The game was all anyone ever talked about the next day. Everyone was so excited and said that was the best soccer game that they had ever seen. The excitement trickled over into the next week as there was nothing else exciting going on. It looked like the soccer team would be on the course to the championship game for the first time in five years.

Every year we came close, but missed it by one game. This was our year, and our game to lose. But since I was the captain, that wasn’t going to happen if I had anything to say about it.

It was now the Friday before Homecoming. The day that everyone dreads, but in a way they welcome it. It was nomination day. There would be a guy and girl nominated from the freshman, sophomore and junior classes. From the senior class, four girls and four guys would be nominated. The final voting for King and Queen would take place next Thursday.

We were sent to our home rooms this morning to vote. Many people are like “I’m going to nominate you and Adam. Good luck!” It made me smile, that I was recognized enough to be nominated. I guess being the team captain of a winning soccer team does that for you. It helps that I am a very friendly person and talk to many people, including the underclassmen.

What sucks was that even though we were voting early in the morning, we wouldn’t know who was nominated until at the very end of the day. So all of the popular girls were biting their nails to see which of them would get the most coveted prize in High School. To be on the Homecoming Court meant that you were actually a somebody.

For the past three years, the girl in my grade that was on the court was the same person. It was Courtney Wilson. Blonde hair, blues eyes and cheerleading captain. Your typical bombshell that all the guys drool over.

Courtney had been giving me glares all day. She heard that a lot of people were nominating me, and with being the captain, I think she felt threatened that she wasn’t going to win the crown. It serves her right for being a bitch. She was never mean to me, but I’ve heard stories about her from those who have felt her wrath. And because of those stories, I have learned to keep my distance from her, and not get involved in anything she does.

At lunch time, the whole table was jittery. Adam and I were sitting in the middle section of the table, so that way we could hear all the conversations. Lennie was across from me, and John was across from Adam.

“Isn’t it exciting? You’re going to be on the Homecoming court,” Lennie said while patting my hand.

“I guess so. I didn’t vote for myself. I voted for you Lennie. So maybe you’ll get on the court too. There are a total of 4 spots for the girls,” I said pointing to her.

“That would be so sweet if we were on court together. But then it would be awkward. I would have to dance with a guy,” she said. After a second, she burst out laughing. “Well, I guess that it wouldn’t be so bad. As long as they don’t try to do anything.”

“That’s the spirit. Now wouldn’t it be cool if we got Queen and Princess? That would blow Courtney’s lid,” I said deviously.

“That would be so epic,” she said as her eyes widened. “It would serve her right for being a stupid prep. Everyone knows that her boobs are fake anyhow,” Lennie whispered to me.

“Dude, you just ruined my daydreams about Courtney,” Adam pouted.

“That’s mean,” I said slapping him on the arm. “Why are you daydreaming about Courtney when you have me?” I said pouting.

“Just calm down Dev, I was joking. Courtney is too fake. I prefer girls that have a lot of heart, they’re kind, and beautiful. I would never trade you in for her,” he said as he placed a kiss on my forehead. The table erupted into a chorus of “Awws,” at Adam’s show of affection. The table suddenly became quiet as Courtney herself approached the table.

“Devon,” she said giving me an icy glare.

“Courtney,” I said while standing up and returning the glare. “Is there anything I can help you with?”

“Come talk with me,” she said as she started walking away from the table.

With a shrug, I left the table and followed her. We walked to a spot where there were no tables around so we could talk in privacy.

“So I heard that you’re most likely going to make Homecoming Court. Congrats,” she said as she cocked her head.

“Thanks, I guess,” I said crossing my arms.

“Enough of the niceness. I have been on the court for the past three years, which has been leading up to me winning the crown. I’m not going to let some wannabe soccer captain take my prize from me, understand?”

“Courtney, it’s not my fault that people like me. Let’s face the facts: I’m a very friendly and nice person, and you’re, not so nice,” I said trying to put it lightly.

“You don’t actually think that you can win, do you?” she asked seriously.

“I actually do think that I can win. I may not be as pretty or popular as you, but I’ve got my ways. We’ll find out next Friday who takes it all,” I said getting in her face.

