Romance Created on 10-7-08 Views(394) Story Rating PG

The ride home was kind of blurry. All I remember was Adam going on and on about   how excited he was about the game. I just sat there, smiling and occasionally saying something when he asked a question. Next thing I knew we were pulling up in his driveway.

Opening the door, I stepped out of the car. I turned to face him as he got out of the car and started backing up towards my house. “I guess that I’ll see you later then.”

“Hey, do you want a ride up to the school later?” he asked leaning over his car.

“That would be nice, but since we need to be up there at 5:30, what would you do for an hour until the game starts?” I asked stopping in my tracks.

“I’ll just call some people and we’ll have a little tail gate beforehand. So, what do you say?” he asked giving me that damn grin that was in that one dream.

“Fine. But just don’t blame me if you get bored. So we’ll meet out here at 5-tenish. See you later Adam,” I said with a wave as I turned around and went towards the house. Behind me, I heard Adam already on the phone with one of his buddies.

Shaking my head I walked into the house and up the stairs to my room. I finished my paper that was due tomorrow, and printed it off. With all my homework done, I went downstairs and made myself some macaroni and cheese. After eating, I went up and changed into my game gear, and then went and sat into the living room until it was time to leave.

Sadly, I did not have enough time to take a nap today before the game like I usually do, because I spent most of the time on my paper. But I can do without one.

With a glance at my watch, it said it was now 5:12, so I grabbed my gear bag and headed outside and went over towards Adam’s car. It was locked, so I just leaned up against the the passenger side waiting for him to come out.

He was talking on the phone when he came out. I gave him a quick look over, only now taking time to fully appreciate how good looking he was. He was wearing light faded jeans, and one of those Pacific Coast sweaters that were so comfortable. His dad is a lawyer, so he is able to afford clothes like that.

“I’ll see you in a few Kenny. Talk to you later,” he said hanging up the phone. “So, are you ready for the big game?” he asked while unlocking the car.

“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be, I guess. Besides, I’m not as nervous about the game as I am about talking to the OSU soccer coach,” I said as I put my gear in the back seat.

“That’s right, the big talk. Don’t worry, they’ll love you,” he said walking around the car to stand by me, and ten held onto my shoulders. “You are an exceptional soccer player, and they would be crazy not to offer you a chance to play for them. Just do your best.”

“Thanks Adam,” I said smiling at him. “I think we should get going, that way Coach Martin won’t yell at me for being late.”

“Coach Martin would never yell at you for being late. You’re basically the best on the team, so just as long as you’re there she’ll be happy,” he said as he walked around and got into the car.

I just shook my head and got into the car. I was basically jumping up and down in my seat from the jitters. Also, some of it was left over energy from the pep rally earlier. Adam just laughed at me shaking in my seat, but a full grin on my face. We rode in comfortable silence except for the songs playing on the radio. Like I said, I don’t think that there has ever been an awkward silence between Adam and me.

Upon pulling into the school parking lot, I saw my group of friends there, along with many other students who had the same idea to tail gate before the game. As I stepped out of the car, I was greeted by hollers and whistles and other forms of cheers.

“Looks like you guys aren’t the only ones tail gaiting,” I said to Adam as we walked over to the group.

            “It seems so,” he chuckled.

“Devon!” I heard someone call my name. Looking, I saw Layla jumping up and down holding a sign. Grinning, I ran over to her and gave her a hug.

“I’m so excited for this! You guys are gonna kick ass! I just know it!” Layla said hugging me back.

“Thanks for your confidence. We’re going to need it. I’ve got to get going to the locker room,” I said giving her one last hug before I left.

“Hey Dev,” I heard Adam calling me. Looking over, I saw him striding over towards me.

            “Hey what?” I said grinning.

“Good luck out there,” he said as he looked into my eyes. With that, he pulled me close and kissed me. I was about to pull him closer to deepen it when I realized that we were in the school parking lot, and there were people watching us.

“I’ll see you after the game,” I said pulling away. As I walked towards the school, I heard catcalls as I passed by some of my schoolmates. When I got to thinking about it, I started to get mad at Adam. It seems like he only kisses me to show off for his buddies. It hurt, as I like him a lot, and it’s just not fair to be played like that.

I walked into the locker room and just plopped down on the bench. As I was putting my cleats on, Lennie sat down next to me.

“What do you think of all the people out there?” she said excitedly.

            “It’s freakin’ awesome,” I said as I gave her a high-five.

“Bates, when you’re done getting ready, could you please come to my office,” Coach Martin said as she entered into the locker room.

