                                Chapter 8

SLAM! I slammed the phone down after it hit voice mail. I’ve been trying to call Candice all day. I buried my head in my hands. I pressed my palms against my eyes hard. I pushed harder and harder, the more enraged I get, I couldn’t take it anymore. I couldn’t get anymore angry. I pounded my fist on the desk as hard as I could. Everything bounced in the air and a few pencils spilled over.
“ANSWER ME, YOU STUPID WOMAN!!!” I screamed at the phone. ID dialed Candice’s mom’s number.
Ring… Ring, It rang three more times. I became more impatient, Ring… “Hello?” It was Candice’s mom.
“Can I speak to Candice? It’s Jesse.” She became quiet, but I could hear faint whispers for about 10 seconds.
“Sorry. She isn’t home right now.” I rolled my eyes.
“I know she’s there. I really need to talk to her. It’s important.” I reported, losing even more of my patience. She paused again. More whispers.
“I’m sorry. She’s not feeling well.” She lied. I was fed up. I could feel the anger rise up once more.
“LET ME TALK TO CANDICE!!!” I yelled. She sounded frightened.
“She can’t talk now.” She replied.
“STOP LYING!!! LET ME TALK TO MY WIFE!!!” I snapped at the top of my lungs.
Click. Beeeeeep…, the other line had hung up. I slammed the phone down again.
“See? She hates you. You’ll never get her back now.” Sarah whispered.
“Shut up.” I said lowly. She gave an evil giggle.
“Might as well kill yourself now. Before it gets worse.” She returned.
“Worse?” My anger slowly turned to sadness, “How could things possibly get worse?” She laughed again.
     “You’ll see.” She disappeared.

“Where’s Daddy? Why isn’t he here too?” Kyle asked when Candice tucked him in at 7 o’clock. She rubbed his forehead lovingly.
“Daddy is… sick. We have to stay here until he is all better.” She said quietly.
“When will he get better?” Candice shed a tear.
“I don’t know.” She replied. Kyle reached up and wiped the tears off of her cheek with his small hands.
“Please, don’t cry, Mommy,” Candice closed her eyes, “Maybe Daddy will be better soon.” He added.
     “Maybe,” She paused, “Hopefully.”

“$164.22 is your total.” I gave the cashier the money and he gave me the gun and bullets.
“Have a good day.” He said. I turned to the door.
“Uh-huh.” And I got to the truck and drove away. Three minutes had passed until Sarah appeared in the passenger’s seat.
“Are you finally taking my advice?” She asked, an evil grin spread across her face.
“What’s it to you?” I snapped coldly.
“Everything. I’m glad you’re doing as I advised… If you waited any longer, they’d put you in the mental ward. Look at yourself!” I looked in the mirror above me. My blonde hair had grown long and disheveled. It started turning a very dirty blondish color instead of it’s usual golden. My skin turned pale green ad I had black bags under my eyes. My eyes were red with straint. Red lines surrounded my pupils. My own reflection made me want to be sick.
“I’ve been really depressed lately. So what?” She rolled her eyes.
“You call two and a half months ‘recent’? Ever since Candice and Kyle left, you’ve turned to crap,” She made a good point, I thought, “Put yourself out of your own misery.”
     “W-” I started.
“Think about it.” And she left serious and with a straight face.
Wow… For a sweet little girl, she’s pretty evil.

Candice looked at the clock. ‘12:32 PM.’ It’s August 30th and she had just checked Kyle out early from school. She looked in the mirror at him. He was doing his homework, occasionally picking up his hands, touching his fingers-obviously trying to count.
She remembered Kyle’s surprised look on his face when he saw her. He ran into her arms and they walked out of the school. He had asked why she checked him out early and she just said that it was a surprise.
She was taking him to see Jesse. They haven’t even spoken to him for almost three months. Candice kept thinking about what Kyle’s expression would be when they got there, when Kyle looked up from his homework.
“Mommy?” He called. She looked in the mirror.
“Yes?” To her surprise, he asked:
     “Does Daddy still love us?”

“This is the last thing I will ever write. All alone in this house for three months has driven me insane.
Don’t look for a Will or Testament because I have no actual possessions. The only things I’ve had were two loves. My wonderful wife, Candice, and my beautiful son, Kyle. I never lived to see my beautiful daughter born. She is to be born in a few weeks.
Candice, if you’re reading this, I’ve written your name on the bullet. The bullet I used to put me out of my own misery. You were the last thing to go through my mind. And through my head.
Candice, Kyle, Ma & Pa, and my soon-to-be-daughter, Claire:
                          I love you,
                            And
                        Good-bye”

I put down the pen and paper. I wiped the tear off of my cheek and picked up the bullet with Candice’s name and the gun. I placed the bullet in the socket and closed it.
A knock on the door startled me. I didn’t move. Three more knocks.
“ Daddy?! Hi, Daddy!! It’s me, Kyle!!” My heart skipped. A tear fell from my eyes. I positioned the gun under my chin. I was ready.
“I love you, Daddy! A lot!” Kyle added brightly.
“I love you, Jesse!” It was  Candice. “Let’s go in.” She added quietly. My eyes streamed like crazy and my hand shook, but I didn’t lower the gun.
As soon as the door swung open, the trigger was pulled.
