I sat down on the love seat, with Adam sitting to my right. I just sat there twiddling my thumbs and looking down at my feet until Dad joined us.

“So, why are we all gathered here? You’re not pregnant are you?” he asked me while narrowing his eyes at Adam. I told you that I’m daddy’s girl.

“No Dad. What I am going to tell you has nothing to do with Adam. He is only here because he knows about the situation and is here to support me. The thing is,” I paused to gather my wits about me before I continued.

“This morning when I checked my email, I found a message in there. It turned out to be a death threat. But that’s not all. I received a text message from who I believe was the same person, and then when I went into the locker room, there was a dead cat carcass hanging from one of the hooks in my locker,” I said, my voice trembling. Adam reached over to grab my hand, and gave it a slight squeeze.

“My poor baby! She’s been receiving death threats! What are we going to do?” my mom squabbled as she looked over at my dad.

Dad had a look of deep concentration on his face, but once in a while I saw a look of fear make its way as he sat there thinking. “I believe that we have no choice but to call the police about this.”

My mom sat on the couch in hysterics, as Adam wrapped a protective arm around me and my dad made the phone call to the police. I could understand mom being a bit hysterical, but I think that she was really over doing it. She would sob, and then stop and rock back and forth. It was like she was the one getting the death threats, not me.

Dad put the phone down and sat back down on the couch with a grim face. “The police are sending some of their men over to check it out. They’ll be over within the hour.”

“Looks like we won’t be having that nice dinner,” mom said, trying to be positive. She still sat rocking back and forth in her seat on the couch.

“Devon, I’m surprised that you went to school today. Why didn’t you stay home from school and call us?” Dad asked concerned.

“If I stayed at home, I would just be letting whoever did this win. I wanted to show them that I’m not afraid. Besides, I didn’t know how serious this was until later on when I kept receiving them,” I said. “Coach Martin knows about this, and she was going to tell the rest of the staff about it. So, tomorrow when I go, I’ll have the teachers there for me too.”

Dad just nodded his head thoughtfully and stood up. “Sounds good. Well, I’m going to grab something to eat before the fuzz show up.”

He then walked into the kitchen. With a glance at Adam, I followed my dad into the kitchen, with Adam on my heels. “I wonder when mom is going to snap out of her hysterics,” I said upon entering the kitchen.

“She’ll probably snap out of it when the police arrive. But for now, its best just to leave her be. Adam, you’re free to grab something to eat. You’re basically like family here,” Dad said giving him a pat on the shoulder.

“Um, thanks Mr. Bates,” Adam said while rubbing the back of his head.

“You are watching out for her at school while this is going on, aren’t you?” Dad asked, raising his eyebrow at him.

“Of course I am. I would never let anything happen to Devon. She means everything to me,” Adam said as he wrapped and arm around me and gave me a tight squeeze.

“Good. I wouldn’t want anything to happen to my little girl,” Dad said giving Adam and approving nod. I blushed, slightly embarrassed. “I’m going to go back in there to see if your mom has snapped out of it yet and wants anything.” Dad finished off the sandwich that he had been eating and walked out of the kitchen.

“My dad is so protective, it’s embarrassing. Nice, but embarrassing,” I muttered as I moved to the fridge.

“I think that it’s cool that he’s protective. I would be the same way if I was in his place,” Adam said as he followed me. “If I had a daughter and she was my only child, I would do anything to protect her. Just like how you father is acting, even earlier when he narrowed his eyes at me when he asked the question,” he said laughing.

“I guess that I’m really lucky to have such a protective family,” I said letting out a sigh, as I took the hotdog package out of the fridge.

“You have a lot of protective friends too,” he reminded me.

“I know that. I consider all of my close friends as family, that’s why I didn’t put the friends in there,” I said looking at him.

“I’m included in that, aren’t I?” he asked coming closer to me.

I froze, not knowing what to say to that. Earlier this morning, I would have said yes without hesitation. But now all these feelings were jumbling my thoughts. “Do you want to be included in that list?” I said looking at him.

“Of course I want to be on the list Dev. We’re best friends, and I believe that should be considered family too. Don’t you want me on that list?” he said a little hurt.

            “Of course I do Adam.”

“Then why didn’t you just come out and say so?” he asked, gazing at me suspiciously while leaning on the counter.

“Because,” I said trying to avoid the subject.

“Because why?” Adam asked intently, scooting closer to me.

Because I like you and I don’t know where you would fall!” I wanted to say out loud, but I couldn’t. I didn’t want to make myself look stupid, saying that I like him when he probably doesn’t feel the same way about me. “Because being best friends, I thought that would be a given,” I said looking him in the eyes. It was a total lie, but he didn’t need to know that. It’s crazy how since the other night I’ve been lying like crazy, and all because of him.

