            The next morning when I awoke, I just lied there in bed thinking about the previous day, and what could possibly happen today. Who knows what would happen today. You can never tell what will happen at school when there is a new couple. Especially when a girl snags a guy that has always been single. Oh, how I can’t wait to let the fun begin.

            After brushing my teeth and doing all the necessary things I do in order to get ready for school, I was heading out to my car to start it when I heard Adam calling me. I turned over towards his house and saw him leaning up against his car. He was grinning while motioning me over towards his car. After carefully closing my door, with back pack in hand I walked over towards him and stopped a foot away from him with a hand on my hip.

            “So, I was thinking that I could drive you to school today. Give everyone the impression that it’s real, ya know?” he said with a slight shrug, looking at me with puppy dog eyes.

            I rolled my eyes. Adam can be such a dweeb, but I still love him. He is my dweeb after all. “I guess that you could drive me to school, but on one condition,” I said raising an eyebrow at him.

            “What is that?” he asked gulping.

            “Don’t give me the puppy dog eyes. They make you look like a little kid,” I said laughing as I walked around to the other side of his car and got in.

            “But I thought that the puppy dog eyes make me look cute,” he pouted as he slid into his car and started it.

            “You’re already cute Adam. You don’t need the puppy dog eyes. But it does help you get things your way,” I said with a soft laugh.

            “You think that I’m cute?” Adam feigned shock. “Now that you’ve said that, I’m going to have to tease you about that,” he smirked.

            “Just shut up and get going already,” I said lightly slapping him on the arm.

            “You’re so mean. I should file for abuse,” he joked as he revved up the engine and headed out of the driveway.

            I love just hanging out and talking with Adam. He always knows how to make me smile and forget about everything. He even made me forget about how when we would arrive at school, we would be under scrutiny. Nothing would ever be the same.

            After we pulled into the student parking lot and into an empty parking space, we sat there in silence for a minute after he turned the car off. I stared at my lap and fidgeted with my fingers while Adam tapped on the steering wheel.

            “You ready to face the school?” I heard him ask, trying to sound sure of himself.

            “Not really, but what else is there to do? It’s not like we can just skip school. I have a soccer match against our rivals today, and I’m pretty sure that you have a meet, right?” I said, looking pointedly at him.

            “Right. We’ll figure out the transportation for after school later today. My brain isn’t functioning properly at the moment. The only thing that it can function on at the moment is the hordes of people who will watch us as we enter the school,” he gulped.

            “May as well get it over with,” I muttered, opening the door and stepping out of the car.

            Adam opened his door and stepped out, coming around to my side of the car. With a simultaneous deep breath, we locked our fingers and set out for the front of the building.

            Usually when we drove our separate ways, we would wait for one another before we headed into the building. We would usually talk about homework or upcoming tests, and even about our upcoming sport events.

            But not this time. The walk was deadly silent, and driving me nuts. I would look nervously around the parking lot to see if anyone was watching us, but then stopped when I found myself just being paranoid. Every now and then I felt Adam squeeze my hand in reassurance, and I would just look over at him and smile.

            It felt as if it took forever, but we finally reached the front of the building. Adam slowly opened the door, gesturing for me to go in first and he followed after. I stopped a few feet inside to let him catch up to me. Soon as he caught up, we fell into step and started our walk down the hallway to our lockers.

            People were already starting to whisper and stare as we passed by different hordes of people. Their stares were making me nervous, and I was beginning to shake, and it was hard for me to continue walking. This has never happened before, but then again I’ve never had this much stress or pressure put on me before.

            Adam slipped his arm around my waist and helped me walk through the halls. Right now, I didn’t care what everyone else thought of us, I just wanted to get my locker and for all the trembling and shaking to stop.

            Luckily, Adam’s locker was right next to mine, since our last names are so close. Mine is Bates, and his is Bauer. When we got to the lockers, I put my back up against it and sank to the floor, holding my knees to myself.

            “Are you alright Dev?” he asked with concern, kneeling down in front of me.

            “I honestly don’t know,” I said softly, still trembling a little bit.

            Adam scooted up against his locker so he could sit down next to me. “We still have a good fifteen to twenty minutes before classes start, so we can just chill here for a while until you feel better, okay?” he said while putting an arm around me.

            I just nodded and leaned up against him, my trembling and shakiness beginning to finally settle down. “Adam? Thanks for being a great friend,” I said meekly.

            “I’m the one who should be thanking you,” he whispered into my ear. “You agreed to this whole scheme, when you could have said no and went out with Justin instead.”

            “What kind of friend would I be if I said no?” I joked.

