“Ok this isn’t funny any more. Can I take the blind fold off?”
“Don’t. We’re not there yet.” I could feel the car slowing to a stop when my door opens. I feel a hand grab mine and gently pull me out of the car.
“Am I almost there? This is starting to get annoying.”
“Don’t worry. Just watch your step.” It was James who was talking to me now.
“Ok. I think i’m ready for the surprise now.” I kept tripping over big objects, which was why I was annoyed.
“Ok. We’re here.” He takes the blind fold off to reveal to me some old bar. I kept thinking why a bar but I didn’t bother asking. I walked inside the bar to find in big letters hanging from a cloth saying “congratulations”.
“What’s this all for?” Why would they throw a party for me?
“It’s for your poem.” Miky explained, “We found out it was to be published in Sandra Wittings book of the poets. It had a lot of other people’s poems, but yours was considered one of the best. So she decided to give it an honorable mention. And we decided to throw this party for you.”
“Wow. I don’t know what to say. Thank you so much. It’s just that, why are we at an abandoned bar?”
“This is the only place where we can spend our time together with out interruption.” James gave Miky a look that I didn’t understand.
“Well then, I better get going. I have to babysit in an hour and I need to prepare for the little pipsqueaks. See you both tomorrow.” Sooner then we came, Miky was gone and down the road. I turn to face James and gave him ‘The Look’.
“Oh come on, I really wanted to spend time with you.” He threw on the puppy dog face.
“I hate it when you do that.” I kissed him quickly and went towards the bar to see if they left some kind of drinks behind. “Oh look, wine from the 1800’s. This is a special drink for a special celebration.”
“Ok that’s not funny. I really think we should celebrate. And maybe do something with the money.”
Ok. But, i’m not drinking. If I get in trouble, I’d have to kick your ass.”
“Why not, we won’t drink a lot. Please. Just a sip, I promise you won’t get into any trouble.”
“Ok, Fine. Just a sip though. That’s it.” I took a sip from the bottle and put it away. I wasn’t going to give it to him because he has to drive. And I didn’t want to drink any in the first place.
“I have to be back by 9, so we have until then to do whatever we want.” I reminded him, “What would you like to do?”
“I don’t know? Maybe we could just sit here and do nothing for 3 hours if you like.”
“Well that doesn’t sound exciting, but I’ll work something out.” I leaned to kiss him when we heard a car pull up. I could hear two guys talking outside and realized one of them sounded like my brother.
“This is the last time were going to do something like this.” Was all I heard and in an instant we heard a gunshot. It hit a bottle on the far end of the bar and burst into flames. We ran towards the back of the bar and ran to a nearby building we watched as the bar went up in flames behind it we saw a car drive away fast. If that was my brother what was he up to?
“What in the hell was that?” James said as we walked along the sidewalk. Well so much for a party.
“I don’t know”, Was all I could say. We ended up driving all the way to his house and went to a park just a block down his street. I sat on a swing while he started to push it.
“So what are you planning on doing with the money?” he started.
“I don’t know, maybe buy some clothes. Or I might save it for that electric guitar I want.”
“I don’t think you should get it now.”
“Why? I’ve been saving up for it since 8th grade”
“I know but its best if you wait.”
“And why do you care so much?
“I don’t. It’s just that… you can use that money for things you really need. Like a laptop for that story you want to write. What’s it called again?”
“It’s called ‘my wrong turn’, but I don’t need it know. I’ve been writing it on paper anyways. What I do need is some new outfits. I’m tired of all these ‘hand me downs’ It’s boring.”
“Ok what ever you say. But you should wait on that guitar.”
“Ok. I’ll wait on the guitar. Maybe we should go shopping now. I’ll get you something if you come with me.”
He stops the swing and looks at me with seriousness. “Shopping with you is like shopping for drag clothes for me. Wait till you and Michaela go next week or something. Besides I still have something to show you anyways.” He grabs my hand and runs towards the school down the street to the bus stop.
“Where are we going? Why can’t we take your car?” I asked trying to catch my breath.
“It’s a surprise.” He looks at me with his crooked smile.
“Oh, I hate surprises. Just tell me what it is. Please?” I said like a child.
“You’re just going to have to wait.” He holds my hand tighter as we get on the bus and take it down town towards my house. We got off the bus and headed for The Guitar Center. I was still confused about what he wanted to show me. We walk in to see a guy already waiting for us. What is he up to?
“Ok. I want you to close your eyes.” James said. I did as I was told and stood there for nearly five minutes. I started to get annoyed again
“You can open your eyes now.” I heard James say. I opened my eyes and couldn’t believe what I saw. It was a brand new Black Electric Guitar.
