Chapter 4
At 5:40, I hear roosters waking for our alarms. My eyes open and I sit up in the bed, blankets still covering my lower body. I stretch my arms and take a glance at my diary. I decided to pick it up and make my entry for the day.
“October 4, 2001:”
But that’s all I got to. I set it back on the dresser and headed to the bathroom with my clothes. On my way down the hall, I passed Jesse’s room and he walked out behind me. His hair was slightly messy and his eyes squinted, eye brows arched. He lifted his hand and ran his fingers through his hair, getting it out of his face. I turned to look at him completely and my eyes felt as if they would’ve popped out of my head. All he had on were his pajama pants and boxer shorts. I was about to turn in to the bathroom, my cheeks RED, when he spoke.
“Good morning. Did you sleep okay?” He asked, apparently more awake. I turned to him, trying to fight back the giggles.
“Yes. The bed was very,” I let out a tiny giggle, “comfortable. Thanks for asking. Did you sleep well?”
“Eh…Same as every night. Well it’s almost 5:50, so, I think we should get ready. I guess you’re using the bathroom, so I’ll just get dressed in my room.”
“Okay, see you at breakfast?”
“M…Alright.” Then we both went to the separate rooms. I’m not so used to dressing fast, so when I reached the kitchen, everyone was sit down, fully dressed, and had their plates set out in front of them.
“I guess I was too slow, huh?” I asked while I sat at the kitchen table beside Jesse.
“It’s okay for your first day. I actually expected you to be a little late.” I wasn’t sure if this was a good thing or an insult so I just smiled faintly. I looked down at my plate and a, yet another, perfect meal: sunny-side eggs and grits with 2 slices of bacon.
“Breakfast sure does look good, ma’am.”
“Thank you, Sarah. It’s so nice to another woman around the house. Especially one with such good manners. Isn’t that right, Jess?” Gayle complimented and looked toward Jesse.
Jesse had food crammed in his mouth at the moment and blushed a little bit. He swallowed it and replied, “Sure is. I love having Sarah stay with us.” He turned and smiled at me.
Unfortunately, breakfast only lasts about 15 minutes, and then we head to the farm, leaving Gayle in the house to clean.
When we reached the farmhouse, we had to listen to some instructions.
“Alright then!” Bobby clapped his hands together, “Sarah, since you’re new to this, Jess will show you what to do and make sure you does everything right. Can you do that for me?”
“Yes, Dad.” Jesse turned to me after Bobby left. “Sarah, let’s put on our protective boots and gloves.”
“Uh…Okay.” I said absent mindedly. So we grabbed the boots and gloves and put them on.
“Alright! Now let’s go get to work! Are you ready?” Jesse asked as if he were the head cheerleader.
“Um…Not really.” I said looking around with slight disgust.
“Good! Now let’s go!” Jesse said, still smiling. I tried my hardest not to burst into laughter.
We headed out of the supply room and went to where the horses were. Yuck!! It smelled horrible! Thus, our first job: cleaning the horses “rest room areas”. I was grossed out beyond my mind! But Jesse’s presence made everything better.
We were shoveling away at the whatever and about 30 seconds later, I started humming.
“What is that?” Jesse asked.
“This? It’s…eh.” I pointed at the “brownies”. He started laughing and commented at my dumb reply.
“No. I know what that is. I meant what you were humming.” Jesse had trouble getting all the words out without bursting into more laughter.
“Oh, that,” I turned just barely pink with embarrassment. “It’s just a lullaby my grandmother used to sing to me when I was a baby. It was the only thing that could get me to cheer up or fall asleep.”
“It’s really sweet,” His faced formed a smile as he looked up at me from shoveling,” You must have had a nice grandmother.” I started smiling more and this time I only turned a little bit pink over nothing, but Jesse always had that way of making me blush.
“No offense or anything, but why do your cheeks turn pink or red all the time?” This time, I was so embarrassed because he noticed my blushing so much, I turned bright scarlet.
“Um… It’s really embarrassing to admit it… I’m just not so used to hearing so many compliments and kisses on the cheek by boys. Back in my hometown, I wasn’t exactly ‘Miss Popular’ or ‘Miss Pretty Girl’. I was just ‘That girl over there’ or ‘That one girl.’” I smiled, “And besides, you make me blush.”
“Well, thank you. I kind of have that effect on women.” We laughed.
“Well it looks like we’re done here.” He said standing up straighter, leaning on the shovel.
“Uh-Okay then.” After that we went to spray the plants and grass with the water hose. Jesse turned the hose on me and it was such a surprise, I almost fell down. I picked up another hose and we sprayed each other for about 10 minutes. It was the most fun I’ve had since… since… Well, it was the most fun I’ve EVER had!
“It’s getting kind of dark so I guess we should get home.” I said through water dripping off my upper lip.
“Hmm… Want-a take a walk? Just me an’ you?”
“Yea. I’d like that.” I said looking up at the side of his face. Then we walked down the dirt road to a beautiful scenery. Wonderful, green trees surrounding a sweet country lane. The trees were swayed some, forming a heart. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
“Wow,” I said amazed, “It’s so beautiful.” Jesse looked down at me.
“Yea. Like you.” He said still looking down at me. He leaned closer and kissed me on the cheek-this time closer to the lips, but not a direct hit.
“You missed.” I said and I put his head in my hands and kissed him on the lips.
