Anthony looked everywhere for Amy. He couldn’t find her, so he went to the food court, where he knew Julie would be waiting. When he found Julie he hesitated before asking her. “Hey, Julie. Do you know where Amy is?”

“No, I don’t. she left just a few minutes ago. She said she wanted to be alone. She also said that it was all your fault.”

“It was not!! I just happened to be enjoying life’s…luxuries.”

“Oh really? And exactly what luxuries were you enjoying?”

“That’s not for you to know. Anyway, back to my question. Where is Amy?!”

“Like I said before, I don’t know. She just told me that she was going to go ‘out for a while’ and that she wanted to be alone.”

“Yeah, that’s what you would say. You’re probably just protecting Amy’s hiding place.”

“And Amy would be very lucky to have such a friend like me if I were protecting her hiding spot!”

“Fine, if you’re not going to tell me, then I’m just going to look for her myself.”

“Yeah, good luck with that, you moron.”

Anthony ignored the last comment and headed to the exit. He had a vague idea as to where Amy was. He found his truck and hurried to start the engine. He drove as fast as he could without going over the speed limit to the park just down the street from Amy’s house. He parked the car quickly and searched the park. He looked behind a few trees, asked a few people, but still there was no sign of Amy. “Amy?” He called a bit nervously. No one answered. “Amy!” He called louder, but still there was no answer. Anthony was getting worried and nervous by this point and he went to Amy’s house to check to see if she’d gone home.

He arrived at her house and hesitantly rang the bell. Her mom answered the door. “Oh, hello Anthony. What a surprise to see you here. I thought you were out with Amy.”

“I was, but she left and I can’t find her now. Did she come home?”

“No, no she didn’t. I have one question: how in the world did you lose her?”

Anthony shuddered. He knew that she meant to ask how he managed to lose sight of her, but in his case, it meant something much more serious. “I don’t know. We agreed on meeting at the food court at the mall, and I waited an hour, but she didn’t come, so I figured she’d forgotten or something and thought she came home.”

“So you just left her at the mall, where anything can happen to her?! Anthony, I trusted you to make sure Amy doesn’t get hurt and that she comes home safe and sound!! Did you know that I need her to be home so that we can go somewhere. We have something very important to do, and we absolutely can’t be late!!”

“Yes, she told me that, and there’s no reason to panic. I’ll just head over to the mall now and see if Amy’s at the food court yet. I might have been a bit too jumpy.”

“She does have her cell phone with her, doesn’t she? Please tell me you didn’t ‘accidentally’ take her cell phone.”

“She should still have her phone with her, so I’ll try calling.”

“No, leave that to me. You go back to the mall and see if you can find my Amy.”

“Ok, I’ll come back in an hour or so and let you know. If I find her, I’ll come back sooner, and she’ll just stay home.”

“Agreed.”

Anthony got back into his truck and drove back to the mall. He was a nervous wreck now. He wanted to see Amy again. He wanted to know where she was. Suddenly his phone rang. Expecting it to be Amy, he whisked it out quickly, disappointed to find an unfamiliar number. He answered it. “Hello?”

“Anthony, this is Amy’s mom. Any luck finding her?”

“No, I’m still on my way to the mall. Did you get a hold of Amy yet?”

“I called her three times but I kept getting her voicemail. I left a message, but I want to be sure. Please help me find her.” She sounded desperate.

Anthony knew how she felt. He wanted to do whatever he could to soothe her. “Don’t worry. I’ll probably have her home safe and sound. She probably got lost or something. Don’t worry, ma’am. I’m pretty sure she’s fine.”

“I hope so.”  She still sounded doubtful.

“Please, don’t worry, or you’ll get me into a panic attack. I promise I’ll try my best to find your daughter. After all, she is my responsibility, right?”

“I suppose so. Best of luck.”

“Thanks, I’ll need it.” He hung up and began his search for Amy.
