Jenny opened her eyes and silently cried. She was trying to be strong for Colin, but it was so hard to do when she was basically all alone. Even though he was watching over her, she had no one that she could talk to, or felt as if she could trust.
Her shoulders began to heave as her cries turned into sobs. She took the air bag away from her face and flung it towards the end of her bed so she could breathe better. Taking in deep breaths, her sobs came out louder, alerting the nurse that she was awake.
Quickly, the nurse made her way over to the door. She opened it and peered around until she finally saw someone. “Dr. Greeves, she’s awake,” she said urgently.
Within a moment, Dr. Greeves breezed into Jenny’s room, looking at her with concern as pity filled his eyes. He strode over to her bed, looking down at her. “Jenny, what’s wrong?”
The heaving of her sobs slowed down, and her breathing grew quieter as she looked up at him through teary eyes. “It’s Colin. He’s… he’s,” she said softly before she once again burst into sobs, her shoulders trembling with each intake of breath.
Dr. Greeves looked at the nurse questioningly, who raised her hands in defense.
“Don’t look at me. I didn’t say anything to her. The only reason that I knew she was awake was because she was crying,” she said sadly.
He looked back to Jenny with curiosity. “But then how does she know about him if you didn’t tell her about it? This is too weird.”
Slowly, he moved over towards the side of her bed, as if he was afraid that he would somehow scare her. “Jenny? I’m Dr. Greeves. I am terribly sorry about your brother. But I would like to know how you know about him, when nobody told you about him,” he said curiously.
Jenny stared at him questioningly, mixed in with fear. “This will probably sound really weird and unbelievable, but Colin came to me in my dreams. He and I talked about… things, and one of them being that he died in the car crash, and now he’s my guardian angel. Sounds strange, huh?” she laughed to herself, not looking at the doctor.
“Anything is possible, since you two were so close. I can’t imagine how you two handled this past year. All of your family dying, leaving just you and him to fend for yourselves these past couple of months. And your brother was only 19, and had to take care of you and himself, I don’t doubt that he made it to heaven and is now watching over you,” Dr. Greeves said fondly.
“Yeah, we were really close. He was the best big brother ever. Wait, how did you know about my family?” she asked with fear.
“I’m your doctor. I asked if you had any family, that way we could let them know that you were here. But then my secretary told me that you have no family. I have contacted the police, and I am hoping that they will investigate into this. I promise that I will not let anything happen to you,” he said softly.
“That’s nice of you Doctor,” Jenny said softly. “But why do you want to help me?”
“When I look at you, I see something special in you. If I had a daughter, I believe that she would be like you, but my wife died before we had children, and I have never remarried. I feel that it is my duty to help you live,” he said as tears threatened his eyes.
“Thank you Dr. Greeves. I’m happy because I feel as if now I can actually trust someone and won’t be alone out there in the world, trying to survive. Thank you so much,” she said hoarsely, tears forming at the corner of her eyes.
“You’re not out of the clear yet. After your casts are removed, you’ll still need to get through physical rehabilitation. After then, we can hopefully get you out of here and into safe care. Although, right now we will still have security watching over you,” he replied patting her on the leg.
After he told her that information, silence filled the room. It was quite awkward between the two, as Dr. Greeves checked her over, while Jenny just lied there, wondering to herself if she could really trust him. He seemed genuinely concerned about her, but her brother told her to trust no one.
After Dr. Greeves was done checking her over, he quietly left the room and signaled for a nurse before he left. He took a quick glance around to make sure that no one was listening in on their conversation.
“I want you to stay with Jenny at all times. No one enters this room except if you personally know that they are on staff. This young lady could still be in danger, and I don’t want to take any chances. Do you understand me?” he asked staring the nurse down.
“Perfectly, Dr. Greeves,” she gulped.
Dr. Greeves strode away, leaving the nurse to watch his retreating form. With a sigh of relief, she quietly entered the room and shut the door behind her, making sure that no one else was in the room that wasn’t supposed to be there.
The nurse went further into the room, glancing at Jenny who had fallen into a peaceful sleep, her chest slowly heaving up and down. Every now and then her left hand would twitch, or her body would shake as if she had gotten a chill.
