I'd Lie ~Chapter 8~Authors Comments: Something really HUGE happens in this chapter. It's like... Whoa. I wasn't going to post this until tomorrow, but I was just so excited from yesterday that I had to post it today :D

I woke up to the sound of my cell phone going off. My thoughts were jumbled as to who would be calling this early in the morning. “Hello?” I said groggily into the phone.
“Good morning sunshine,” I heard Adam’s cheerful voice on the other side of the phone.
“Adam? Why are you calling? Do you have any clue what time it is?” I growled into the phone, half-awake.
“It’s 5:30. I thought that it was a good time to wake you up. Right now I’m taking my morning run,” he said, as I now heard faint footsteps along with his breathing coming out slightly uneven.
“I usually don’t get up for at least another fifteen to twenty minutes. Those are precious moments that I need,” I groaned.
“Then go back to bed for 15 to twenty more minutes,” I heard him laugh.
“I’m already awake. I may as well just start getting ready now. Thanks a lot Adam,” I grumbled. “Next time that you want to wake me up, try calling a little bit later.”
“Will do Dev. Am I giving you a ride to school today?”
I thought for a moment before answering. “Sounds fine to me. I’ll see you in a while then,” I said hanging up.
While I was in the shower, my thoughts drifted to Adam. I’m starting to get scared at how much I’ve been having thoughts of him lately. Would the car ride be awkward today with thoughts of yesterday running in our heads? I know that it would definitely be on my mind, but I can’t say the same for him. Who ever knows what goes on inside Adam’s head?
After the shower and getting dressed, I blow-dried my brown hair and left it. Since it’s naturally straight, luckily I didn’t have to spend time straightening it. Then I made my way down into the kitchen where mom and dad were getting ready to leave for work.
“Good morning,” I said as I made my way towards the cereal cabinet.
“Isn’t this a little early for you dear? Usually we don’t see you for another twenty to thirty minutes,” mom said as she poured herself a cup of coffee.
“Adam decided to call me and wake me up while he was on his run this morning. He woke me up too early,” I whined as I poured myself a bowl of Frosted Flakes.
“First Adam drives you to school, and he takes you home from the game. And now he’s waking you up in the morning. Is there anything going on between you and him?” my dad asked suspiciously.
“Well, we’re kind of sorta dating,” I said softly. But it wasn’t too soft since my mom heard it.
“It’s about time!” mom exclaimed. Dad and I just gave her quizzical looks as she had a goofy grin plastered onto her face. “Bonnie and I always said that one day you two would get together. We always said how you two would make the perfect couple and get married someday. Now it’s finally going to happen,” she said gazing off.
I just ignored her and dug into my cereal, not wanting to hear anymore about this. I’ve had too many people at school doing the same thing, so I really don’t need it from my mom. Dad just gave me a smile and went back to reading the newspaper. Mom kept up her rant about Adam and me as I finished off my cereal.
“I’ll see you guys later,” I said giving them each a hug and a kiss on the cheek before I headed back up the stairs to my room. They would be leaving in a few minutes to head off for work, so I said goodbye to them now.
Once in my room, I went into the bathroom connected to my room and brushed my teeth and put on some eye liner. That was the only type of make-up that I wore, because I believe that it really does make my eyes look better. I love how it makes my regular brown eyes pop out more, making them look nice instead of ordinary.
Looking at my watch, I saw that I still had about 20 minutes to spare before I left for school, I quickly went on the computer to check my email. There were numerous new emails. Some were jokes from my friends, and also there was the junk mail. I was checking them off to delete them when I saw a message from an unknown person.
After deleting the selected messages, I opened the message, curious as to what it read and whom it was from. Scrolling down, I saw nothing but blankness until I was about halfway down the page. The font was large and in red. The message said:
“You Bitch! I bet that you think you’re little miss perfect. As if you haven’t already ruined things enough, yesterday you went too far. Just watch out, or your pretty little neck will be snapped in two.”
My brain went numb. I had no idea who sent this message. I had to admit that I was a bit scared. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before, and I didn’t know what to do. Not knowing what else to do, I printed it off and tucked it into my pocket. I was going to tell someone about this soon as I got the chance.
Like I was in a trance, I shut off the computer, grabbed my stuff for school, and then headed downstairs and out the door. I was still in shock as I approached Adam’s car. Like a robot, I opened the back door and shoved my backpack in there. I was about to open the passenger door when I felt a hand on my wrist. Adam spun me around to face him.
“Are you alright Dev? You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” he said with concern.
Sticking my hand in my back pocket, I took the paper I printed off and handed it over to him. He looked at me questioningly before he opened it. As he read it, his face turned red and contorted with anger.
“Who sent this to you?” he said angrily.
“It didn’t say,” I said, my voice trembling.
I was wrapped into a tight protective embrace. “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to you Devon. I swear that I’ll protect you without hesitation. We’ll find whoever sent this and make them regret it. Everything will be ok, I promise,” he crooned into my ear while softly stroking my hair.
I felt perfectly safe while in his arms. His grip was so firm and protective; I could almost forget why I was so scared. But when I relaxed, it brought me out of the shock I was in, and I broke down crying nearly collapsing to the ground. Luckily Adam was there to keep me standing upright. I clung on to him, not wanting to ever let go for I felt that if I did, I would be vulnerable.
“Do you still want to go to school today? I could understand if you didn’t. If you explained to your parents, I sure that they would-”
“No,” I cut him off, sounding unsteady. “I’m going. If I don’t go, they’ll win, knowing that they got to me. I have to be strong and show them that I’m not scared of them, however untrue that fact may be.”
