I'd Lie ~Chapter 9~Authors Comments: happy happy joy joy :D Watch "Nuttin But Stringz" they freakin ROCK!!

The day went on, and it was pretty normal. Aside from Physics where Steven would not stop bugging me relentlessly while I tried to take notes, it was fine. Adam and I got along like we usually did, but after a while it got quite annoying, since he was watching over me like a hawk.
All of my friends ended up knowing about the threat, and I was never alone for more than a minute except for during classes. But even then, at least one of my friends had the class with me, so I never got a moment’s peace.
Even at lunch when I had to use the restroom, someone had to go with me. It was nice that they cared for me so much, but I just wanted to be left alone. No matter how much I protested, they wouldn’t listen.
As it was getting towards the end of the day, they weren’t as overprotective as they were earlier. I just had to stay in their eyesight. It felt like I was a little kid, having to tell them wherever I went and such.
During the last period, I was in the library once again, and Justin came in again. I went over and talked to him just to be friendly, but I was interrupted when my cousin John came over and started being inquisitive, asking if everything was okay. Justin gave me a look like he thought I was weird and had psycho friends. I was debating on whether I was going to tell him about the threat or not when John rudely pulled me away.
“What are you doing?” I hissed at him when Justin was out of earshot.
“I’m just being wary is all. You never know if Justin sent that to you or not,” he said stopping and facing me.
“I really don’t think that Justin sent that,” I said doubtedly. “Justin and I almost went out before Adam asked me out. He likes me, if he was to send a threat, I think it would be to Adam instead of me.”
“That makes sense I guess,” he said sheepishly. “But I still don’t trust him Dev. He has been known to do… things. Just please be careful around him.”
“I promise that I’ll be careful around him. Thanks for your concern John, but I think I’ll go back over there,” I said turning around and walking away. I’m glad that I have actual family at this school to watch over me, but he was still too protective. He hung out with my group of friends, so we were really close.
I went back over to Justin’s table and sat down while giving him an apologetic smile.
“So, what exactly is going on here? I’ve noticed that everywhere you go today, you’re flocked by your friends. It’s like your under house arrest, but only more friendlier,” he joked.
“You have no clue,” I said sarcastically. After him giving me a look of disbelief, I sighed and decided that I was going to tell him. “This morning I went on my computer to check my email. This was one of the messages that I received,” I said handing him the paper.
I watched his expression fade from a smile into one of fear. “Do you know who sent this?” he asked, his eyes locking with mine.
“There was no email address. It was anonymous,” I said dully.
“So this is why everyone was acting like you were on the witness protection program or something,” he said trying to make a joke and ease the tension.
“Yeah, but between you and me, their protectiveness is getting a little out of hand. I can’t even get a moment’s peace with them around,” I said giving a slight laugh.
“I’d guess. Never a moment’s privacy. So, if you ever need anything, you know you can count on me,” he said while taking my hand. Normally this would give me butterflies, having him hold my hand like this. But this time, there was absolutely nothing. I shrugged it off, thinking that today’s events were making everything off wack.
“Thanks a lot Justin. It really means a lot to me to know that you care enough to do that,” I said giving him my best smile.
“It’s no problem doll. I would do almost anything for you,” he said with a wink.
I wanted to hit him over the head for calling me doll. It’s just not a term that I like to be described as or go by. It’s so old, and kind of degrading.
“It was nice talking to you Justin. But I’ve got to check in the books and work on my homework. I’ll talk to you later,” I said while standing up.
He gave me a quick nod and went to work on his homework, or whatever he did. I made my way over to behind the counter and started to check in the books that were inside of the book drop box. I was on my fourth or fifth book when I felt a hand on mine. I looked up to see Adam staring at me.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in Calculus?” I asked leaning over the counter.
“We have a substitute, and I persuaded the sub to let me come here to let me work on the English paper due next week,” he said with a smirk.
“You’re very sneaky mister,” I said poking him in the nose.
“Ow, that hurt,” he mocked, while rubbing his nose.
“You’re such a wimp,” I said going back to the books.
“Will you kiss it and make it better?” he asked with puppy dog eyes.
Rolling my eyes, I leaned back over the counter. “Do you really think that if I kissed your nose, it would make it better?” I said sarcastically.
“There’s only one way to find out,” he winked.
That’s my best friend for you. I laughed as I shook my head and went around the counter to stand by him. “Now come here,” I said as I grabbed his head. I planted a kiss right on his nose and giggled as I backed up. “Now, does that feel better?”
“Much,” he said grinning like a fool.
“Good, now go work on your paper,” I said shooing him away to a table. “I’ll be over in a bit to work on my homework as soon as I’m done checking in the books.”
He pouted as I shooed him away and he went to the table that John was sitting at. He took out his books and went to work as I walked back behind the counter again. I watched him as he began talking to John animatedly, waving his hands in the air and laughing. Shaking my head, I went back to checking in the books.
After I had checked in all the books, I took my materials and headed over to the table to sit with John and Adam. On the way over there, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. Taking it out, I saw that there was a new text message. With the Librarian not around, I quickly took a glance at it. It was from an unknown number. I just stopped in my tracks and stared at the phone.