“Yes Coach Martin,” I said as she passed by me.

Lennie gave me a scared look, but I patted her knee to reassure her. “I think that it could be about the OSU thing,” I whispered to her. No one else in the locker room knew that I would be offered a scholarship there, and I didn’t want to tell anyone else in case it didn’t work out.

“You’ll be fine,” she whispered to me as she saw the nervous look on my face. With a hug from her, I went to Coach Martin’s office. I knocked on the door, and heard a “Come in,” so I slowly opened the door.

“So this is the infamous Devon Bates. The guard who is the most feared in all of high-school girls soccer,” said the man who was sitting behind coach’s desk.

“Yes I am sir. It’s nice to meet you,” I said as I extended my hand to shake his.

“Nice handshake,” he complimented me. “I like you already. Could you please let us talk in private Judy?”

Coach Martin nodded her head and quietly left the room, leaving him and me.

“I assume that you know why I’m here,” he stared. With a nod from me, he continued. “I am the head coach of the OSU’s women’s soccer team. I am here to offer you a full ride scholarship to come play for us. But before you give an answer, I want to say a few things.” He leaned forward while folding his hands on the desk. “Since you will be a freshman, you will not be a starter. I can’t guarantee playing time, but if you work hard, you might get to see some time on the field.”

“I saw your game last week when I first came to speak with your coach. I was impressed by what I saw out there. The outcome of today’s game will have no effect on what I think of you, and the offer will still stand. You’ve got a certain fierceness about you, accompanied with leadership and heart. To me, that makes one hell of a player. I would be honored if you would accept the scholarship and become a proud Buckeye.”

A wide grin broke out onto my face. “I gladly accept your offer. I would be proud to wear scarlet and grey. I’ve talked it over with my parents and they are behind me 100%. I promise that I’ll make you proud.”

“I’m sure that you will. Good luck in your match tonight. I understand that this team is your biggest rival,” he said as we shook hands. “You’re dismissed.”

After I walked out of the office and shut the door, I started jumping up and down. In a burst of excitement, I ran over to Lennie and glomped her. “I got the offer!” I said in a high pitched squeal.

“That’s so great! To celebrate, we’re gonna go out and kick Tiger ass!” she exclaimed.

“Let’s do it!” I yelled. The other people in the locker room just looked at me like I was crazy. “I’m pumped! You guys should be pumped too! We’re going to go out there and crush them!” I half yelled. I started jumping and down, joined by Lennie. Soon after, the whole locker room was jumping up and down.

“I’m loving the energy here ladies,” Coach said as she walked in. “Just remember to save some of it for the game. Ok, let’s get out there and warm up.”

With a clap of her hands, we all made our way out of the locker room. I gave coach a wink as I passed her, giving her the signal that all went well with the offer.

As we jogged out onto the field, there were quite a few people already in the stands, and we received a loud cheer from them. After we were on the field and finished our warm-ups, we went and sat down on the bench for a talk with coach.

“Ok ladies. Whatever you do out there tonight, I just want you to know that I’ll be proud of you. This is the biggest game of the year. If you win tonight, there’s nothing that can stop you from going to the championship game. On three, Lady Hawks. One two three, Lady Hawks!” we all cheered and we went onto the field.

Our seniors met up with their seniors. Standing opposite of me was Misty Harrins. She was a good of mine, but we lost touch when she moved to Trenton. So, we didn’t talk much since she was now playing for a rival school.

“Misty,” I said tersely as I shook her hand.

“Devon,” she said stiffly. “You guys are going down, because you suck,” she whispered in my ear.

“If we suck, then how come I was offered a full-ride scholarship to OSU?” I taunted and pulled away from her.

She gave me a look of disbelief as I grinned back at her. Taking my starting position, I waited for the ref to blow the whistle. When the whistle blew, I was off. I plowed down anyone who got in my way. This was my game to prove myself, and no one was going to stop me.

I was going on an adrenaline rush that I’ve had all day. Some of my teammates must have felt my energy, because suddenly they were playing more aggressively. After we scored the first goal of the game, it just escalated from there. When it was halftime, we were up 3-0.

“That’s the way it should be done,” Coach said proudly while we were in the locker room. “Just keep up the intensity, and the game is in the bag. Bates, I’m very proud that you haven’t caused a penalty in the first half.” I just blushed, because in every game I have at least two penalties against me in the first half. “Do what you need to do, for in five minutes we’re going to head back out and stretch,” she said as she went into her office.