            “The evil bitchy kind of friend,” he replied with a smirk.

            “Take it back,” I said lightly hitting him.

            “And what would happen if I didn’t take it back?”

            “I don’t know,” I said looking across the hallway. “I guess that I would have to punish you somehow, but I don’t know just how yet,” I grinned.

            “I look forward to it,” he grinned, his face just an inch away from mine.

            I don’t know why, but he just made me blush. Adam and I always joke around like this, but never had I ever blushed before. While looking down at my feet since I didn’t want to look at Adam, I saw a pair of feet standing in front of us. Looking up, I saw my friend Layla looking down at us.

            “So, are the rumors true then?” she asked tapping her foot impatiently.

            “What rumors?” I asked, giving her an innocent smile.

            She rolled her eyes and gestured back and forth between Adam and me. “The rumor that you two are an official couple. Well?”

            “They’re true,” Adam said while giving my shoulders an affectionate squeeze.

            “It’s about damn time!” Layla said exasperated.

            Adam and I gave each other quizzical looks, and then glanced back up at Layla, who was smiling so big, I didn’t think that it could get any bigger.

            “I’m sorry, but once again, I think that we’re clueless,” Adam replied.

            “I’m talking that it’s about time that you two got together. Everyone else in school saw it coming, how close you two are and everything. How long have you two been keeping this quiet? And why didn’t you tell me sooner?” she exclaimed while glaring at me.

            My mouth felt like it hit the floor at her words. The whole school really expected that Adam and I would get together one day? I know that saying that you should marry your best friend, but Adam says that he’s not interested in anybody at the moment. I always look at Adam in a brotherly fashion, so I didn’t see anything. Where did the people come up with this stuff?

            “Devon and I decided that we wanted to keep it quiet for a few days, and give it time to develop before we came out with it publicly. It would have been kept quiet too if it weren’t for the blabbering mouths of my team,” he grumbled.

            “A few days? That’s cool, but,” she trailed off glancing back at me. “If you two were dating a few days ago, then how come you have a date with Justin tonight?”

            “For one, I am no longer going on the date with Justin,” I said sadly. “Two, Adam and I agreed that I could go on a date with him until we came out, just in case us two didn’t work, I could just continue on with Justin. But that’s not the case anymore,” I said staring her down.

            “Ok, no need to get so defensive,” she laughed. “But does Justin know about the two of you yet?”

            I just stared down at my feet, finding the decals on my shoe interesting. “He doesn’t know about you two? I can’t wait to see his reaction when he finds out,” she said after I didn’t reply.

            I never thought of that. He thought that I liked him, and when he found out that I was now “dating” Adam right after I cancelled the date, he’ll probably be furious. Any chance that I was hoping of before for a chance with him had been completely diminished.

            “Hey, I think I should be getting my stuff ready for my class. I think that the subject should be dropped for now,” I said while standing up.

            “I’ll catch you two later,” she said while turning away. “By the way, you two really are a cute couple,” she said with a smile before walking off.

            Turning around, I banged my head into my locker as I turned the numbers on the lock so that I could open it and put my crap inside and get my things for my first class. Adam just watched me as I started moving things and not caring what happened to them. After I got my things and shut my locker, I kicked it and let out a frustrated sigh as I once again banged my head on it and just left it there.

            “Are you gonna be ok Dev?” he asked placing a hand on my shoulder.

            “I won’t know until after today and all the questioning is over,” I slightly laughed.

            Adam quickly opened his locker and got his stuff out and then shut it so he could lean up against it. “Ready to head off?”

            Luckily, Adam was in most of my classes. There were only two that we didn’t have together, and that was he took Spanish while I had French, and he had Calculus while I had a study hall. We only need three math credits in order to graduate, so I decided not to take a math this year. I could have easily passed it, since I was a math wiz, but I decided that I needed a study hall to have more time to work on my homework.

            “Yeah, let’s go,” I said standing up straight. “Let the torture now officially begin,” I thought as he made a grab for my hand and we headed off to first period.

So, once again, I'm sorry for the delay with the posting. It's been hard when my house hasn't had power since Sunday night. It came on Thurs morn, but went back out later in the day, and came on again later in the evening. So, being without power really sux... but I feel sorry for the people down in Texas. Our winds were only up to like 60mph, and they had them coming at like 120 or so... Luckily for us, and also it was only the winds instead of the whole storm.

So, I love all you guys for your comments and ratings! They totally make my day! And since it's my birthday, you all should BLOW the ratings off the roof (or page) as a birthday gift, lol. I have more chaps written, but I only post them one day at a time, that way when I have writer's block, I still can post something without having to force it out and making it crummy.
