David stared at me and then started laughing hysterically. I lowered my head in shame. Did he really think I was joking? Higerth glared at me and I met his gaze, but I couldn't keep it, so I lowered my eyes as well.
"David, this isn't a joke." Higerth growled.
"What do you mean this isn't a joke?" He gasped. I could tell his chest was hurting from the laughing, but he was trying to ignore it.
"David..." I said hesitantly, " we aren't lying to you. Do you really think we would put you in so much pain just for a stupid little prank?"
"But that isn't possible. There's no way you can be more powerful then me. Especially, if you are saying you nearly killed my grandfather. He's nearly as strong as Rani. Almost as old too. By the way, where is he?"
Higerth smuggled a growl. "He had to be taken to Rani's house. He was in worse shape then you, and you had a tree limb sticking through you."
David's face went white and he sat there silently just looking down. The look on his face was even more painful compared to the gilt.
I couldn't take it any more. I turned around and ran out the door. I threw the front door open and didn't stop to close it. I just ran and ran. I didn't pay attention to where I was going. All I wanted was to get as far away from that house as my feet would let me.
I continued to run until my journey was stopped short by a cliff, and there I stopped. I sat at the edge and watched the sun rise. My tears threatened to fall from my eyes, but I wouldn't let them.
I stayed there until after sunset and watched the moon rise. I wasn't going to move. I didn't want to. I didn't want to hurt anyone else. It was the most horrible feeling in the world to know I could kill them, even right now.
I forced my thoughts back and stared at the moon.
"Beautiful isn't it?"
I froze and listened as Higerth came up to me and sat beside me on the cliff.
"Rani has asked me to bring you back to our house."
"I'm not going back." I whispered.
"You have no choice, Queen Rani has ordered it."
"Screw Rani."
He sucked in a breath. "If I were you, I would watch my tong. Saying something like that can get you killed." He spoke softly, almost in a nice tone.
"What doesn't get you killed around here."
"Good point," He laughed softly. We sat on the cliff and looked at the moon together in silence.
"Why are you being nice to me?" I asked suspiciously.
He looked at the moon a little longer. "Why not?" He met my gaze.
"Because I nearly killed your family."
"Well..." He ran his hand through his short hair. "I could have been a little...understanding. I of all people know how thirst affects us. You just scared me and...what I'm trying to say is...I'm sorry."
"What, did Rani order you to apologize?" I asked with an edge to my voice.
"No."
"Oh,...well... I'm sorry too."
"How about we start off on a clean slate?" He stuck out his hand, "Hi, I'm Higerth Staine."
I tried not to, but a smile slid across my face and I shook his hand. "Hello, my name is Karsea Dren."
We both laughed lightly and Higerth helped me up and led the way home.
