The car ride home between Dan and Caiden was silent. Caiden was still angry with Dan for taking out Carlee, and Dan didn’t want to egg Caiden on any further. Once the two got home and stepped into the house, Caiden couldn’t hold it on anymore.
“How could you! You knew that I like her!” Caiden said in a rage as he threw his back pack across the room.
“You took too long to ask her. Besides, you’ve liked her for how long but yet you’ve never asked her out?” Dan shouted back getting in his face.
“There have been complications,” Caiden said, gritting his teeth. “Besides, I didn’t know that she was single again. If I did, I would have asked her before she fell prey to you.”
“What do you mean before she fell prey to me? Are you saying that I am not to be trusted? Just remember that I’m older than you Caiden.”
“Being older doesn’t mean a thing. I could take you on eyes closed and a hand tied behind my back. If you do anything to hurt her, I promise that you’ll regret it and I will no longer call you my brother.” Caiden pushed Dan on to the floor and stormed up to his room.
Moments later Colleen entered the room. “Danny, what just happened here?”
“Mom, stop calling me Danny. I told you it’s now either just Dan, or D. Danny is just too childish,” Dan whined.
“Fine, Dan. I want to know what happened here. I just heard yelling and I can sense that you’re mad. Now tell me what happened.” Colleen scolded him with that scold all mothers can pull off.
“Caiden and I had an argument,” Dan said sighing.
“What about?”
“A girl at school. She’s one of the most popular girls. Caiden has always liked her but never did anything about it. She is single now so I asked to take her out on a date Friday. Caiden found out and now he’s jealous of me.”
Colleen sat down on a couch, thinking it over carefully. “This girl wouldn’t happen to be Carlee Mitchell, would it?” Dan was silent, telling her all she needed. “Dan, I don’t think that you going on a date with Carlee is such a good thing.”
“Why not? I have the right to date whoever I want,” Dan protested.
“I know you do. But your brother is a, well you know. You should read a story about them sometime. Vampires have this thing called a Beloved. Read and then you’ll know why your brother is making such a big fuss over this,” she said placing a hand on his shoulder.
“It’s not fair though. So if I happen to really like a girl, I end up not allowed to because of my brother? This is stupid. I don’t care if he has this thing for her. I’m going on the date with her on Friday whether people like it or not.” Dan quickly left the room, leaving Colleen there by herself to think it out.
“Boys, what can you do with them?” she laughed aloud. “If Carlee really is Caiden’s Beloved, and Dan dates her, this won’t turn out pretty .It would be fine if it was another guy dating her, but when the other guy is your own brother… I hope that those two don’t destroy each other over a girl. I’m starting to get annoyed with vampires. Particularly one that lives in the basement of this house,” she thought to herself. “I don’t think Caiden needs help anymore, and ever since his wife and kids moved in here, it’s been so hectic! Hopefully he can leave soon. Sure, there’s enough room, but there is too much testosterone under one roof.”
That Friday, Dan ended up going on the date with Carlee. Everyday leading up to that day, Caiden sulked around, and would not go anywhere near Carlee or Dan, not matter how hard Carlee tried to talk to him. Even in study hall when Caiden would go to the library and Carlee went there and sat at his table, he would not even acknowledge her presence.
On the date, Carlee just sat there fidgeting while Dan chattered away. She just pushed the food around on her plate when it arrived, not bothering to eat any. Not being able to keep in her thoughts anymore, she suddenly blurts out, “What’s wrong with your brother? He never talks to me anymore. Did I do something wrong?”
Dan gets a scowl on his face and mumbles, “Stupid brother. He’s not even here and he’s messing up my date.”
“What was that? Dan, I value your brother’s friendship a lot, and him not talking to me worries me. Please help me fix it Dan,” she said placing a hand over his.
He let out a sigh and took his hand out from under hers and ran it through his hair. “I have a question for you first. Do you like me?”
Carlee raised an eyebrow at his question. “Of course I like you. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here with you.”
“I meant do you like, like me? And if so how much?” His eyes searched hers, desperate to find his answer.
