Chapter 1-

There was a steady beep in the ICU coming from a machine from one of the patient’s rooms. A steady rhythm of air being let in and out sounded throughout the room as the air bag took in air then let it out, letting the body it was attached to be able to breathe.

A young girl of 17 lied in the bed, unmoving. Bruises covered her face, with a bandage going across her forehead. Her whole right arm and leg had a cast around it. A nurse was examining her, checking her pupils and temperature.

“Poor girl. I wonder if she’ll ever wake up,” the nurse said to herself.

Suddenly, the girl’s eyes fluttered, and the fingers on her left hand began twitching uncontrollably. “Colin, where are you?” she murmured and was silent once again.

Startled by the sudden outburst by the girl, the nurse called for a doctor and then went on the girl’s right side. A doctor came running in. “What happened?”

“Her eyes fluttered for a brief moment, and she was murmuring his name.”

“Jenny? Can you hear me? This is Dr. Greeves,” he said as he examined her pupils. He backed up as she sat up, arms flaying about.

“Colin! Where are you? I need you. Don’t leave me,” Jenny said, starting to cry. Just as quick as she sat up, she fell back down again against the pillows, out cold.

“I want you to keep a 24 hour surveillance on her. Keep track of anything she does. I only want you to call me if she does anything violent. But for now give her a sedative to keep her calm,” Dr. Greeves said as he wrote down what Jenny just did on a clipboard.

“Will do Dr. Greeves. But what if she comes to and asks me about him?”

Dr. Greeves took a deep breath and looked at Jenny. “You’ll just have to tell her the truth. She at least deserves to know the truth. He was her brother after all. Her actually showing signs of consciousness are the best news I’ve had all day. Though her actions are quite unorthodox, it’s better than her just lying there.”

With one last glance at Jenny, Dr. Greeves exited into the hallway, stopping back at the secretary station before he went on break. “Do we have any word on any of the Jefferson’s living relatives?” he asked leaning over the counter.

“We found that they have no living relatives. Wait, now this is weird,” she said scrolling down the page. “It seems that over the course of the past year, their family has been dying out due to unexplained causes. Now Jenny is the only one left alive in her family.”

“Do me a favor and get the police on the line. I want to talk to them about this. I’ll be on break, so just ask them to wait over by her room until I get back,” he said heading for the back entrance of the hospital.

Colin was watching the doctor from nearby, listening to the conversation. He was talking to a secretary behind the counter about his family, or should he say, his non-existent family that has been mysteriously dying over the course of the past year.

He floated closer to them, since the secretary’s voice had dropped low. People walking by passed through him as he made his way over to the counter. “Do me a favor and get the police on the line. I want to talk to them about this,” he heard. Colin’s train of thought went blank.

“Police? Why does he want to talk to the police about this? It’s not like the stupid popo can do anything about it,” Colin huffed.

“Now kid, that may be a bit harsh,” Manny said while joining him. “Remember, you’re an angel now, so it’s not good to talk badly about others.”

“Not really. Just like the nurse said, my family died of unexplained causes. The police never looked into it before. Why would they now?” he huffed.

“Well, your sister is the last surviving member of your family. I think they may want to look into what caused the deaths of everyone in your family, and also try to keep Jenny safe. But who knows, I could be wrong,” Manny said with a shrug.

“Keep Jenny safe? You mean that she could still be in danger? What are the cops gonna do? I don’t trust them. Any one of them could be a crooked cop,” Colin said seething.

“Which is exactly why you are her guardian angel,” Manny reminded him.

“Can I go see her?” Colin asked, looking towards her room.

Manny stepped back and gestured towards the room. Colin glided over towards her room and went through the door. When he caught sight of her, his heart nearly broke and tears sprung to his eyes. He went over to her beside and attempted to place his hand on hers, but it went right through. He settled for just standing over her.

“I’m so sorry that this happened to you. You don’t deserve this. If only I protected you better, this wouldn’t have happened. But I’m here for you now Jen, I promise.”

“It wasn’t your fault kid. You did the best job that you could. Nothing could have stopped that car crash. But now you have the chance to make sure that nothing happens to her,” Manny said sympathetically.

“I just wish that I could really talk to her. To let her know that I’m watching over her, you know?” Colin said hanging his head.

“Actually, you can communicate with her,” Manny replied while standing in the corner.

Colin raised an eyebrow as he glanced over at his mentor, an eager expression making its way onto his face. “How so?”

“Just calm down kiddo,” Manny laughed while gliding to the opposite side of where Colin was standing. “When people dream, they are susceptible to receiving telepathic messages. Just lightly touch your hand to her forehead and clear all your thoughts. You will then be able to see her thoughts and dreams.”

Colin gave him a look of disbelief. “How can I place my hand on her forehead if when I placed my hand on hers earlier, it went right through?”

“There are certain places where we can touch that the living can actually feel. Like on their forehead so we can come to them in dreams, or on their shoulder to give them a feeling of reassurance. Otherwise when we touch them, they just get a chill. Watch,” he said as he brushed a hand over her arm. Jenny’s reaction to his touch was a slight shiver as her eye lids fluttered.

“You see, all she did was shiver when I touched her. Now go ahead and try communicating with her,” Manny said encouraging him on.

With a quivering hand, Colin slowly and gently placed his hand on her forehead. He closed his eyes and cleared all thoughts like Manny told him to do. A moment later, he opened his eyes and the sight before him was one that he had seen many times as a kid. This was the park that his mother always took him and Jenny to when she didn’t have work.

As he walked closer to the playground, he could hear a light and happy tune being sung softly. Following the voice, he was led to the swings where he found Jenny sitting with her back towards him as she slowly swung back and forth. He smiled as her heard her singing the song she always sang when she needed cheering up.

“She says you’ve got to hold on, to what you’ve got. It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not. We’ve got each other, and that’s a lot for love. We’ll give it shot,” her voicing the words, drifting through the air.

“Whoa, we’re halfway there. Whoa-oh! Livin on a prayer,” Colin joined in singing with her, taking the swing next to her.

Jenny smiled over at him as he sat down, but Colin could tell by the look in her eyes that she was anything but happy. He just held her hand, waiting for her to tell him when she was ready to.

“I’ve been so sacred Colin,” she said, her voice wavering as she looked out in front of her. “I know that right now I’m dreaming, but whenever I wake up, I’m in the hospital. You know how much I hate hospitals, having to spend basically the whole past year in and out, visiting everyone.”

“I know how much you do Jen. I have the same feeling. But the quicker that you pull through, the sooner you can leave that horrible place,” he said trying to soothe her.

“The quicker I pull out of what? Colin, what’s going on?” she said loudly, the fear evident in her voice.

“You don’t remember?” he asked her as she shook her head. He rubbed the back of his head, unsure of how to proceed. “Listen Jen, what I am about to tell will most likely upset you, but please be strong. We were in a car accident.”
