVD player and hit play. Then she left the room.
“Hey, where are you going?” Anthony asked from behind her.
“Uh…I’ve got to get my homework done. I don’t want to have a missing assignment.” Amy said.
“Cool, then I’ll help you with it. Like the quote says, ‘two heads are better than one.’ So what homework do you have?”
“Never mind. I don’t have homework anymore. Just watch the stupid movie.” Amy grumbled.
“Fine with me. I just don’t get why you’re giving me all this attitude. It was nothing, ok? It was just a…friendly exchange. Yeah, I’ll put it that way.”
“Alright, so you’re saying if you saw me making out with some other guy that wasn’t you, it could be considered a friendly exchange?”
“No, I’m not. I most definitely am not!”
“Exactly. So why should I consider it a ‘friendly exchange’ when you wouldn’t?”
“Because you’re not the type of person who would do that.”
“Oh yeah? Says who?”
“I know you well enough to say things about your personality. I probably know your personality just as well as you do.”
“You know NOTHING about me. All you know is my name, where I live, and that I was your girlfriend, emphasis on ‘was.’”
Anthony clenched his fists. “Well it’s not my fault that you’re just a cold-hearted freak!!”
“I’d much rather be a cold-hearted freak than a no good, lying, thieving CHEATER!!!” Amy snapped back.
“I didn’t cheat on you!!! I still loved you, no matter what the hell you saw me doing with anyone else!!!”
“Yeah, I’m just going to consider you and Jane hooking up in the mall ‘you loved me’. Fat chance, bitch.”
“If you weren’t a girl, I’d have given you two black eyes- one for your bitchy personality, and one for being so insensitive!!!”
“You’re saying I’m insensitive. You’re the one that’s messing ‘us’ up!!! You’re the one that permanently screwed everything up!!”
“Me??? I was the one who actually made the attempt to fix things. Yeah, I admit I made a lot of mistakes. I know that. But I actually made a move to fix my mistake. Unlike you, I learn from my mistakes!!!”
“You learn nothing more than what they teach you in school!!”
“You see what I mean about you being insensitive??? You don’t get it!! There are so many people out there who would understand SO much better than you are right now. You are such a jerk!!”
“Fine, then. If I’m one of those totally insensitive and misunderstanding bitches, then give me one valid reason that doesn’t go against what you just said to me and proves that you actually still have feelings for me!!”
This got Anthony. He remained quiet for a long time. He didn’t know how to counter that one. The anger still boiled in him. It hadn’t subsided yet, though he wished it would. This was no way to make up to Amy. This was the worst possible thing that could happen. One minute, he was planning to just play it cool and apologize to Amy, and now, he just messed things up even further.
Amy smirked. “Yeah, that’s what I thought.” She turned around to walk away. She’d won, as usual. Anthony wasn’t going to be that intimidating anymore. This was her house, her rules. There was no way around it. If he didn’t like it, he’d just have to deal with it. She expected herself to feel bad about it, and maybe even turn around to give a quick apology, but instead, she felt good. It felt good to finally give Anthony a piece of her mind. She’d never have imagined it would, but she was almost positive that this was the best she’d felt in days. Anthony’s voice surprised her. She hadn’t expected him to say anything else.
“At least watch Unaccompanied Minors with me.” His voice was soft.
“No, thanks. I’m done with you.”
“Fine, then I’ll tell your mom that you were misbehaving. You’ll be in trouble the minute I step off your property.” His voice was still soft and calm, but now it sounded a bit smug.
Amy found herself at a loss. Just a moment ago she’d felt so sure of herself, and now, a minute later, he’d turn the tables on her. “Fine. Don’t try anything funny, or you will regret it.” She put a warning edge in her voice.
Anthony just nodded and hit the play button again; he’d paused it before. An hour into the movie, and he decided he would carry out his plan. “I got you something from the mall, if it means anything to you now.”
“It won’t.”
“I’m still going to insist on giving it to you.”
“Don’t try anything stupid.”
“I’m not going to. Close your eyes.”
“I don’t trust you enough to do that.”
“Fine then. Hold out your hand so I can put something in it.”
“I’m still not going to do that.”
“Trust me. I’m not going to mess this up by doing something totally uncalled for. I swear on my life.”
Hesitantly Amy held out her hand. Anthony smiled and put a small red, velvety box in it. “My gift to you. No matter what you think of me, I’ll always love you.” He said quietly.Comments
