Crystal's Dread

Crystal's Dread

Tragedy Created on 3-6-08 Views(113) Story Rating G

This is a dedication/story about my best friend Crystal. My heart is always with her. There is a not a single lie in here.

Crystal...my best friend and one of the most generous people you could meet. She lived a short life yet it was more painful than what most adults go through nowadays. She never deserved all the things that had happened to her.

Crystal wasn't your average little kid.She had a dull appearance but once you saw that tiny spark in her eye it completely shattered your thoughts of her.She was very nice, giving, sweet and so much more.

I had just transferred to the school, and was alone and petrified.I had no friends what so ever and often at recess I sat alone against the wall day dreaming. That was of course, until I met Crystal. She had noticed me watching her play jump rope and waved.I just sheepishly smiled back. When her turn was over, she walked over to me and gave me a hearty hello. All I did was simply stare as though I was thinking,"Is she talking to me?"Eventually I said hi back to her,and she got a little friendly conversation going.Except that little conversation had started the best friendship I'd ever had and am going to have.We were so alike in every way it seemed as though she was the sister destiny forgot to give me.

After that conversation,we were stuck to each other like glue.We were always around one another and never went a full 24 hours without talking to each other. As the months went by,our friendship was getting stronger.Until finally...Crystal felt she could trust me with a very personal secret...

Crystal had never met her mother and her dad had not wanted anything to do with her in the first place. He wanted nothing to do with children period but he had 2 daughters anyways. Therefore,he treated Crystal and her 14 year old sister,Amy,like they were wretches.According to what I was told, they were never allowed to call him father,dad....ect,unless of course, they were in front of other people. If they were over to step one tiny place out of line, they were brutally punished.Amy was often beaten in her attempts to try and save Crystal.

Despite all the she was going through,we still managed to have fun with each other, including Amy.Amy was like some kind of goddess to me and Crystal. She was beautiful in our eyes, with the attitude to match it.She was very athletic and had an IQ of 122 if I remember correctly. On top of that she had a sense of humor to boot.It was fun during those times...Amy would put on her little plays for Crystal and I...we would all go back riding (well Amy would ride her skateboard). It was pretty good in spite of the circumstances they were living with. That was of course...until that horrid day.

It seemed like a regular school day,I was sitting outside of the school waiting for Crystal to show up so we could go get breakfast. But when I saw her,she wasn't wearing her usual happy grin.Instead it was the exact opposite. She was sobbing harder than any baby, kid,or adult I've seen. When she told me why she was crying...I couldn't believe it.Her older sister had been shot.It was unbearable.I couldn't do anything other than try to soothe her.

Her life only got worse without Amy in her life...Amy was the one who mostly protected her from their abusive father. Now that she was gone...Crystal was merely her father's slave and victim.

It was pretty rough most of the year.Crystal never did smile quite the same, but she recovered, mostly.About 2 years after, our friendship was as strong as it could ever get.And things seemed like they were going to get better for Crystal.

Crystal had a grandma who thought she was an angel and Crystal's father had agreed to let her take Crystal.Crystal was so excited she could hardly wait. But things only got worse...The plane that Crystal's grandma was coming to get her on crashed.

Crystal was in total shock and depression. So was I.And yet again me and her endured another rough year.

About a year after, things really seemed like they were going to get better.Crystal had finally gotten proof of her father beating her to court. She was then given to one of her mom's oldest and most trusted friends.

And things weren't so bad for a while. The friend of her mom's had a 17 year old daughter named Leelah.Me and Crystal grew to love her in a heartbeat. It was really nice to get to see Crystal more often after school and she smiled her truly happy smile for the first time in years.But...things could not stay perfect forever.

Dread decided it was my turn at torture. On the date January 2nd,2007,my baby sister was diagnosed with a rare blood disease called Duncan's Disease.I was completely crushed.I had no idea what to do...but Crystal was there to help me and supported me through it the same way I did for her.

But dread had one final score to settle with Crystal...About half a year later,Crystal and Leelah were on their way to the mall.Leelah was just driving when all of a sudden it happened. They were hit by a drunk driver. Both were immediately rushed to the emergency room. They were both stuck in the hospital for at least a month and I was there for them for more than half the time.But...only one of them made it out.Leelah had suffered internal bleeding in her liver and died..

Crystal couldn't take anymore death in her life.About 3 days after she had gotten out of the hospital...She got a knife and cut herself from the shoulders down to her wrists. She was dead by morning.

I wasn't able to be there for Crystal when she needed me most.I regret that far more than any other thing I've done in my life. All this says to me is,NEVER take true friendships for granted.Always be there for your friends and they'll be there for you. Thanks for taking the time to read this...
