Ex-Girlfriend Problems [pt.1]

Drama Created on 2-1-08 Views(113) Story Rating G

Crouched low in the back of the den, I prayed that whatever animals created this little hideout wouldn’t come back while I was in here. I was glad that I found it, and rather lucky I might add. I brushed my strawberry-blonde hair back from my face, but it was long and fell back into my eyes once again.

I sighed and peeked out through the bush that was partially covering my hideout. I heard a twig snap in the distance and listened carefully. Was it her? Had she actually followed me?

I struggled to see, yet not be seen. It was easier said than done. I sat back and gave up trying to see. I think I caught a glimpse of her lilac purple blouse, but I’m not sure.

Maybe I should introduce myself. I’m Dylan. I’m 16 and on the run. Okay, that makes me sound like a criminal; far from it. Unless breaking up with your girlfriend is criminal, in that case I’m guilty.

About two hours ago, when Sylvia showed up at my house, I told her that I needed space; that I didn’t want to go out with her anymore. Well, I thought she was going to take it okay, until she came back about an hour ago with a knife, rope, and roll of duct tape.

Since my parents are out of town for a week and a half, I was on my own. She has a key to our house, which was my dad’s idea, so locking it up wouldn’t have helped. Plus, when she KNOWS that you’re in there, it doesn’t make matters any better.

So I ran. I took off, jumping over the moat in my backyard and ran into the woods. I know that it’s been at least an hour since I ran because I have a watch. I heard her screaming after me as I ran from the house. She said something about that I can run, but I can’t hide.

As I was walking, I thought to myself that I’d like to beg to differ. It looked like she wasn’t following me, so how could she catch me?

So, here I sit. Shortly after that, I thought I heard her calling my name, so I panicked and ran. I don’t know which way is home, but I know that I’ve got to be at least a few miles from it.

As I ran, I was looking for somewhere, anywhere to hide. I even searched trees that might be good to climb. Finding nothing, I was starting to lose hope.

Then, I tripped and fell. When I looked up, this little den was in front of me. I scrambled in and here I stayed. I’ve been here for about a half hour now. No sign of Sylvia, or the crazed girl that once was Sylvia. I yawned, I’m not sure how it’s possible, but I’m getting tired. There’s a girl out here somewhere who wants to kill me, and I’m about to fall asleep.

I blinked, once, twice, three times. It was still dark. I looked around, I couldn’t see much, but what I could see wasn’t familiar. I tried sitting up, but my head hit something. Dirt fell down around me. Not much, but a little bit.

Then it all came back to me. I was still in the little den in the woods. I had fallen asleep and now it was nighttime. Great, just the place I want to be, some unknown animal’s home in the middle of the night.

Well, you’ve really made a smart move here, Dylan. I told myself. It was true, I wasn’t the brightest color crayon in the box. This just proved that all the more.

I slowly crawled out of the den and stood up. My neck was stiff. Well, guh! You just slept for hours in a den probably intended for hamsters! I stretched, looked around, and was surprised.

I could actually see. Not just like the moon was shining down on me, far from it because the moon was blocked by the thick roof of treetops above me. No, I could see really clearly though.

That’s when I remembered that I had night vision. One of the few dragon traits I inherited from my father and mother. They were both dragon-human wholes. Which means they both have two separate DNA strands; one for dragon and one for human. They couldn’t morph or anything, but there are few little traits that showed from the dragon DNA.

Mine was night vision, and fire breathing. Oh yeah, and if you count it as a trait, the gigantic dragon wings that protruded from my upper back. I don’t know why I didn’t think of those earlier while I was fleeing Sylvia, but now I just felt stupid all over again.

I unfolded my wings and stretched them. The felt fine and in one try I was off the ground, headed up through the thick trees.

Dang! Too thick! I perched high on a maple tree and looked around. I couldn’t fly up, the branches were too thick together. I spotted a clearing a short distance away.

I took off and headed for the clearing. Once I got there, I landed quietly on the ground. I looked around and saw that it was an old swamp bed that had long since dried up.

I looked up and saw stars and the moon. A clear shot! I took off straight up and surfaced above the treetops. I coasted in a circle, taking in my surroundings.