“It’s such a shame Devon,” she said shaking her head. “You’re such a nice person. It’s going to be sad when I take you down. I hope that this doesn’t ruin our friendship.”

“We were never friends Courtney. I’d say that we tolerate each other, and the only reason that we can tolerate each other is the fact that I know to stay away when it concerns you, and you know that if you do me wrong, I have people who would be on you in a heartbeat,” I said staring her down.

I was a couple inches taller than her, so she backed down a little bit. “Trust me Devon, you do not want to go against me,” she growled. “Have a nice day.”

“Wait one moment. Do you know anything about a dead cat?” I asked as I stopped her from leaving, not ruling out that it could have been her.

“I heard about that. Simply disgusting. Was that your locker it was in? Gross,” she said shivering and sticking out her tongue.

“How did you find out about the cat?” I asked.

“Come on Devon. I hear everything. You don’t think that I could have done it, do you? That is so not my style. If I were to take you down, I wouldn’t put a dead cat in your locker. I would publicly humiliate you and so on. Whatever,” she said storming off.

I watched her go before I trudged back to my table. Courtney had no reason to hate me, until this homecoming thing. So I guess that I can rule her out. She seemed genuinely surprised that I was accusing her, and she was right when she said that the dead cat wasn’t her style. The dead cat is more like a psycho person.

Right after I sat back down, I was embraced in a super tight hug by Adam.

“Yay! The Queen bee didn’t hurt you!” Lennie exclaimed as she wiped away an imaginary drop of sweat from her forehead. “What did she want anyways?” she asked glancing over at Courtney’s table.

“What else?” I asked sarcastically. “She talked about Homecoming, and how the crown was going to be hers, and blah blah blah. Let me quote ‘You don’t actually think that you can win, do you?’” I mocked in Courtney’s voice. The table burst out into hysterics.

“She did not say that!” Lennie said in between laughs.

“She so did!” I said joining in on the laughter. “And what’s even funnier is she thought that we were friends!” I hooted.

“That is funny,” Layla piped up from next to me.

“When you get nominated, we have to do everything to see that you win. I want to see her face when she loses,” Lennie said with an evil grin.

“That’s if I get nominated,” I corrected her, but couldn’t keep the smile off of my face.

“You are so getting nominated. Everyone was so excited, talking about how they were going to nominate you and Adam,” Layla said as she nudged me.

“And you know that Courtney got her cronies to nominate her,” I said in thought. “That means that there are two possible openings to get on court. Lennie, I nominated you, and I bugged Adam to nominate you too. It would be sweetness if we got on court together, and then ran for Queen and Princess so she wouldn’t get either crown.”

“I like the way you think lady,” Lennie said while rubbing her hands together. “This will officially be the best homecoming ever. We just need to find out the lucky boys and girls who are going to be on court. I usually hate this day because I never get nominated. But now I’m actually looking forward to it,” she stated.

“Me too,” I said with a grin. We dropped the subject for now to concentrate on other things besides Homecoming.

The day seemed to drag by so slowly after lunch. I would end up checking my watch every five or so minutes. But that just drove me even more so insane. When I would walk through the hallways, random people would smile at me, give me a thumbs up sign, or give me high-fives when I passed them.

Some of the people were in classes I knew. I felt bad that I didn’t know all of the people, and yet they were being so nice to me. It was heart-warming really that these people were on my side and not Courtney’s. I felt sort of like the underdog’s hero. Now I just have to be able to use that to help Lennie and I get the crowns. I’m sure that they all hate Courtney enough and that they would do anything to make sure that she doesn’t win.

Finally, it was the last period of the day. For me and the whole school, it couldn’t have come quick enough. I was so jittery that a few of my earlier teachers stopped their lectures to ask if I were ok. How embarrassing is that?

But I was behind the desk, once again checking in the books in the Library when Justin came up to me.

“Hey Dev. I hope that you get on court. That would just be great. I’m really rooting for you,” he said while leaning over the desk.

“Why thank you Justin,” I said stopping what I was doing. “Did you by any chance nominate me?” I asked sweetly.

