Egyptian Night
|
I walked under the star filled sky. The moon was full and luminescent. It seemed that I would be caught at any moment. But no. I couldn’t be caught. I had to find out for myself. I had to find out if the rumors of Pharaoh Ialu were true. I had heard the slaves over talking. They talked about the missing slaves. Missing slaves? I was not informed of this. I should have been. I may be only fourteen, but I had some rule over the slaves. They said that they had seen with their own eyes Pharaoh Ialu lure young girls and one had even said they’ve seen him do things to them. Terrible things. The other slaves seemed to shudder at those words, and no more was said. What terrible things had Pharaoh Ialu done? I shook my head, I couldn’t think about it.
I had ordered a few slaves in private to build a secret path inside the tomb. If they uttered a word to anyone about this order, then I would have them killed. I loved having people killed. I saw my first execution when I was six. The Pharaoh was my mother’s deceased brother’s son. I was royalty by blood. All royalty were allowed to view executions. Ever since that day, I would order an execution anytime I could, and I could quite a lot. I smirked as I put my back against the warm sand of the tomb. Yes, I was Shemei, the desired one. I myself had lured plenty of men into the darkness, only to have them executed the next day for violating a member of the royal family.
I laughed quietly, the sound accompanied only by the soft wind. I found the secret passage and went inside. I expected it to be dark, but the tomb was lighted by torches. Torches? Why would there be torches in the Pharaoh’s tomb? I began to walk down a long tunnel. As I walked, I thought about the Pharaoh’s death. He was so young, being only eighteen. He had just recently became Pharaoh, what had caused his death? And that strange way Pharaoh Ialu’s ceremony was at night. What was that for? It was time to find out the truth.
My sandals made little noise against the soft sand. I felt like some one was watching me. I stopped and spun around, my gold bracelets clanking against each other. No one there. Then, I heard a voice.
“Shemei...” it whispered through the tomb. It was barely audible, but I know I heard it. I turned back as a soft wind blew past me, making the flames of the torches flicker. The shadows danced on the walls, the flames threatening to go out. I closed my eyes and prayed to the gods to keep the torches aflame. I opened my eyes and sighed a breath of relief as the wind stopped and my path was still lit. I continued to walk.
Was I scared? No, not me. What was I afraid of? I tossed my long black braid behind my back as I prepared to enter a doorway. This was it. I looked around at all the items Pharaoh Ialu needed to advance into the afterlife. Strange. I didn’t see jars. Every Pharaoh was mummified, there organs put into jars. Maybe the jars were in another part of the tomb. That had to be it.
I advanced toward the jewel in crested coffin. The red and green and blue jewels sparkled in the light. I ran my hand across it. He was in here. He had to be. I slowly put my ear to the chest of the coffin, and as I did so, a strong wind blew, stronger than the one before. I retracted, backing up against the wall. The torches went out, and I was left in complete darkness. I could hear the sound of my breath coming out in small gasps. Then, something creaking. It sounded like something opening slowly. No I was not about to wait and found out if my thoughts were correct. I followed the wall until I reached the tunnel I had followed here. I then sprinted down the tunnel, holding the folds of my skirt above my knees. I had to get out of here.
Suddenly I felt hands on my waist. I screamed as I tripped over my skirt and fell to the ground. My jaw hit hard and my lip was cut. I was flipped over onto my back. I couldn’t see what was above me, but I drew the blade from my hip and slashed. It connected and the person was off me. I scrambled to my feet and raced to the opening. I was finally outside.
I ran until I could see the palace. Then I stopped and looked behind me. No one was there. I touched my lip, my hand coming back with blood. It would be swollen. I cursed slightly. Who was in the tomb? Was it a thief trying to take Pharaoh Ialu’s gold? Was it a guard? Or was it...the Pharaoh himself?
“Shemei...” I heard my name. It was that same barely audible voice. I felt the wind again, and clutched the blade still in my hand. The wind stopped, and I felt a strong hand on my wrist, stopping the knife, and another on my throat. He was behind me.
“Shemei.” He said, his voice low. “Desired one.”
“M..my lord...?” I stammered.
“Shemei, you’ve wounded me.” He squeezed my wrist and my hand opened, dropping the knife. He then spun me around to face him. I looked up. It really was Pharaoh Ialu
“You’re alive ” I almost screamed, a smile coming to my face. His eyes had a slight glow, his skin slightly luminescent. His lips curved into a small smirk.
“You are....you are alive, right?” my voice stammered as I tried to back away. His arm slid around my waist and pulled me closer.
“In a sense, yes.” He answered. His smirk grew and I noticed two sharp teeth slightly protruding from his mouth. I was now afraid. I twisted around, trying to free myself. He pulled me back and wrapped his arms around me from behind. He was stronger than I remembered, to strong to be human.
“Let me go ” I yelled, hoping that any of the guards would hear me. I kept struggling and he grabbed my chin, forcing me to face him. He then licked the blood from my lip and I screamed. Suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my neck. I stopped screaming. I felt the blood being drained from me and I could hardly breath. My vision spotted and blurred, then a wave of euphoria shot over me. I let out a sigh that was close to my last breath as he pulled back, holding me up in his arms.
“Shemei,” he said. His voice sounded distant. “I’m going to give you gift, to live for all eternity by my side as my queen.” Somehow he got the knife and sliced his hand, all without letting me go. He put his hand to my mouth and instinctively I drank it. This sweet, metallic taste that I would get to share with him for years and years to come.