“You jus never learn, do u? Better watch ur back!”
How in the world did this sicko get my cell phone number? I was once again in a trance like state as I made my way over to the table. Adam and John stopped talking when they saw me sit down. Wordlessly, I slid my phone over to Adam. He picked it up and his face turned to disgust as soon as he read what was on the screen.
“Is it another note from your admirer?” John asked sarcastically.
I just nodded my head as Adam wrapped a protective arm around me. “What did I do to deserve this?” I said softly.
I couldn’t focus on anything the rest of the period. Whenever I tried to focus on my school work, I ended up freezing, and dropping my pencil, to lose track of what I was trying to do. Occasionally, Adam and John would glance around the room to make sure no one did anything funny.
As soon as the bell rang, we stood up and exited the library and made our way to the lockers. When we got within a few feet of my locker, I saw Lennie standing there.
“Hey girlie. I’m gonna walk with you down to the locker room, make sure that nothing happens to you,” she said cheerfully. But when she saw my face, she wasn’t too cheerful anymore. “What happened now?”
“I got a text during study hall,” I said handing my phone over to her while opening up my locker. As I was putting my books into my book bag, I heard a loud thud, which was followed by Lennie yelling.
“Who the hell is doing this? I can’t wait until we catch them and make them pay! I wish that they were here right now so I could beat the crap out of them,” she huffed.
“I’m sure glad that I’m not that person,” Adam laughed watching Lennie’s expressions.
“I would hope that you’re not that person. Because you’re dating her, and how would it be to send death threats to the person you’re dating? That would be just weird,” she said while shaking her head.
“Ok, let’s head down to the locker room,” I said while giving her a push. “Adam, our practice is over at 5:30. Will you be done with cross country practice by then?”
“We usually don’t get done until 6. Do you think that you could wait for a half hour until I get done,” he said leaning on his locker.
“I’m sure that I can manage. I’ll see you then,” I said while walking backwards.
“Wait,” he said as he grabbed my wrist and tugged me towards him. “Be careful out there today. You never know when this person could strike. I’ll see you later Dev,” he said as he gave me a peck on the lips and let me go.
“He’s really taking this whole making it seem like we’re dating really seriously. With the kisses and all, it could fool just about anyone,” I thought to myself as Lennie and I made our way down the hallway.
“You’re lucky that you have Adam. He really cares about you,” Lennie said as she nudged me in the shoulder.
“I guess I am,” I said shrugging.
On the way to the locker room, we talked about last night’s game. I still couldn’t believe how much better the other team had gotten.
“If it wasn’t for your last kick, I wouldn’t have been able to head butt the ball into the goal. That was so kick-ass!” she said giddily.
“Indeed it was,” I laughed as I opened the door to the locker room.
Immediately, a pungent smell reached my nose. It was if something dead was inhabiting the locker room.
“What is that smell?” Lennie said voicing my thoughts.
“I don’t know, but it’s coming from over there,” Jessica, one of the juniors said. We followed where she was pointing and it was in the area where my locker was.
Carefully, I made my way over to my locker while plugging my nose. Slowly, I opened the lock, and swung the door opened. I let out a shriek as there was a dead carcass of a cat hanging from one of the hooks in my locker.
“What is all the commotion about?” Coach Martin said as she walked into the locker room. “And what in the world is that smell?”
“Someone put a dead cat in my locker,” I choked out.
“Bates, could you please come to my office. I would like to talk to you. Everyone else is to change and immediately go out onto the practice field. Start stretching and we’ll start practice when I get there,” Coach said, and then headed to her office.
I quickly changed and then headed into coach’s office. “Devon, can you please explain to me why there was a dead cat in your locker?” Coach said, staring at me.
“I really wish that I could. I have no explanation except for that I believe that someone is out to get me. This was one of the emails I received this morning,” I said as I took the paper out of my pocket and handed it over to her.
“Has anything else happened?” she asked while reading over the paper.
“I received a text message during study hall. It basically told me to watch my back,” I said while waiting for her to do something.
“Do you know how serious this is Devon?” she asked placing the paper down on the desk to look at me. I shook my head. “This is really serious. If your life is being threatened, we have to tell the police about it. You’re such a nice girl, when you’re not out there on the soccer field terrorizing the other team,” she said while sitting back in her chair.
“Here’s what we’re going to do. I’m going to tell one of the janitors about the cat. You go ahead and go out to the practice field and start practice. Start with the runs, and if I’m not down there by then, do the passing exercises. But you must promise me that you will tell your parents about this,” she said looking me in the eyes. I nodded in understanding, giving a silent promise that I would. “You’re dismissed,” she said as she stood up.
Walking out of the locker room, I thought of who could do it. The only ones who had access to the locker room were the cheerleaders, soccer players, volleyball, and cross country runners. It narrowed it down a bit, but it still didn’t help. My thoughts lost in space, I jogged out to the practice area, ready to push away what happened today.
