I'd Lie ~Chapter 10~Authors Comments: The much awaited chapter 10!! :D
|
After practice, Lennie waited with me in the parking lot for Adam to get done with practice. It was a little after 6:00, and I was getting restless.
“I’m dying to know when the thing between you and Adam happened,” she said while sitting on the hood of her car that she moved so it was parked next to Adam’s.
“Well, one day we were just sitting there, talking, and he just kinda asked me out. I was starting to develop feelings for him, so I just said yes. It’s been working out pretty well so far. We didn’t want to come out with it until we were sure that us together as a couple was okay. But you know how big the mouths are on the cross country team.” I felt really bad lying to her about it, but no one could know the truth. At least not yet anyways.
“I know you’ve probably heard it already, but it was about damn time that you two got together. Everyone saw it coming, I guess except for you. Even though I’m not into guys, I really think that you and Adam are prefect together,” she said wistfully.
“I really don’t think that there is such a thing as a perfect couple,” I said as I rolled my eyes at her.
“But if there were, you two would come pretty close. If I were straight, I would be jealous of you and him. You’ve got to admit that he’s not bad looking,” she said giving me a playful nudge.
“Yeah, he is,” I agreed. I knew that Adam was attractive, but I just never really paid any attention to it like that. I looked at him like best friends do, and that is not going to change, simply because we are pretending to date. “So, found any new candidates to fill the position of girlfriend yet?”
“Nah, not yet,” she said while leaning back on the hood. “I figured that I would explore my new singleness for a while. See what’s out there. After all, Tiffany and I would have been going on a year this November. I just want time to heal, ya know?”
“Totally,” I said, leaning back next to her. Closing my eyes, I just decided to relax until Adam came.
Moments later, I felt the car move and then there was weight on top of me. I opened my eyes to see Adam grinning down at me. “What a nice wake-up call,” I joked.
“I know, wasn’t it?” With that, he leaned down and kissed me. Wolf-whistles were soon heard as the other cross country members made their way to their cars. I put a lot of effort into kissing him back, putting a show on for them. We were interrupted by a loud cough.
“Hey, this is my car. There will be no mackin’ on this car, unless it’s me and my girl, so vamoose,” she said while shooing us off her car.
“You’re no fun Len,” Adam pouted. He got off the car, and pulled me with him.
“My car, my rules,” she said sticking out her tongue. “It’s fine with me if you do that on your car, but just stay off mine.”
“Will do, mon capitain,” Adam said as he gave her a salute.
I picked up my book bag off the ground and went over to Adam’s car. “Thanks for waiting with me Lennie,” I called over to her.
“No problem Dev. After the locker room thing, there was no way that I was going to leave you alone,” she said hopping off her car.
“What happened in the locker room?” Adam questioned.
“There was a dead cat hanging from one of the hooks in my locker,” I said remembering the gross memory. I tried not to puke thinking of it and the smell.
“A dead cat? This really needs to be put to a stop! What should we do about this Dev?” Adam asked leaning over the car.
“Coach Martin knows about it. She said that I should tell my parents about this, and inform the police. This is really serious,” I said shoving my bag into his car.
“Do you want me to be there with you when you tell them?” he asked concerned.
“That would be great,” I said with a smile of relief. “See you later Lennie,” I said as I rushed over to her to give her a hug. I’m a hug person, I love getting hugs from all of my friends.
“See you Dev. If you need anything, I’m just a phone call away. See you later Adam,” she said as she let go and went to hop into her car.
“Later Len,” Adam waved as he got into the car. I walked around to the other side and got into the car. Within seconds, we were pulling out of the parking lot.
“So, what time should I come over?” he asked while stopping at a traffic light.
“Well, why don’t you come over to my house to do your homework? That way you’ll be there when they get home, and I won’t have to call your butt over,” I smirked.
“That sounds good to me,” he laughed.
The rest of the ride home was in silence. I stared out the window, looking at the different houses, and the trees which were already starting to change colors. At one house, there was a little kid, about 3 or 4 years old, playing with his puppy. Scenes like that were welcome to help push out the negative thoughts.
After Adam pulled into his driveway and turned the car off, he turned to me. “I’ll go tell my mom where I’ll be. I’ll most likely be over in a minute or two.”
“That’s fine. You don’t have to knock, just come on in,” I said as I opened the door and got out.
“See you in a bit,” he said as he went up to his house.
I waved at him then retreated over to my house. Shaking my head, I made my way up the front steps. Today was just a weird day. Combine today with yesterday, and it’s just not cool. It was a good thing that tomorrow was Friday, and after that I would have a break from the craziness of school.
Walking into the house, I made my way to the kitchen, grabbed the bag of Sun Chips, and then made my way to the stairs. I was about halfway up when I heard the door open.
“Hey Dev, I’m here,” I heard Adam call out.
“Come on up to my room. We’ll do our work up there,” I said as I finished trudging the way up there with my book bag.
After I slightly kicked my door open, I dropped my bag on the floor and then flopped facedown onto my bed. Adam flipped on the light switch and laughed at me, while setting his book bag down next to mine.
“Tired much?” he asked coming and sitting next to me.
I rolled onto my back and looked at him. “I’m not tired. It’s just that all these things from yesterday and today are getting to me. First, it was all the questioning about us yesterday. And now it’s the death threats. It takes a lot out of a person, ya know?”
