The wind brushed against he bruised cheek as a gentle caress. It was the new moon so light was at a minimal and it seemed to her that there was none. Her world was dark. The day after her marriage was the day the light was swallowed from her world. It was the day he laid his first hand against her. She'd been beat that day for simply burning his toast. The beating was the worst one so far. The reminders marred her body. She couldn't look in the mirror anymore for all the pain that covered her.
She stepped into the creek. The water was ice. It felt like needles pricking at the skin along her ankle. Taking several more steps put her out to her waist. The water's temperature made her body involuntarily shiver. She couldn't take it anymore. Her family was gone. She was alone to face this monster and even that she could stand no longer. The pain was to much. The self inflicted hatrid was taking over. It was swallowing her.
If she wasn't worth anything to him, then she wasn't worth anything. Right? Her mothers voice floated back into her mind, "You're strong, wonderful and worthy of so much more than this man. I won't stop you from this marriage, but I will always be here. Remember that YOU ARE WORTHY!" Stepping back out of the creek she looked up and saw her first star. It shot across the sky and she wished, 'Let me be free and able to love again.' She made her way back to the house and packed quietly. She took only what she most desired and needed. Packing the bag she placed it in his car and rolled it out of the drive way. She drove till to the nearest city and bought a plane ticket. She was headed home.