She let out a sigh before continuing. “To be truthful, I only like you as a friend. But I don’t get what this has to do with Caiden not talking to me. Wait,” she said thinking hard.
“Carlee, Caiden isn’t talking to you because he’s jealous that I’m the one going on this date with you. He really likes you. But the problem is, is that I really like you too. So since you went on this date with me, he didn’t want to be around you or see us together. That’s why he hasn’t been talking to you.”
Carlee was silent as she processed the information. “I really don’t know what to say about all of this. But right now I hope that you’re not expecting me to choose between you two. I can’t do that. It would be unfair to both of you.”
“I figured that this would happen, however much I didn’t want it to. I was going to ask you to be my girlfriend, and now because of this, I can’t. Just promise me that you’ll remember that I’m the one who asked you on a date first,” Dan pleaded with her.
“I can promise you that, but I can’t promise anything else. Let’s just finish off our date and go on from there, shall we?” she said trying to ease the tension.
“Sounds like a plan to me. So tell me, do you like cheese?” he joked.
The whole weekend, Caiden avoided Dan, thinking that Dan and Carlee were now official, and he didn’t want to hear Dan gloat about it. The next day at school he thought that he would have to deal with gossip about the school’s newest couple, but he heard nothing of it. Not of Dan and Carlee anyways.
At lunch Caiden sat in the library, being cautious incase Carlee went and sat at the table with them. You could never be too careful. All day he was able to avoid walking in the same hallway as her, but he knew that he would be unable to avoid her the last period of the day.
Once again for study hall Caiden went to the library and he was followed by Carlee who once again sat down at the table with him. Just as he picked up his book, he heard her hiss to him.
“Caiden, we really need to talk. Please?”
He nodded at her and stood up and headed to a corner in the back so they could have privacy with her close on his heels. He stopped in the corner and leaned up against the bookcase looking at her. “So what did you really need to talk about,” he said in a bored tone.
“Dan told me why you have been ignoring me.” His eyes flashed in annoyance. He went to speak but she cut him off. “Why didn’t you tell me that you like me? Did it ever occur to you that I like you as well?”
“But what about your date with Dan? Didn’t that mean anything?”
“Like I told Dan, I only like him as a friend. How could I like him when you are the one that I want? But I promised that I wouldn’t choose either of you yet. I want to spend some time together with you before we decide on anything,” she said looking into his eyes.
“I would like that, getting to know each other more. Maybe we could even spend more time discussing vampires,” he said with amusement. Carlee’s eyes lit up at the mention of them.
“You mean that you’re actually interested in them?” she asked with eagerness.
“I guess that you could say that it is a topic that I am very well-educated in,” he said with a smirk.
“I’ll have to take you up on that some time. It sure would be very interesting to talk with someone else on their thoughts about them. Like if they exist or not, and talking about all the facts and myths. We should do this real soon,” she said, her eyes lit up with excitement.
“What are you two doing back here? Take your seats please,” the librarian said as she saw them talking in the corner.
“Yes ma’am,” they said together as she walked out of sight. They burst into giggles as soon as she was far enough away.
“Let’s go before we really get into trouble,” Carlee said turning away. “I’m beginning to like Caiden more and more each day. This could be serious one day, and it seems too good to be true. All I know right now is that I’m never going to let him go.”
Caiden followed behind, staring at the back of her head. “I’m never going to let you go either Carlee. I vow my life to that,” he thought as he sat down across from her and started working on his math homework before the final bell of the day rang.
I promised myself that I would not be upset, but yet I can't help it that I only recieved 2 rates on chap 21, when back when I first started this I had at least 15. I wonder where my old readers of this story is. I didn't tell anyone about this, so that might be why, but... eh, who cares. Its basically feels like a waste to write these and post them, but I want to see it finished, so... it's almost done, FINALLY.
and people, don't EVEN get started on the "you should write because you want to! It doesn't matter how many rates you get!" Some people only write to please YOU, the readers, and if they don't write because they want to, do you realize that you wouldn't have that story to read? And that some of the stories you read wouldn't be on here? so do the courteous thing, and RATE! girsh... sorry bout my rant, lol.