“Poor girl, I can’t even begin to imagine what she’s going through,” the nurse said to herself as she approached the left side of Jenny’s bed, staring down at her.
Slowly, she lowered her hand and swept it across the bandage on her forehead. “There’s just something about you Jenny Jefferson,” she said quietly. “Dr. Greeves is usually just a cranky old man who doesn’t care what happens to his patients, except for making sure that they are healthy. To see him care about you this much, you must be something special. I really hope that you pull through and will be okay. I’d hate to see this side of him leave,” she laughed as she pulled her hand back.
With a sigh and last glance down at Jenny, she went and sat down across from her bed, being able to keep an eye on Jenny and the door. She noticed that it was faintly a little chilly in that area of the room, but she didn’t give it a second thought as she busied herself with thoughts of Jenny being the lively girl that she thought she was.
Colin floated nearby as Jenny exchanged words with the doctor.
“I don’t know if I should trust this doctor or not. He seems genuinely concerned about Jenny, but I just don’t know,” Colin said frustrated.
“Just calm down kiddo. Doctors are usually the good guys. Take it from me, I know this doctor, and he usually is a plain old grouch to every patient that he treats. But yet he has shown a deep interest in keeping your sister safe. Now does that sound like someone that you can’t trust?” Manny questioned him.
“I guess not,” Colin replied a little calmer. “I can’t help but be a little cautious. Do you want me to check out people’s histories before I say if I trust them or not?”
Manny just smirked and shook his head. “If it makes you feel better, than go ahead. I’m just saying that you should judge a book by its cover. Listen to what your instinct is telling you to do. As angels, we have the ability to have a good instinct as to the intentions of people and what they will do. It takes time to use it efficiently, but in time you’ll get the hang of it,” he said putting a hand on his shoulder.
“Have you ever had your instinct lead you wrong?” Colin said softly, his gaze never leaving Jenny’s form. He gazed softly at her as the doctor went about the room, and she fell asleep once more.
“Once,” Manny said sadly. Colin broke his gaze away from Jenny and turned to look over at Manny.
He hung his head, as if in shame and shook it. “I was in charge of a young girl named Summer. She was the nicest girl that I had ever taken care of. She wasn’t your typical teenager, always talking on the cell phone, or just lazing about,” he said, his voice trembling, but yet he had a smile on his face as he remember her. “Summer would do things, take action. She’d volunteer at the local soup kitchen once a week, go out of her way to help her neighbors and friends. Everyone that knew her loved her, and even people who didn’t know her were somehow touched by her.”
His smile turned to a frown, as he came to the hard part. “One night for her eighteenth birthday, her friends took her out to a club. I was attentive the whole time, watching over her ever so carefully, because you never know what could happen at a night club. Everything was going fine until she bumped into her.”
His voice dripped with venom, recalling the girl, which was unusual because angels aren’t supposed to have hateful feelings towards others. “When I first saw her, I thought nothing of it. She looked normal, with regular clothes I guess they wear. I personally didn’t like her, same as not liking anyone else who was there that night besides her friends. When the girl asked her to join them, I let her go, because my instinct told me that everything would be okay.”
Manny paused as a lonely tear slid down his cheek. “I followed Summer and the new girl to make sure she was okay. She was led to a backroom, where the girl had a few friends with her, and I felt my gut turn. But to me I felt that the girl was okay, so I let her continue. I should have gotten her out of there soon as I felt my gut kick in.”
“They started talking, and gave her a water to drink. She drank the water, and then she started getting dizzy, and passed out. The guys had put some kind of drug into her water to make her pass out. But little did they know, they put too much of the drug into the drink and it ended up killing her. It wasn’t her time yet. She was supposed to live on until her late 80’s, and become the wife of a future president. If only my instinct was working when I saw that girl, Summer would still be alive.”
Manny finally broke down into tears after finishing his story. His shoulders slumped, as his breathing came out in ragged breaths, shoulders heaving up and down as he sobbed his heart out. Colin put his arm around Manny’s shoulder, and just stood there for Manny’s comfort.
