He walked into the library and greeted the librarian cheerfully. the librarian just nodded in acknowledgement, but he kept his eye on him as he took a seat. he didn't really trust Anthony too much. Anthony looked around for Amy, but he couldn't find her anywhere.
"Uh, sir?"
"Yes?"
"Did anyone go upstairs?"
"No, why?"
"I was just wondering, that's all. uh, did you happen to see a girl with brown hair walk in? uh, holding school books?"
"Yeah, there were two girls who walked in earlier today"
"Really? um, which one was the more recent one? maybe like five minutes ago?"
"Hm...oh, are you looking for long-haired, average height, girl?"
"I guess, why?"
"Are you Anthony?"
Anthony's heart raced. what had Amy told this guy? "Yes." he said quickly and eagerly.
"Hm...she said wait for her at table 4."
"Wait, where'd she go?" he hid the disappointment in his voice.
"I don't know. something about getting some research supplies."
"Oh, thanks."
"No problem. don't make too much noise, ok?"
"I promise." he said, then turned around to leave. He saw Amy's coat and a few textbooks on the table already. so the old man wasn't lying after all. he sat down and put his own books on the table. he waited, wondering what could be taking Amy so long.
"Hey. i didn't think you could make it in such a short period of time." Amy said from behind him. Anthony turned around, surprised. he looked at her and held his breath. she looked absolutely beautiful. she had a white emperor waist shirt on, with little red flowers sprawled in a delicate design all over it. she matched it with dark blue jeans, and her silver earrings completed the outfit. Amy looked at him for a while and smiled. "What? did i scare you so much that you lost your voice?" she teased.
"No, uh, you just surprised me."
"Huh?"
"I thought you were upstairs, that's all."
"Oh, then how would that surprise you?"
"Uh, let's just get some studying done. i've got a huge bio test tomorrow."
"Really? Who do you have?"
"Uh, i have Mr. Walsh."
"Oh, i have Mrs. Kuber."
"Oh. um, what do you want to study first?"
"I don't really have a preference, but why don't we start with bio, considering you have a test tomorrow. it just might be the first test you actually pass."
"Wrong."
"Oh, right. it might be the first test that you pass AND studied for."
"Still wrong."
"Ok, enough with the wise guy talk. what are you getting at?"
"I've passed all of my tests with at least an 85, and i happen to be in all honors classes."
"Oh, that's a new one on me."
"You really are mean, do you know that?"
"Uh huh."
"We've got studying to do." he mumbled, suddenly feeling shy again. he just called the prettiest girl alive mean! but he had been teasing, she understood that much. but still, he couldn't just let it go in good conscious.
"Why so shy all of a sudden?" she said casually.
"Huh?"
"Don't pretend you don't know what i'm talking about, Anthony."
"Oh, don't worry about it, ok?" he said, a bit irritated. it was hard to keep his cool, but he tried, just for Amy.
"Hey, i was just asking." her voice had a slight edge in it. she opened her textbook. "Page 132. chapter 7 section 1. that's where all bio classes are, including honors." she said without enthusiasm.
Anthony felt guilty. he should have controlled his temper a bit better. he should have known better than to have used an irritated tone to Amy. it was fault, though he didn't like to admit it. if he couldn't draw her in, as he had hoped at first, he was just going to have to push her away, something he didn't want to think about.
but as the hours passed, Amy showed no signs of forgiving him. Anthony closed his textbook gently, hinting the end of studying. Amy saw it and got his point. she followed his example and got up to put on her coat.
"Wait." Anthony said softly. But amy didn't listen. she just shrugged into her coat and gathered her books.