“Um, no,” he said while rubbing the back of his head. “I heard a lot of people were going to vote for you, so I went with someone else. I nominated Lennie. I hope that you’re not too mad about that.”

“Are you serious? That is awesome! I nominated Lennie too! I’m hoping that Lennie gets on court that way one of us gets Queen, the other gets Princess, and Courtney gets absolutely nothing,” I said while grinning evilly.

“Glad that I could help,” he said flashing me his smile. Funny how a couple weeks ago my knees would have gone weak if he gave me that smile. It does absolutely nothing for me now, except maybe smile. “So how are things looking for homecoming? I see that you and Adam are still going strong.”

“That we are,” I grinned as I went back to checking in the books.

“Are you two still going to break up after homecoming?” he asked hopefully.

“That is not up for discussion right now. We may, me might not. Adam and I haven’t really talked about it, so if we do, we do. If we don’t, we don’t. We’re really happy together, so who knows what will happen,” I said shrugging.

“You two are good together. But I still want a chance with you. I’ll talk to you later Dev,” he said giving me a wink and walked away.

That was very awkward and uncomfortable. I had just about forgotten that Adam and I were going to stop our little lie after Homecoming. It made me sad to think about not being considered Adam’s girlfriend anymore. We really need to talk about what we were going to do after homecoming.

When there were about ten minutes left at the end of the day, the school secretary finally came over the PA system.

“There is one announcement before everyone leaves to go home today. Your homecoming court will consist of the following people. The freshman class representatives are Katilyn Romas and Jeffrey Munn. The sophomore class representatives are Amy Weiss and Joshua Roberts. The Junior class representatives will be Rebecca Avery and Harry Turner.”

The only names that I recognized from that were Amy and Rebecca because Amy was on the JV soccer team, and Rebecca was basically Courtney’s clone, but a year younger. I heard murmurs going around the library about the results thus far.

“And now, the next names will be read off in alphabetical order. Your nominees for Homecoming Queen will be Devon Bates, Lennie Ross, Amanda Schubert and Courtney Wilson.”

A cheer went up through the library, followed by “Way to go Devon!” and “Good luck! I hope you beat Courtney!” I smiled and waved, accepting the acknowledgments.

“Your nominees for Homecoming King will be Adam Bauer, Mike Hardy, Justin Marzak, and Christopher Ronyak. Remember that the final voting will take place next Friday morning. The final results of king, queen, prince and princess and will be revealed at halftime at next Fridays’ game. Congratulations to all and have a nice weekend!”

I caught Justin’s glance and he gave me a wink. I just waved and turned away, waiting for the bell to ring. After it did, I rushed out to hurry and go to my locker. But I couldn’t really reach it when I got there, for there was a crowd of people standing in front of it.

“Way to go girlie!” Layla said as she gave me a hug.

“Thanks. How about tomorrow we have a girls day out? You me and Lennie so we can catch up and go Homecoming dress shopping?” I asked as I made my way to my locker.

“Sounds fun. It’ll be a date,” Layla said excitedly as I opened my locker.

“Date? Where?” Adam said as he came up behind me.

“Sorry Adam, it’s for girls only. I haven’t had a girl’s day out in forever. I hope you understand,” I said giving him puppy dog eyes.

“It’s perfectly fine. Just don’t pick up any guys while you’re out,” he said winking.

“I wouldn’t dream of it,” I said giving him a hug. “Why would I pick up a new guy when I already have the perfect boyfriend?”

“You two are making me sick,” Lennie said as she approached. “What is all this about a girl’s day out? I’m coming, right?”

“Of course you are. I wouldn’t have it any other way. This homecoming is going to be a night to remember.”

I would have posted this sooner, but I wanted to finish up with chapter 15 before I posted this. They will now be coming out a little slower. Instead of every other day, there will be like 2 days in between every new posting of the chapters, giving me enough time so I won't have to rush through them.

To those of you who want them to admit they like each other already: NO it just ruins the whole plot and what I have planned. I have it set out, so you are going to have to wait a few more chapters for the feelings part to come out.

It's actually funny... because this weekend is my old high school's Homecoming, haha. check otu my sweet Halloween page! :D
