Anthony just sat there for a while, planning out his words. Then his phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and checked the number. It was Amy’s mom.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Anthony. Don’t worry about Amy anymore. Thanks for helping. She’s home now.”
“Really?” Anthony was happy beyond belief. “Where was she? Is she okay?” the questions just burst out of him.
“She said that she was walking in the park and got tired, so she decided to come back home.”
“But…but that’s impossible.”
“Are you calling my Amy a liar??”
“No, I’m not. I’m saying that it’s impossible because I’ve been looking all over the park for hours now.”
“I thought you were at the mall.”
“I went there, but she wasn’t there, so I started looking through the park. Where in the park was she?”
“Um…hold on. Let me ask her.”
“No, let me talk to her, please.”
“No problem. Hang on.”
There was some noise on the other end and he heard Amy’s name being called. He prayed for the best and hoped Amy wouldn’t refuse to talk to him. To his relief, Amy’s voice came to him a few minutes later. “What?” Amy asked flatly.
“You weren’t in the park. Why did you lie and say that you were in the park?”
“I WAS in the park. I just happened to be in the wilder part of the park.”
“What?? Do you realize how dangerous that is?? You could have gotten poison ivy and there have been stories lately about bears. You could have been KILLED, Amy!!”
“Ok, so? I’m still alive, aren’t I?”
“That’s not my point. You’re alive now because of luck. You’re lucky that the bears didn’t appear when you were there. You’re just lucky that you didn’t accidentally brush your arm against poison ivy. You’re just lucky that you’re out of there and ALIVE!!!” He did everything he could to keep himself from screaming.
“Why would you care?? I thought the only person you cared about was that Jane girl. You know the one I’m talking about. The one you were making out with at the mall, remember? Of course you remember, how could you not? That’s not something anyone’s likely to forget.”
“Look, I’m sorry for that. I don’t know what I was thinking then. I love you, and only you. You just have to believe me.”
“No, I don’t have to believe you. I have the choice to believe you, and I don’t believe you.”
“Amy…”
“Please, don’t be so innocent, because you are the farthest thing from innocent I’ve known!!”
“You had me worried sick, Amy. You had your mom worried sick. You worried everyone.”
“Yeah, but I gave my mom a call and she sounded relieved enough.”
“Then why didn’t you call me?”
“I had no reason to. My mom’s my mom. She was the one who gave birth to me. She’s family.”
“That doesn’t matter. Did you honestly think that I would just sit back and relax while I know that you’re lost????”
“I didn’t know that you knew, and for your information, I wasn’t lost.”
“Whatever. Julie left you a message on your phone. She told me to tell you that. I guess I’ll see you in school.” Anthony said dully. He knew there was no way that he would get Amy to listen to him. There was no way that Amy would be his girl anymore. He would just have to let go of her and move on.
“Wow, you actually listened to directions.” Amy replied acidly.
“See you in school.” Anthony repeated flatly, and hung up. He traced over the pattern of the necklace again and sighed. He meant to give this to Amy as his apology. He might as well return it now. It was useless to him. Amy wasn’t his girl anymore. He should be able to just move on now. Then he had an even better idea. Maybe he wouldn’t be forced to return it after all. He just had to do something with the necklace, and he knew exactly what. He pulled his phone back out to make one important phone call.