“I’d say so. Don’t worry, hopefully all this death threat stuff will be over with soon,” he said patting my knee.
“I wish it would be soon,” I scoffed as I sat up. Reaching over the bed, I grabbed our book bags and pulled them up. I passed Adam’s to him as I started unzipping mine. “Do you want to use my desk?” I offered as I gestured to the desk where my computer was.
“No thanks. Your bed is more comfortable,” he said as he moved so he was sitting cross-legged on my bed.
“Whatever,” I laughed while shaking my head. Reaching into my book bag, I pulled out my French 4 book, and the worksheet that we were assigned to do.
“I still don’t know why you switched from Spanish to French,” he said while shaking his head, glancing at my book.
“I told you, I felt that Spanish was too easy for me, and I wanted a challenge. Taking French is definitely a challenge for me,” I said not lifting my head from the book.
My room then became silent, except for the sounds of the occasional scratching of pencils against paper, the turning of pages, and the steady ticking coming from the clock on the wall. Every once in a while, Adam would sigh and rake a hand through his hair while he concentrated on his Calc. homework. Sometimes I would look up and watch him, having the odd feeling that I wanted it to be my hand running through his hair. I shook off that thought as I went back to concentrating on my homework.
Finishing with my French homework, I put it back in my book bag and then got out my Government homework. I was about to lean back against my pillow when I caught a glance at Adam. It was like I was seeing him in a new light.
His normally black hair seemed extra silky, which were getting to the length where they were threatening to cover his eyes. The features on his face seemed more handsome. I actually noticed his muscles, how his shirt sleeve was short enough to catch a glimpse of his toned biceps. His lips looked all too kissable, and a whiff of his cologne floated over to me.
Finding myself basically drooling over my best friend, I shook my head, feeling myself blush. Quickly I opened the book and flopped back against my pillows and covered my face. I heard Adam give a slight chuckle.
“You seem a bit flustered. You ok Dev?” he asked giving me a goofy grin.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks,” I said as I uncovered my face. But what I just said was a lie. I was anything but ok. Of course I’m flustered, staring at my best friend like he was a piece of eye candy or something. I had to face the reality that I actually like like my best friend.
I just can’t deny it any longer. The way I’ve been feeling lately with all the extra attention from him, and just from being around him. The kisses that he gives are damn good too. I just don’t know what to do now. I like him, but I really don’t know if he feels the same way or not and this is all supposed to be over after Homecoming. Maybe I can convince him after Homecoming to date me for real or something
But then I really like Justin too, and I told him to wait until after Homecoming. What am I going to do about this?
“I want to go to Ireland,” I stated randomly.
“Why do you suddenly want to go to Ireland?” Adam asked, giving me a weird look.
“I just want to get away for a little while. Just think how fun it would be to go there. Them and their sweet accents. Oh aye, I could get used to that. Even if to just go there for Christmas or Spring break would be wickedly awesome,” I said breaking out into a grin.
“Sounds fun, but you wouldn’t go alone would you?” he said concerned.
“Of course not,” I said sitting up. “I’d take you with me.”
“Sounds fun, but why would you take me? Why not Lennie, or Layla, or Justin,” he said the last name with slight disdain.
“Because I would want to go with you. You and I always have the most fun. We’re like two peas in a pod. We’re inseparable,” I said scooting closer to him. “If I left you behind, I would miss you too much.”
“That’s nice to know,” as he scooted closer to me. Soon, we were right next to each other. “I would miss you too much too,” he whispered in my ear.
Turning to look at him, I met his gaze. Slowly, the distance between us closed. Just as his lips touched mine, the front door swung open.
“Devon, we’re home,” I heard mom call up the stairs.
I pulled away from Adam, disappointed that they chose now to come home. “I guess that now is the time to tell them, huh?” I said not being able to meet his gaze.
“I guess so. Come on, let’s do it now so we can get it out of the way,” he said getting off the bed. He offered a hand out to me, and I took it as he helped me up. With his arm around my shoulders, we exited the room and went down the stairs.
“Hey mom, hey dad,” I called out below. “Adam is here, and we’re working on our homework together,” I said descending the last few steps.
“Adam, it’s nice to see you honey. How are you?” my mom began her ramble.
“I’m fine, thanks. How are you Mrs. Bates?” Adam replied.
“I’m just peachy. I’m so happy that you and Devon are finally together. Your mom and I always saw this coming. How is your mom by the way?”
“She’s just fine,” Adam said, trying to contain his grin.
“Hey mom? Where’s dad? I kinda need to tell you guys something,” I said cutting her off before she could go on any further.
“You’re not pregnant, are you?” she asked worriedly.
“No mom, I’m not pregnant,” I laughed.
“I’m glad. You’re still too young to be a mother. These kids today,” she mumbled as she walked towards the living room. “Hey hun! Devon has something to tell us!” she yelled for my dad to come join us.
“Ready to do this?” Adam asked grabbing my hand.
“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be,” I said squeezing his hand as we made our way into the living room.
The next chapter is the last one dealing with the threats for a while until later on in the story. This is the chapter that was the hardest for me to write, and took the longest also, so I hope you like it. And yeah, she finally admits to herself that she like likes him, but only to herself, so I hope you're happy. lol.
