                                  Chapter 3

“October 3, 2001:
    Dear Diary,
Mm…Jesse…He is so cute!! I’ve never seen anything better looking than him! Plus, he thinks I’M pretty!! How cool is that? He is so nice and sweet too! Jesse and his family are letting me stay with them until it’s necessary for me to go. His dad, Bobby, is cool. They own a small farm and they told me I could help out for 3 dollars an hour. It might not seem much but working for 6 hours a day is a lot of hard work.
I can’t get his name out of my head, Jesse. I’m sure I’ve heard his name before.”

I look around the small, yet comfortable, room and I’ve never felt more safe. It’s warm, soft, and sweet. It is about dinner time and Jesse and his dad showed me how to work on the farm. I’m kind of tired and can’t wait for supper to be ready. I can smell the sweet taste of mashed potatoes and gravy and the roasted smell of a perfect turkey.
“Jess, Bobby, Sarah! Dinner’s ready!” Jesse’s mom yelled in her humble and gentle voice.  So, we all leave the rooms we were in and go into the kitchen. The food looked marvelous! The turkey was perfectly cooked and everything else looked like they were pictures from a cookbook.
We all sat down at the table and joined hands as we knelt our heads down and closed our eyes to pray.
“Jess, please do us the honors of praying over this wonderful feast.”
“Oh yes, ma’am.” Jesse accepted cheerfully, “Lord, we all thank you for this wonderful meal. Thank you for giving us good health, a successful farm and life. Mostly we thank you for guarding our home and letting us live happily, ”He opened his eyes a little bit and glanced at me, “And thank you for bringing the ever-so-kind and pretty, Sarah, into our lives. In Your name, we pray, amen.”
“Amen.” We all repeated. Then we picked up our knives and forks and started eating.
“That was a very nice prayer, Jess.” Gayle, Jesse’s mom, praised with her warm smile. Jesse had his mouth crammed with mashed potatoes, but swallowed them quickly and I giggled.
“Thank you. It might not have been so great if Sarah wasn’t around.” My cheeks went that shade of pink again and he glanced over at me and smiled that pearly, gentle smile of his. I look back at him and smile my cheeks still pink. We made eye contact for but not a second, then I continued to eat.
Dinner lasted for about an hour. Throughout the whole time, the whole family, plus me, were smiling and laughing and chatting. I think I could get used to this place. Everyone’s just so laid-back and sweet and…country.
By the time we all got up from the table and the dishes were cleaned, it had become 8 o’clock. Since we wake up at 5:40, we all head for bed. I was walking down the hall from the bathroom, where I changed into pajamas, to the guest room, when Jesse walked up behind me and lightly touched my shoulder, trying not to frighten me.
“Sarah?” He asked. I turned around.
     “Yea?”
“Do you like it here? With me and my family?”
“Yea, I feel so comfortable here; everyone is so kind and caring. Why do you ask?” He shrugged his shoulders.
“I was just wondering. It’s nice to know you like it here. Well, if you have any questions or want to know something while I’m in my room,” he pointed to the room on his left, “Don’t worry ‘bout knocking. Just come in and shake my shoulder to wake me up. That’s if I’m sleeping. Don’t come in while I’m awake and jerk my shoulders yelling’ ‘Jesse! Wake up!!’” We laughed.
“Okay, I don’t think I have any questions right now. But I guess we should get to sleep now, right?” He smiled down then back up in my eyes.
“Clever girl, you are. I like you already.” I blushed and made a cute, teasing face.
“Why, thank you. I like you too.” Suddenly, Jesse leaned in and kissed me on the cheek-closer to the ear than the lips. When he leaned back, they both smiled.
     “Good night.” I said.
“Sweet dreams.” He winked. We went into our separate rooms. I collapsed on the bed.
     “I’m gonna LOVE this place!
