The next day, Annie’s mom came in at around 1 in the afternoon to tell Annie goodbye.

            “Why can’t I go?” Annie asked quietly.

            “Because your father planned this for he and I.” She replied.

            “It’s not your anniversary or anything, though, is it?”

            “No… but well… I’m not sure.” Her mom touched Annie’s hand, but Annie just as quickly pulled it under her sheet. Her mom sighed and moved towards the door. “Goodbye Annie. We’ll see you in July!”

            Annie grumbled a goodbye and smiled after her mom closed the door.

            Rather than going back to sleep, Annie quietly got off her top bunk, and sat on top of the clothing pile in her closet, shutting the door and turning on her book light.

            Dear Diary, She wrote in the book she keeps hidden amongst her clothes. Today, mom and dad are leaving the state for a month. I don’t know why dad won’t let me go, but I’m sure I’ll have plenty of fun without them being here. However, I will become awfully lonely being here alone for a whole month… Maybe I should ask someone to come over and stay with me… no. I can’t do that. Their parents will want to know if it’s okay with my parents. Annie paused when she heard the front door slam shut and the deadbolt lock. She smiled, and quickly wrote her ending in her entry. They just walked out the door… and as soon as they leave the driveway, I will have free roam of the house for the next month. I’m just glad that mom went grocery shopping last night and completely filled both freezers and the fridge. Not to mention all the boxed and canned things in the pantry. At least I won’t go hungry! Until next time, Annie.

            She closed her book, replaced the lock on it, stuck the pen in its spiral binding, and stuffed it back into her clothing pile. She opened her closet door and smiled, stretching.

            She walked to the kitchen while singing “Free, free, I’m free at last! Thank God almighty I’m free at last!” She stopped when she saw the note on the fridge door. Her mom had written it.

            Annie smiled and pulled out the carrots to begin cooking dinner.

            Two and a half hours later, Annie was eating dinner and watching Mythbusters on T.V. when there was a knock at the front door. I didn’t see any car pull in… She thought, setting down her fork and glancing out the window.

            Sure enough, there was a little blue car sitting in the driveway. Annie got up, and peeked through the peephole in the front door.

            It was Brandon Russell.

            Annie’s heart skipped a beat or seven as she opened the door. “Brandon?!”

            “Hi Annie.” Brandon waved his cute little wave through the screen door.

            Annie unlocked the screen door and let Brandon in. “Please take your shoes off.” She said as she shut the door and turned around.

            “I didn’t come at a bad time, did I?”

            “No… I guess not. I mean, I didn’t even know you were coming!” Annie smiled and motioned for Brandon to take a seat on the love seat. “I just made dinner, would you like some?”

            “Uh… not really.” Brandon looked at Annie’s plate. “What is it?”

            “Hungarian pork roast.” She replied, sitting down. “Here, try some!” She stabbed a piece with her fork and held it out for him.

            He took it from the fork and bit it. Chewed thoughtfully for a moment, and smiled. “You made this?”

            Annie smiled. “All by myself!”

            “Awesome.”

            “Want some? I can get you a plate…”

            “Nah… that’s not why I came.” Brandon said as he finished what he had.

            Annie was confused, and her mind kept drifting back to her day dream she’d had yesterday of her and Brandon.

            “Okay… then why’d you come?” Annie asked, turning the volume down on the T.V.

            “Well… I’ve been thinking for a while…” Brandon looked almost nervous. “And I was wondering if…” He paused to look up at Annie. “Will you be my girlfriend?”

            Annie’s brain halted. Wh-what did he just say?! Am I hearing things? “Of course! I’d love to!” She replied without waiting too long to answer.

            Brandon smiled and stood up, taking Annie’s hands and pulling her up with him. “Come, I want to show you something outside.” He smiled.

            They slipped on shoes and went outside. Brandon shut the door behind them and quickly covered her eyes.

            “Hey!” Annie laughed, reaching up and attempting to remove his hands.
