Orphan Luck [ch.6]
|
“I don’t know what a video game is, but I’ll watch.” I smiled. I was just fine with watching. I was in no hurry to try new things just yet.
“Are you sure? It’s really fun.” He smiled.
“I’m sure.”
“Okay.” he pushed a button and the screen flashed to life.
On the screen were all different colors. There were different shaped boxes falling.
“This is called Tetris.” Martin explained as he pushed buttons. “When I push these buttons, it moves the blocks on the screen.”
I watched in fascination as he told me what it was about.
“The goal is to fill a row across the screen from left to right. When it’s completely full with the different parts of blocks, it will magically disappear. The more rows cleared, the higher the score.” He explained as he cleared rows incredibly fast.
“Wow, I’ve never seen anything so colorful before!” I exclaimed. I looked at him and smiled, he had his eyes trained on the TV screen, but he smiled as well.
“If you don’t mind me asking,” He paused the game and looked at me. “How long have you been on your own?”
“Since I was six.”
“Wow, what happened? I mean… did you run away? Did your parents die?”
“Well, when I was four, my drunken father beat my mom to death.” I said. I’d already shared my story with a few people along my journey, so I knew my lines pretty well.
Martin cringed at that. “That’s horrible.”
“Then when I was six, he threw me out into the world on a rainy night.” I sighed. “I never looked back, fearing that he would kill me too if I returned. So I’ve been wandering wherever the Lord takes me since then.”
“Oh, you’re a Christian?” Martin smiled slightly.
“Yeah.” I smiled as well.
“That’s great. So are we.”
“Well, that’s good to know.”
Just then, Susan appeared in the doorway.
“Kwanii?”
“Yes?” I turned around.
“Come with me please.” She motioned down the hall.
“Okay.” I smiled again at Martin and got off the cushion.
Stepping into the hallway, I heard the game start up again. I looked over my shoulder and saw Martin trained on the game once again.
“Your soup is ready.” the maid smiled at me from another doorway. “Come in and sit down.”
I followed the maid into a dining room. It was decorated in dark green with tan under colors. There were leaf patterns upon the walls and window curtains. There was a long, wooden table with many chairs surrounding it.
“You may sit wherever you please.” The maid said.
I sat in a chair nearest to the end of the table. Susan sat next to me, at the end of the table. The maid brought a bowl of steaming broth and placed it in front of me. She then set a spoon next to the bowl and placed a paper napkin on the other side.
“Enjoy.” She said and walked out without another word.
I looked down at the bowl. It looked good, but I remembered my manners. I bowed my head and blessed it first. Saying my prayer silently so Susan couldn’t hear it.
‘Lord, most gracious father, I thank you right now for what you have done for me. I thank you for bringing me to these kind people who have provided for me more than I could ever have imagined. I pray now that you bless this food to my body, that you help it to strengthen my weakness and nourish my body. I thank you many times over and over and over. Let these people know in their hearts that what they are doing for me means more than any they could imagine. I praise ye oh heavenly father. In your great and holy name, a-men.’I lifted my head and looked at Susan. She looked at me in almost pure amazement.
“You, you’re a believer?”
“A Christian, yes.” I lifted the spoon and plunged it into the broth.
“I’m astounded. I’ve never meet an orphan, excuse me, child...”
“No, it’s okay, you call me an orphan. I’m used to it.”
“Still, I’ve never met one who believes in God.” Susan smiled.
I brought the spoon to my lips and sipped the broth silently. It was delicious. Not watered down as the broth at an orphanage I once stayed at when I was ten. I dipped the spoon again and was amazed to bring up with it, noodles and a piece of chicken. I took the chicken into my mouth and chewed it. It felt different to be eating soup that was more than broth. There were actually noodles and other food in it. It was amazingly good.
“This soup is delicious.” I said.
“Yes, the maid makes incredible food. That is why we hired her.” Susan once again smiled sweetly at me.
I finished the bowl and wiped my mouth with respect. I set it, folded over, next to the bowl and placed the spoon upon it.
“Your finished. Would you like more?”
“Oh, no, I’m quite full.” I amazed, even myself with that comment. I hadn’t eaten anything in like three days, and here I was completely filled with only one bowl of soup.
“Are you sure?” Susan stood and took the bowl and spoon and napkin from in front of me.
“I am.” I stood up, and pushed my chair in.
“You are, with out a doubt, the first orphan through here with such amazing manners!” Susan said as I followed her to the kitchen.
The maid looked up as we walked in.
“Finished already? Would you like any more?”
“She says she’s full.” Susan replied, placing the bowl and spoon into the sink.
“Amazing.”
“Indeed.” She tossed my used napkin into a trashcan.
With that, Susan turned and walked back out, I followed, not sure what else to do. In the hall, Susan turned and spoke to me.
“What would you like to do my dear?” Susan asked.
“I beg your pardon?” I wasn’t sure I’d heard right. Did she really want me to choose what I wanted to do?Comments