“That’s what I’m talking about!” I yelled into the locker room. In response, the whole locker room started banging on their lockers and shouting various things. “If we keep this up, we’ll be unstoppable. I love you guys so much! I just wanted to say thanks, because if it wasn’t for you guys, I wouldn’t have gotten a full-ride scholarship to OSU.”

Many of the juniors came over and gave me a congratulatory hug, while jumping up and down in the process. “Thanks you guys. Now let’s go out there and win!”

When the second half started, it was like the other team had taken a big energy booster. They were knocking us down left and right. Luckily, some of the hits were hard enough to draw fouls, so we got a few penalty kicks. We made two of them so going into the final 5 minutes of the game, the score was 5-4, us in the lead. As the minutes wore down, coach took a time out.

“You girls are playing your hearts out. You just need to hold them off for a few minutes more. Even scoring another goal would put them away. I know that you can do it. Now get out there and do it!”

We ran back onto the field, our bodies beginning to show signs of how worn out and beat up we were. The whistle sounded, signaling the end of time out. We played our hearts out, down to the last seconds of the game. There were only 30 seconds left on the clock, and the other team had possession of the ball. If they were to score, we would tie and have to go into overtime, something that I was not looking forward to.

As the seconds were ticking down, they passed it back and forth from one person to another. When there were only ten seconds left, the person who had the ball set up to kick it at the goal. I really hoped that Marissa would be able to block it.

As the person swung her leg back to gain momentum for the kick, I saw Lennie charging at her. But she was too late for the ball already was in the air. As the ball was sailing towards the goal, it looked like it was going to go right over Marissa’s head. But it didn’t get high enough, and Marissa was able to jump up and knock it away from the goal. The seconds ticked down as she took the ball and threw it out in the field. Soon as the ball hit the ground, the whistles blew signaling that the game was over.

Suddenly, the whole team was swarming around Marissa.

“That was one hell of a save Marissa,” I shouted over the other voices.

Soon, we were flocked by the whole crowd from our school, congratulating us on the spectacular win. Lennie and I were exchanging high-fives when Layla came up to us.

“That was an awesome game,” she said as she enveloped both of us in a hug.

“Wasn’t it?” Lennie said as she cocked her head.

I was hugged from behind as a head rested on my shoulders. “Great game, wasn’t it?” I heard Adam’s voice say right next to my ear.

‘That it was,” I said turning around to give him a hug. “We can celebrate later. Right now, I just want to get into the locker room and change out of this uniform. We’ll see you in a bit guys. Come on Lennie,” I said as I pulled her along with me.

After a quick rinse-off in the showers, and talking with some of the other team members, Lennie and I made our way out into the school parking lot. There were still quite a few people milling around, talking about how great the game was. My legs were so sore that my feet were dragging as we reached Adam’s car.

“I’m so tired that I’ll probably collapse when I get home,” I said as I stuffed my gear into the back of Adam’s car.

“I second that,” Lennie said leaning against his car. “I’d love to stay here and talk with you guys, but I’m beat, so I’m gonna go. I’ll catch you guys tomorrow,” she waved as she slugged away to her car.

With a wave to Lennie, I went and stood by Adam. He was sitting on the roof of his car, so he pulled me back against him and wrapped his arms around me. The people that were left stayed there for I don’t know how long, because I wasn’t really paying attention. I was basically falling asleep standing up.

I was being moved while Adam said, “Hey guys, I’m gonna get going before Devon here is completely asleep. See you guys tomorrow,” he said as he guided me into the passenger seat.

Soon enough, we were pulling up into Adam’s driveway. After parking the car and shutting it off, he came around and got my stuff out of the back seat and then got me out of the front seat and walked me up the porch. Setting my bags down, he pulled me in for a hug.

“I’m sorry that you have to help me. It’s just that I’m so bloody tired,” I mumbled.

“Dev, it’s cool. This is what best friends are for. Just be sure to get plenty of sleep, okay?” he asked looking into my eyes.

“Will do,” I said giving him a lazy grin.

“Good. Good night Devon,” he said as he placed a tender kiss on my forehead and then turned and walked down the porch steps.

I watched him go. With a sigh, I opened the door and kicked my bag in the door. After a quick hugs from my parents, I went upstairs, changed into my pj’s and then went to bed. I fell asleep with thoughts of Adam and me in my head.

On word, this was like 4 1/2 or so pages. This one took quite a while to write, so I hope that you enjoy it :D I'm so bored and tired, and yeah... so not much of a rant here today