“Whatever,” he shrugged as he turned away.

“Whatever? You hound me for an answer, and then you just say whatever? You’re lucky that you’re my best friend mister,” I said growling at him.

“What was I supposed to say then?” he asked coming towards me.

“I don’t know,” I said letting out a frustrated sigh. “You could have said anything, but whatever? It makes it sound as if you don’t care,” I pouted.

“I care for you, more than you’ll ever know,” he said coming so close to me that our faces were inches apart. We just stood there staring into each other’s eyes. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. It wasn’t an “I hate you so much,” tension, but the “I just want to kiss you senseless,” kind of tension.

I was snapped out of my thoughts when the dinger sounded, signaling that the hotdog was done. Immediately I looked away and went to the microwave. “Aren’t you going to get something to eat?” I asked turning to face him.

“I’m not exactly hungry at the moment,” he said turning away.

“But Adam, you need to eat something. If you don’t, you could shrivel up and die,” I exaggerated while taking a bite.

“I won’t shrivel up from missing one meal Dev,” he said pointedly.

“I know, but you still need to eat something,” I said as I shoved the hotdog underneath his nose.

Sighing, Adam took a hold of my wrist and took a bite. After he chewed and swallowed he grunted, “Are you happy now?”

“A bit,” I said as I wiped away ketchup that had gotten on his face. “One bite usually is not enough to sustain someone. But I guess that it’ll have to do for now.”

After finishing off my food, I went back into the living room. Dad was still trying to comfort mom as she now just sat there in shock, instead of rocking back and forth in her seat from hysterics. As I went to sit back down on the couch, a pair of headlights flashed in through the front window.

“It looks like the police are here,” Adam said as he went to the front window.

“Now everyone be on your best behavior,” mom said finally snapping out of it as she got up to go to the door. There was a knock on the front door right as my mom reached the door. She opened the door with a wide smile on her face. “Gentlemen, please come in,” she said while stepping back allowing them to enter.

Police officers scared me. Even though I’ve never done anything wrong and had nothing to be afraid of, I was. The way that they wore those special uniforms, with their badges and pins covering them. And then there was the look. How they looked at you like you were guilty and done something wrong, even if you hadn’t.

“Good evening,” said the first officer as he stepped through the doorway and quickly swept his glance over all of us. “Mr. Bates, I presume?” he said as his gaze landed on my dad.

Dad nodded his head as the officer strode towards him and the other officer entered the house. “I am detective Gathry with the police department, and this is my partner Rhodes. I understand that you have received death threats recently?” he said as he shook his hand.

“Actually, it was my daughter Devon who has received the threats,” my dad said as he nodded in my direction.

Detective Gathry raised his eyebrow as he took a glance at me. “So you are the one who has received the threats,” he asked coming over to me. I gulped and nodded my head, my throat being suddenly too tight to talk. “You’re so young, I don’t know how someone could receive death threats. Would you mind showing me them?” he asked as he placed his hands in front of him and folded them.

With a nod, I stood up to lead them upstairs. I grabbed onto Adam’s hand to drag him up there with me, not wanting to be alone with the officers.

“Wait one moment, who is this?” Detective Gathry asked, stopping Adam from moving.

“This is my boyfriend Adam Bauer. He lives next door,” I said, the words naturally rolling off my tongue.

Detective Gathry just nodded and we continued up the stairs and into my room. Flipping on the switch, I went over to my computer and started it up. As soon as it was working, I went into my email account and opened up the message and let the detectives look at it from there.

“What else was there?” Gathry said while looking at the screen.

“There was a text message, and then there was a dead cat in my locker,” I said while getting out my phone to show them. Opening the message, I held my phone out for them to take a look. Rhodes grabbed the phone and handed it over to Gathry.

“I’m going to need your login information so we can get one of our guys to trace where the email came from. I hope that you won’t need your phone for a while either. In the morning we’ll check out the dead cat to see if it belonged to anyone. I want you to notify us immediately if anything else like this happens,” he said as he handed me his card. “We’ll be in touch,” he said as he left the room with Rhodes on his tail.

“I don’t know whether to be relieved or not,” I said staring out the door where the detectives had just left moments before. I could hear them downstairs talking to my parents about what they would do and so on. “Part of me just wants to breathe out a huge sigh of relief that the detectives are working on it. Another part of me is unsure that anything will actually come of this,” I said while lying down on my back.

“Well, at least something is getting done about it,” Adam said as he joined me on the bed.

“I guess,” I said sitting up. “Hey Adam?”

“Yeah Dev?” he said turning towards me.

“I just wanted to say thanks for being there for me today. I really needed that. I don’t know what I would do without you.” I leaned over and placed a light kiss on his lips. I lingered for a moment before I pulled away. Leaning back against my pillow, I started back on my homework humming to myself.
