                                                 Chapter 7

“Just three more months to go! This is going to be so exciting!” A six-month pregnant Candice said. I kissed her lips.
“I know. Okay, so… What should we have for dinner tonight?” I questioned.
“Um… Have we had cheese burgers this week?” Candice asked. We made our way towards the front door. I grabbed the keys.
“I think we had those on Monday.” She put her arm around my neck and we kissed.
     “Then just surprise me.”
“Okay, baby. I’ll be back in a bit.”
“Okay. Drive safely.” I went out the door, into the truck and took off towards the grocery store.
“I don’t think we’ve had spaghetti in a while. I think we’ll have that.” I spoke to myself.
“Sounds good, Jesse.” Said a voice suddenly. I jumped and lost the steering wheel. I swerved back in the right lane. I turned around. No one. I looked back at the road.
“I’m back. No warm welcoming?” I turned around slowly. There Sarah’s ghost was again. I quickly turned back to the road. I quit doing drugs when Candice and I got back together. Why is she here now?
“Leave me alone! Why did you have to come back now? FOUR years have gone by. What made you come back NOW?!”
“I just thought it was time. Time to let you know that I’m never going away and there’s no way to get rid of me. How’s Kyle? And Candice?” She spoke mysteriously.
“Kyle is going to kindergarten in the fall. Candice is going to have the second baby in three months. Why do you want to know?” She ignored my question.
“So… is the next one a boy or girl?”
“Why do you want to know? It’s not even your business. And besides,” I turned the steering wheel sharply, “You’re dead.”
“Oh, Jesse, Jesse, JESSE. These words displease me. Let me ask you one question,” I rolled my eyes, “Can Candice manage as a single parent?” I quickly turned around. She was gone. I heard distant evil laughter.
     “Awe. Not again.”

“What did she mean? What’s she going to do?!” I asked myself while getting the tomato sauce, “Why did she ask that?” I rolled up to the check-out counter and put my groceries on the counter.
“Nice day today, no?” The cashier, a small, old, Chinese woman, asked.
“Been very warm lately, but it’s been nice.” I replied.
“Yes. Very bright. Your total is $42.52.” I took out my wallet and gave her a $50.
“$7.48 is your change. You have nice day. And come back soon.” She said politely.
“Okay. Have a nice day.” I said back. I walked out and towards the truck.
“Hello again.” I immediately stopped walking and turned my head. Sarah was right behind me. I started walking faster, my strides full of anger.
“Will you stop following me? Why don’t you go haunt your parents? They’re the ones who did this to you, not me.” I snapped, trying to keep my voice down.
“Oh, stop kidding yourself. Sure they drove me away, but YOU decided to stop and pick me up. Then kiss me and not tell me about your girlfriend. It was you.” I became infuriated and stopped. I turned around and yelled-no idea how loud my voice was.
“You sure are ticking me off! I told you a million times that I never meant anything that happened! I said sorry, but now that I think about it, I’m not! I’m actually GLAD you died! Or else, I wouldn’t have Kyle, a girl on the way, and a FANTASTIC wife! Oh.. I’m SO happy you’re dead!” She also became angry with these words.
“You know what? I’m going to drive you crazy. Make you angry. I’m getting right under your skin.” I tried to hit her with the grocery bag, but it went right through her and she laughed an evil laugh and dissolved away.

“What’s the matter, Jess? You look angry.” Candice asked while twirling her spaghetti. I looked up.
“Nothing. I’m just anxious for the baby.” I smiled. She perked back up.
“Me to. Have you thought up any girl’s names yet?”
“I was thinking of… Cassie or Casey.” I informed.
“Hm… I was thinking of a Charity or Claire.”
“Claire? Is Claire going to be crying a lot?” Kyle chimed in.
“Well, Kyle, all babies cry. Some more than others.” Candice said. Kyle nodded and we kept eating.
“How’s it going meth-head?” Sarah cruelly greeted.
“Will you SHUT UP?!” I yelled. Kyle and Candice jumped and stared at me. I gave an embarrassed smile and calmed down.
“Sorry… just thinking out loud.” I covered. They gave me a strange look, but kept eating.
“So, what are Candice and Kyle going to do when you’re dead?”
“SHUT THE F-” I caught up with myself and turned my voice back down,”-front door. Please shut the front door; it’s getting kind of chilly.” Kyle smiled, but Candice stared at me strangely. Kyle got up.
     “Okay, Daddy.” He said.
“Thank you, Kyle.” I replied, smiling nervously. Sarah gave me an evil laugh and faded away.
“You’re lucky you caught up with yourself.” Candice said getting back to her food. Kyle returned and sat down and started eating again.
That was too close, I thought, You got to keep your cool. Be in control. Don’t go insane.

“Please, stop crying, Candice! I’m sorry!” I yelled. She looked up and yelled back.
“Jess, you’re seriously starting to scare me! You yell at nothing! You speak to the air! You try to hit the air! What is WITH you?”
     “You really want to know?”
     “YES!!!” She snapped.
“She’s back! Sarah’s spirit is back! She says creepy things like, ‘Can Candice manage as a single parent?’ and ‘What are they going to do when you’re gone?’!!!” She paused.
“Do you really expect me to believe that? You’re crazy, Jesse! Get some help. Me and Kyle  will stay with my mom until you’re better.” I started to reply, but she was already out the door.
