My Wrong Turn (5)
|
My vision starts to return to me when I realize that I’m lying in a hospital bed. I feel around my neck to find a cloth wrapped around it. I try to speak but all that came out was a harsh scream. My neck started to sting. Tears started to run down my face. I tried to get out of bed but I felt weak. A few doctors came in to help me. One of them gave me a shot. Soon my whole body went numb and I started to relax a little. Soon I went back to sleep. When I open my eyes I saw a shadow in the corner of the room. I stared at it till I recognized it was James. He walked over to the side of the bed and sat in the chair next to me.
“Danny, i’m so sorry. I should have just let you go.” Tears started to run down his cheeks.
“It’s not your fault. I should have taken the bus home instead.” My voice cracked here and there.
He kept his hand locked in mine. All I could do was cry myself to sleep. When I woke up again he wasn’t there. Instead, my brother and sister were talking to some guy in a business suit.
“If you don’t find the evidence in time for the court sentence, then the judge will have to let her go.”
“How could you say that? You see my baby sister lying in a hospital bed, and all you can say is find the evidence. You guys even found her fingerprints. Isn’t that enough evidence for you.”
“It is for me, but not the jury. I’m very sorry. Please sign these release forms and return in two weeks.”
The guy left and all was quiet. I started to get up when my brother came over to lay me back down.
“Don’t get up baby girl. We need to tell you something.” He looks at me with tears in his eyes.”
“If it’s about the demon, Daniel, I just heard the conversation.” I said in a raspy voice.
“No. it’s about you. You’re not going to be able to live with us anymore. Social services said that you can pick where you want to stay till the judge gives us an answer about mom. Don’t worry, once this is all over and she’s out of our lives, the three of us will have a place of our own. Now go back to sleep.” He kissed my forehead and left my sister with me.
“So let’s change the subject. Who is this boyfriend of yours? I didn’t get to actually meet him the other night,” Mandy said.
“Well, his name is James. He’s not Fine or anything, but he’s ok. He knows how to play guitar. And he can dance, but it’s not as good as our dancing.” I laughed to myself.
“That’s ok. We need a new race in the family.”
We laughed a little when a knock came to the door. My brother came in with James. My sister followed my brother outside to leave the two of us alone. The door closed and James came up and kissed my lips.
“You look much better.” He said and gave me another kiss.
“I feel better.”
“Good. I got you something.”
He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a locket. I couldn’t help but laugh at the picture of us when we went to the Metal Bash Concert three months ago.
“Why did you give it to me now?”
“I just got the picture developed yesterday.”
“That explains a lot. I love it.” I gave him a quick kiss.
“Look, Danny. I came to tell you that if you need somewhere to stay, i’m always here.”
“I know. It’s just that it’s best if I stay with my cousin. She lives real close to the school and I know she has people that will keep an eye on me.”
“Oh, well I really wanted you to be with me for a while.” He gave me the puppy dog face.
“Don’t worry; I’ll get to see you a lot more than I did before. Especially since my cousin will be gone most of the time.”
“Ok. I’ll come by tomorrow. I love you.”
“Love you to.” He kissed me goodbye and left quicker than he came. I fell asleep shortly after.
When I woke the next morning, my cousin was sitting next to the bed.
“Good morning Candace. How long have you been sitting there?”
“Not to long. I came by to see how you were doing. I needed to tell you about you moving in. I can only let you stay for a month. My mom is coming home from the Child Care convention on a Thursday.”
“That’s fine. I got some back up.”
“Like who, your boyfriend?” she raised an eyebrow.
“As a matter of fact, he is my back up. He stopped by yesterday to ask me if I wanted to stay at his house. So I’ll tell him later about the situation.”
“Ok then. Well, I got to go. I don’t want to be late for work.”
I watch sternly as she leaves the room. I started to think about the fact the James wanted me to move in with him. It sounds like a really good idea, but I was scared. Scared that we might break up and I have to go back home where my own mother tried to kill me. Where I have to live everyday knowing what she did. Even though the scar won’t show as much and it didn’t affect me as bad, I still remember the look on her face. Not of a mother but a cold hearted human being. My thoughts drained all my energy and I fell asleep. Wondering what would happen to me.
