The New Kid

Other Created on 5-16-08 Views(37) Story Rating G

Every time Nolleen Kasieden looked out of her dusty, broken bedroom window, she wished she could live anywhere but the ramshackle cabin, on their hundred acre property, that she now called home. In the middle of the drought, there was nothing to do because of the frequent dust storms. She wanted to go back to her real home, in Conneticut, but that would never happen.

Nolleen's mother had died only recently, back in November. She'd been a writer of just about everything -- novels, short stories, lyrics, and even poetry. Nolleen had considered her mother her idol, and had always wanted to take after her. Now, at sixteen and living in the middle of nowhere, she knew that was never going to happen.

At 7:30 every weekday morning, Nolleen would leave for school. She'd get there just in time for nine, and would be the only one silent in their class of fifteen. Even the shy year nines were louder than she was. She was new here, and they weren't going to let her forget it, until Nicholas Jackson walked into class for the first time.

Being the official new kid, he immediately took the nearest empty seat and assumed the same state of silent loneliness that had plagued Nolleen for two weeks. Suddenly, Nolleen was visible, and Nick was invisible.
