Out at dark in New York...
Sophie held Furt's and Charlie's leashes tight in her hands, as if if she let them go they would leave her forever too.
Jake looked down at his feet, walking, each step another movement he wouldn't regret. "How...when did you notice she wasn't breathing?" Jake asked.
Sophie was silent for a long time. "I never did notice she wasn't breathing. I just got this feeling like everything was gonna be okay, then when you shook her and she didn't move...I felt like that feeling had been ripped from my whole being."
Jake nodded. "Oh."
The rest of the walk was silent, except for when they reached the park and let all the dogs roam free.
Sophie wiped the little tears that rolled down her face until no more came. "Oh my god."
Jake whipped around, as he was facing the opposite direction. "What?" He said frantically.
Sophie started to panic, then she looked at Jake. "We still have to tell Brigette's mom. And everyone else." Jake gasped and nodded. "I...I don't think we should stay in New York much longer. I don't think we should stay after what happened." Sophie searched for her cell phone and pulled it out and went down the list of contacts.
Jake worried. What was Sophie doing? Was she nuts?
Sophie pressed 'Call' and sat down on a bench.
"Hello?" Brigette's mom said from Chicago.
Sophie started crying the second she heard her vioce. After she recovered Brigette's mom was worried.
"Brigette? What's wrong? Is everything ok?" She didn't seem too worried...yet.
Sophie sucked in a weepy breathe. "Um...I don't know how to say this but..."
Brigette's mom sighed. "Just give me the whole story."
Sophie nodded. "Oh..Ok. We were at the beach when this huge wave came and me and Brigette were way out in the water."
"Uh huh."
"And we started swimming back. Well, we got caught underwater and after I got back up, we found Sophie floating."
"Oh no!"
"Wait! She was unconcious but still alive. Me and Jake pulled her up to our stuff and let her rest for about 20 minutes. We finally tried waking her up...but she wasn't breathing. And..."
"Oh god. Is she?"
"No. She's not in the hospital. She's...she's dead." Sophie started screaming with pain, tears running down her face. She could barely hear Brigette's mom screaming crying on the other line.
Soon the line went dead, Brigette's mom had hung up. Sophie did the same and Jake gathered the dogs and they headed back for the hotel...
This was the long one, the rest will be short. Every ten entries I'll do a long one. In An Instant is gonna be very long.