“Are you sure?” he asked stepping back to look at me.
I nodded my head, not trusting myself to speak. With a grim expression on his face, he opened the door for me and shut it after I got in. He walked around to the other side of the car and hopped in. He backed the car out of the driveway and we were off towards the school.
The drive to school was silent. I just sat there in the passenger seat of his car, staring out in front of me. Adam reached over and took a hold of my hand, and just left it there for the entire ride to school. It was actually quite comforting, just having contact and knowing that someone was there for me.
We pulled into the school parking lot. Adam parked the car and we just sat there in the silence together. “Are you sure that you want to go in?” he asked, turning in his seat to look at me while giving my hand a tight squeeze.
I nodded my head. “We’re already here. There’s no turning back now.” Slowly, I opened the door and stepped out. After stepping out, I grabbed my stuff out of the back seat and with a deep breath I began walking towards the building.
The feeling that I had today was almost like yesterday, but only today I was scared for my life instead of just being afraid of what the people at school thought. I didn’t like this feeling at all. Being scared of what the people thought was a lot better than being scared for my life. With Adam by my side, we made our way to the school.
When we entered the school, Adam gave dirty looks to anyone who was looking at me weird. I really don’t think those people were giving me weird looks to scare me off, but because I probably looked like hell. I didn’t complain though, because it felt nice to have someone care about me so much.
We approached the lockers, and I was still robot-like as I opened my locker, put my bookbag in there and got out the needed books for Physics. Looking down at the ground, I just stared at my gear bag. “I need to go put this in the locker room,” I said basically to myself.
“I’ll go with you. You can’t go alone,” Adam said picking up my bag.
“But you can’t go into the locker room with me,” I said smiling as I took my bag back from him. I think that was the first time I actually smiled all morning.
“Morning guys,” Layla said as she walked by us.
“You’re just in time Layla. Could you please go with Devon to the locker room?” Adam asked with pleading eyes.
“Devon’s a big girl. I’m sure that she doesn’t need me to go to the locker room with her,” Layla scoffed.
Adam rolled his eyes as he took the paper out of his pocket and handed it to her. She had the same quizzical expression on her face as Adam had when she opened the paper. After a few seconds, Layla’s face changed into one of rage.
“I found that on my email this morning,” I said softly looking down at the floor.
“We are going to find the bitch that sent this to you and make her pay. Don’t worry Dev, we won’t let anything happen to you. Now, let’s get going to the locker room,” she said as she took the bag from my shoulder and stormed off towards the locker room.
With a shrug, I hastened after her, Adam close by my side. Once reaching the locker room, Layla basically flung open the door. I laughed as I followed her in while Adam stood outside the door. I loved how protective everyone was, and I was glad that I had them as my friends. I don’t know what I would do without them. They were some of the best friends that anyone could ask ever for.
My laughter quickly faded as when we entered the locker room, Marissa was in there. We went over to my locker, and I undid the lock and then put my gear in. As I was closing my locker, Marissa passed by and said, “Later bitch.”
I followed after her and grabbed her by the shoulders to spin her around to face me. “It was you, wasn’t it?” I seethed at her.
“What are you talking about Bates?” she said cluelessly.
“I’m talking about the email. This morning when I checked my email, I found a death threat. I know how much you hate me. So I’m guessing that it was you. Just to let you know, I’m not afraid of you,” I said, my face inches from hers.
“I didn’t send you a death threat. Sure, I may hate you on the field, but that’s only because you pick so many frickin’ fights that I always have to deflect off the penalty kicks. I just want you to get your act together. Let me see the threat,” she said while holding out her hand.
Layla still had it form when Adam showed her, so she took it out of her pocket and handed it over to her. Marissa’s face clouded with confusion as she read the paper.
“Jeez Bates, what did you do to this chick? It sounds as if she really hates you. If it makes any consolation, I’ll watch out for you. You’re the team captain and also the damn best player that we have. I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you. Be careful Bates,” she said looking into my eyes with concern as she handed me back the paper and walked out of the locker room.
“It’s funny, because now I actually don’t think it was her,” I said as I turned around to go back to my locker.
“Whatever you say Dev,” Layla said as she gave me a pat on the back.
There was banging on the door followed by Adam’s voice. “Is everything ok in there? I just saw Marissa come out of there.”
I shut the locker door and we exited the room. “Everything is fine Adam, but thanks for your concern,” I said while lightly tapping his cheek.
“But Marissa hates you. Are you sure that you’re fine?”
“It’s funny, because at first I thought it was her. But I confronted her about it, and she said that it wasn’t her. She also said that she would watch out for me, and the look in her eyes when she told me to be careful was a really sincere look of concern. I believe that it’s not her,” I said with a shrug of my shoulders.
“Let’s hope that you’re right on this. Let’s go to the classroom,” he said while taking my hand and leading me there.
“See you in choir Layla,” I said as I turned to wave at her. She shook her head and snickered as she waved back and then headed off to her first class. I was now in a much better mood then when I arrived there. At that moment, nothing could bring me down.
This whole message thing sets up for what I want to happen with the ending. Will this threat bring Devon and Adam even closer together? Or will it tear them apart? Who sent it, and why? It will all be revealed at the end! Muah ha ha ha ha... you have to wait to see who it is! HAHA. I'm just excited that they're both going to OSU together... :D
