“I know that much,” she said, a small smile appearing on her face. “But what I don’t get is what I have to pull through. How bad exactly was the accident?”
“It was really bad Jen,” he said, voice trembling as tears threatened his eyes. “Here in your dreams, you’re absolutely fine. But out there in the real world, it’s horrible. Your whole ride side is in a cast. Dark bruises are all over your face, and then there is a bandage that runs across your head. It’s such a sad sight,” he said looking down.
“I’m just glad that you’re not hurt Colin,” she said trying to cheer him up.
“What makes you think that I wasn’t hurt?”
She had a big smile on her face as she continued. “Well, since when in my my dream, you must be in my room physically and talking to me, trying to help me through my time of need. How else would you be here silly?”
“You’re wrong Jen. I was hurt,” he said quietly.
“Then it must not have been that bad, was it?” she asked, the smile coming off her face.
Colin turned the swing so that now he was facing her. He placed his hand on her knee and gave it a squeeze. He was looking anywhere but in her eyes. “Jen, the accident was worse than you imagine. I’m here because I was killed in the accident.”
Jen removed his hand from her knee and stood up. Her body was trembling as if she were crying. “No, I don’t believe it. You can’t be dead, you just can’t,” she said shaking her head. “I’m only 17! I can’t take care of myself! What’s going to happen to me Colin? Why did you leave me? I should be the one that’s dead, since I was the one driving the car,” she cried, going into hysterics.
“Don’t talk like that. I don’t want you to be dead. Sh, it’ll get better, I promise,” he said standing up and giving her a hug.
“How can you say that it’ll get better?” she cried, shoving off his arms and flopping down into the dirt. “You’re leaving me all alone in this world where anything can happen. All of our relatives have died this past year, and now you’re dead. I have a feeling that I’m going to be next. How can you say that it’ll get better when you’re not here to protect me from being on someone’s hit list?”
“Jenny, I’ve been made your guardian angel. So I can still watch over you and help you through this. You just need to trust that I’ll be there for you. I vowed to you after mom and dad died that I would be there for you no matter what, and I can still keep that promise. You’re my baby sister, I would do anything for you,” he said crouching down to eye level.
“You’re my guardian angel?” she said as she calmed down a bit. Colin nodded his head and smiled as he wiped away the falling tears. “I knew that you would make it there. Do you have a halo or wings? Can you fly? What’s it like in heaven?” she began rambling.
“Whoa, slow down there,” he said laughing. “I don’t have a halo or wings yet. I don’t know if I’m going to get any either. But I do have a mentor named Manny who is showing me the ropes about being a guardian angel.”
Jenny’s eyes glazed over like a little kid who got a pony for their birthday. “You have a mentor? Can I meet him? What’s he like? Is he cool?”
“You certainly are asking a lot of questions,” Colin said laughing. “Manny, I guess that he’s cool, even though I just met him earlier today. He’s more laid back, always calling me kiddo and what-not. I think he’s just trying to calm me down and make me feel more at ease. I think that you two would get along just fine,” he said while patting her knee.
“I’m so glad to know that you’re watching over me from up there,” Jenny said softly as she stood up and pulled him into a hug. “If I really were alone, I think that I would end up going insane,” she said as a tear rolled down her cheek.
“Even though I will be watching over you, you must promise to also look out for yourself. If you truly are in danger, those who are after you will stop at nothing until you’re actually dead. I believe that the doctor is trying to work with the police on this, but still be careful. There are some crooked people out there, even cops,” he said looking at her seriously.
“I promise I will Colin. I love you big brother,” she said with a final hug.
“I love you too lil’ sis. I’ll try to keep in touch,” he said as a tear rolled down his cheek.
Jenny turned around, sitting back on the swing and started to swing back and forth, while once again picking up on the song. With one glance back at her, Colin turned around and walked away from the swings.
He closed his eyes, and once he opened them, once again he heard the steady beat of the monitor’s connected to her body. “Stay strong for me Jen,” he said as he placed a kiss onto her bandaged forehead.
“So how did it go?” Manny asked with concern.
Colin smiled as he glanced over at Manny who was standing over by the windowsill. “It actually went quite well. I told her that I’m watching over her, and even about you. She told me that she wants to meet you,” he said with a laugh.
Manny’s eyes lit up with amusement. “So, she wants to meet me, eh? Anything is possible, but not for the time being. After she is completely out of danger I’ll think about it. But for now we need to focus on her and what the cops are going to do about it.”
“Right,” Colin nodded his head in agreement. Then he heard muffled voices coming from outside of Jenny’s door. Turning, he saw police officers sitting around, looking very bored. That is until the doctor approached them.
Dr. Greeves walked briskly back into the hospital, hoping that the police were waiting for him when he got back. Usually he didn’t like getting involved in his patient’s cases, but there was just something about Jenny that made him want to help her.
As he stepped out of the elevator, the secretary beckoned him over to the counter. “The police are here to talk to you. They’re waiting over by her room, just like you requested,” she said as she nodded over towards Jenny’s room.
Dr. Greeves made his way over to Jenny’s room like a man on a mission. As he reached the room, he nodded his greetings to the officers. “Gentlemen, if you would please follow me,” he said as he opened her door and headed in the room. “Could you please excuse us?” he said to the nurse who was keeping watch over Jenny.
She nodded and quietly slipped out of the room, leaving Dr. Greeves and the two officers to their discussion.
“So, Dr. Greeves is it?” the taller of the two asked. He nodded as the officer acknowledged him. “What is it exactly that you would like to talk to us about?”
“You see the young lady lying on the bed there?” he asked gesturing to Jenny. “She was in a horrible car accident that left her like this, and her older brother was killed. We went through their records trying to find a relative so they could know and have someone to care for her. But what we found was that all of her relatives are dead. She is the only surviving member of her family, as this past year all the members of the family have been dying due to mysterious and unexplained causes,” he said, trying to make a statement.
“What exactly are we supposed to do about it?” asked the shorter blonde officer.
“I want you to start an investigation. Find out how exactly her family died, and if anyone has a grievance with the family. Find out something! I believe that she could be in danger and that someone is still after her. Is there any way that you could put her in the witness protection program?” he asked, trying to stay calm.
“We’re going to have to talk to our chief about this,” said the taller one as he glanced over at Jenny. “For now, don’t let anyone in this room unless they are on staff. Don’t tell anyone that she is here, and don’t talk about this with anyone else. If you have any questions, call the office and ask to talk to Sergeant Hooper. We’ll be in touch,” he said as he handed him a card, then turned and strode out of the room with the other officer.
“I don’t know what’s going on here Jenny, but I promise that I’ll take care of you the best I can,” Dr. Greeves vowed to himself.
