I'd Lie ~Chapter 1~Authors Comments: Here's another one! Just for you guys :D
|
“You said what?” I said, trying not to be angry. This couldn’t be happening. My best friend had just told his team that we were together, and those guys didn’t know how to keep their mouths shut. I was supposed to go on a date with Justin Marzak tomorrow. But if everyone thought that I was dating Adam, that wasn’t going to happen.
Adam looked over at me, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head. “Come on Dev. If I didn’t tell them something, then I would have had to go and ask some random girl out. And you know that I’m not interested in anyone. By saying that you and I were dating, I wouldn’t have to hurt some poor girl’s feelings, and keep my reputation intact.”
“Did you ever think of what this would do to me?” I shouted as I slapped him on the back of the head. “I was supposed to go on a date with Justin Marzak tomorrow! I’ve waited forever to finally get him to notice me. And now because of your stupid mouth, my chances with him are most likely now ruined,” I said letting out a frustrated sigh as I put my head in my hands.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were going on a date with him tomorrow?” he asked a bit hurt. “I mean, well usually tell each other everything, and now you’re starting to hide things from me. What gives?”
“Adam, this is the only thing that I have never told you about. I knew that you would probably end up showing up on the date and somehow ruining it, like you have with so many others. I guess that I don’t have to wait until that actual date to have you ruin it now,” I said sarcastically while glaring at him.
“Come on Devon, you should be thanking me,” he said full of himself. After I gave him a quizzical glance, he shrugged and laughed. “Everyone knows that Justin is stupid. I know you Dev, how you love having intellectual conversations. Talking to him would be like talking to a cardboard box,” he laughed to himself.
I gave him a smack-tap on his leg. “Don’t make fun of Justin, it’s not nice. Besides, I’m sure that he has many other, amiable qualities,” I said unsure of myself.
Adam fell against the back of the swing laughing, setting it into motion. “Oh really? I would like to hear what some of his ‘amiable qualities’ are, and you can’t say that he’s good looking,” he smirked, crossing his arms.
I sat forward, resting my elbows on my knees with my head propped in my hands. “Well, I guess that he’s very friendly?”
Adam scoffed next to me. “Please, Justin is nice to anything that walks on two legs. You can’t think of any traits, can you?” he asked leaning forward to look at me.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him watching me intently, with a cocky smirk playing on his lips. “If you’d give me time, I’m sure that I could think of something,” I muttered sitting back up and leaning against the back of the swing.
“Come on. How can you like someone if you don’t even know what some of their good traits are? If you just like him because of his looks, that is pretty shallow Dev,” he said while shaking his head as if he were disappointed.
I had a feeling that I wasn’t going to win this little argument. “I don’t like him just because of his looks. But enough about that. What are we going to do about the situation?” I asked, a little deflated.
A playful grin spread across his face. “I just need you to pretend to be my girlfriend. At least until the homecoming dance.”
“Why until the homecoming dance?” I said confused.
“The dance is only 3 weeks away. If I break it off with you too soon, the guys will know that we’re faking it. I think that three weeks is a reasonable amount of time to ‘date’ someone, and then after the dance we could say that it didn’t work out and go our own way,” he said happily, sounding like it was pure genius to him.
“I really don’t like the whole lying part Adam. You know how much I hate lying. And how do you expect people to buy this? Do we have to keep up the regular boyfriend/girlfriend actions?” I asked, not chancing a look at him.
Next to me, Adam began slightly bouncing in his seat. “Of course we have to keep up the regular traditions! People are going to be expecting things, like you said, so it’s only fair that we show off a little PDA. But we won’t do anything to affectionate if you’re uncomfortable with it,” he said quietly, looking down at the ground.
“Thanks Adam. You’re the best friend a girl could ever have. I’ll pretend to be your girlfriend if it means so much to you,” I said giving him a smile while grabbing onto his hand and squeezing it.
We both just sat there in silence, lost in our own thoughts. I didn’t know what the following weeks would bring, but I knew they would be wild. Our hands were still interlocked, him rubbing his thumb over my knuckles subconsciously. When I chanced a look over at him, he had a frown on his face.
“What are you thinking about?” I asked him quietly.
He looked over at me, his eyes sad and full of pain. “You know that if the roles were reversed, that I’d lie for you in a heartbeat. No matter what, I’d lie for you,” he said sadly.
I didn’t know what to say to that. Of course I felt the same way, but I felt that if I said so, he would think that I was just saying it to make him feel better. So instead of replying, I just laid my head on his shoulder and stared out into the yard.
We stayed like that for a good ten minutes. I started to drift off as he began to stroke my hair, just enjoying each other’s company. After a quick glance at his watch, he heaved a deep sigh and sat me up.
“Dinner’s going to be done soon. I’d best be leaving before mom decides to yell over here,” he said unenthused, while slowly shaking his head. “I’ll talk to you later Dev,” he said as he stood up. He bent down and placed a kiss on my forehead before he retreated down the steps and made his way next door to his house.
I watched his retreating form until he went into his house. After he went inside, my thoughts began to turn. I would be pretending to be his girlfriend for the next few weeks. Part of me did flips when I thought of him and me together, even if it was only fake. Any girl that I know of would die to be in my shoes. But then another thought ran through my head.
He only chose me because I’m his best friend and he didn’t want to hurt some poor girl’s feelings. For some reason, it hurt that that was the only reason he had chosen me. I had to get a hold of myself, since this is fake, after all.
Standing up, I slowly dragged my feet into the house and went up the stairs to go to my bedroom. I dreaded what I had to do next. Call Justin and tell him that the date for tomorrow was off. This would definitely ruin my chances with him for after my little charade with Adam, since I don’t think a girl has ever turned him down before.
Flopping down on my bed, I picked up my cell phone that was lying on the desk next to my bed. I went through my contacts, searching for his number. I’ve been talking to him so much for the past month that I just put him in my contact list. When I found his number, I hesitated slightly before I hit the call button.
My heart started to beat faster as I heard the rings. On the third ring, he picked up his phone. “Hello?” I heard his voice say into the phone groggily.
“Hey Justin, it’s me Devon,” I said unsurely.
“Oh, hey D. So what’s up?” he said with more energy.
“Not much, just the usual,” I said jokingly.
“So, are you ready for that date tomorrow?” he asked in a low tone.
“Listen, Justin? About the date tomorrow… something came up so I won’t be able to go on the date,” I said a bit upset.
“What happen? Did a relative or someone you know die? I’m so sorry D. Do you want me to come over there and comfort you?” he asked sincerely.
I thought to myself about telling Adam that Justin was a sincere and caring person, but that could wait until after this conversation. “No Justin, no one died. But thanks for caring about that. Something else came up that I really can’t explain. I’m really sorry that I have to cancel the date,” I said with a sigh.
“That’s alright babe,” I could hear his smile on the other end. Though, I had to take a point off for him calling me babe. “We can just reschedule it for another time. What day would be good for you?”
“I’m kinda busy until after homecoming. But after then I’m free,” I said trying to sound like I was cheerful.
“What has you tied up until after homecoming? I don’t know if I can wait that long Devon. It’s just such a long time. Well, I guess that I’ll see you at school tomorrow. Bye D,” he said as he hung up the phone.
I stared at my phone, it blinking the length of time that I talked to him. Sighing, I threw my phone onto the floor and turned over to lie face down. What had I just gotten myself into?
