A New Kind of Good *Chapter 5*
|
While Tristan drove along a path, I just kept my focus on the road, just staring at whatever we happened to pass. There were a few wooded areas, but not many. Most of it was wide open country. We just kept on a straight path for the most part, so I didn’t think that it would be too hard to find my way and drive back to the house, except that the steering wheel is on the other side of the car. That might be a little hard to get used to.
The silence was bugging me, since the radio in the car didn’t work all the way out here, and I didn’t know any of the songs over here either. Luckily I had my Ipod on me which fortunately did not end up in the lake with me this morning. I put in my headphones and scrolled through my list of songs, and decided to stop on “…To Be Loved” by Papa Roach.
When the song came to the chorus, I started jamming out to it. “ Whoa, I’ll never give in, Whoa, I’ll never give up, Whoa, I’ll never give in, and I just wanna be, wanna be loved,” I sang along, while bobbing with it.
Tristan just looked over at me and gave me an annoyed look.
“What?” I asked innocently while shrugging my shoulders. “I have to find some way to keep myself entertained. You’re not exactly good company,” I said as I looked out the window.
“I’m sorry if I bore you, but I think that focusing on your training is more important than fooling around.”
“I know that my training is important. But I don’t think it would hurt to loosen up a little while we’re still on the way there. Maybe if you loosened up a little, people wouldn’t think you’re so arrogant all the time,” I smirked.
He was silent for a minute. “Give me a side of the headphones,” he said letting out a sigh.
I grinned as I handed him a side. He snatched it out of my hand and put it into his ear. We just sat there for a moment listening to the music when I saw him finally crack a smile. On the inside, I was silently cheering that he finally smiled at something other than when he did it to mock me. It was a genuine smile too.
“What’s the name of the song?” he asked as he looked at me, clear interest was being expressed which surprised me.
“It’s called ‘…To Be Loved’ by Papa Roach. Do you like it?” I asked as we came to a hill and stopped.
“It’s ok,” he said as he stepped out of the car and his smile disappeared. What a shame, I liked him better when he smiled.
“So why did we stop at the bottom of the hill?” I asked while getting out of the car and following him as he took up off the hill.
“Because we are just going over the hill since the Stonehenge is on the other side. We really shouldn’t have the car near such a sacred site. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to walk.”
I had to speed walk to keep up with his long strides. “So, are you sure that you didn’t put food in the house?” I asked catching up to him.
“What are you talking about?” he asked as he stopped and looked at me.
“When I went into the kitchen earlier to get food, Jenna told me that there was no food anywhere in the house, and then when I opened the fridge, it was filled with food. And she checked it 15 minutes before I went in there,” I said crossing my arms.
“I didn’t do it, I would have made it clear that it was me if I did. I don’t think that it was the Guardians either, they would have told me if they did. I think you should check the food before you eat it to make sure that it’s safe. You never know, a demon or warlock could have done it somehow. Even though I don’t believe they have the know-how to do it,” he said as he laughed to himself.
As we continued up the hill, I put in my headphones and looked through my music for a good song to warm up to. I felt the adrenaline start to kick in as Trick Daddy’s song “Let’s Go,” made its way through my ears.
“What is with you and music anyways?” I heard him say in front of me.
“Music helps me focus, and depending on the song, it puts me in a mood to fight,” I said as we neared the top of the hill.
He was silent as he waited on the top of the hill for me to join him. As I caught up to him and looked down over the hill, my jaw literally dropped. When I did my training, I awoke and I was already down, so all I saw were the big giant stones forming a circle around us. Now I was over at it, and it was like something out of a story book.
About 10 yards away, the hill sloped up a little more, and there it was. Surrounding the giant stones was a slight mist. The sky was tinted a purple-blue, as if it was going to rain. I didn’t spot any dark clouds on the drive over here, so I was slightly miffed.
“Come on, we don’t have all day,” he laughed as he began striding towards the stones. I just grumbled as I followed after him, trying to catch up with his long strides.
As we came closer to the stones, I could feel the wind picking up. There was a large thunder crack above us as we were outside the circle. As I stepped into the circle, a streak of lightning shot up from the center of the circle. I could feel the electricity in the air, crackling as if there was something even bigger to come. But nothing ever did appear.
“Now that the show is over, we can begin,” he said putting a hang on my shoulder.
“What are we going to be working on today?” I asked as I removed his and from my shoulder and walked towards the center of the circle.
“I don’t really know, but we need to figure out a way to try and get your other powers to come out. Try jumping up and down.”
I just stopped and glared at him. “You can’t be serious.”
“You have any better ideas?” he asked with a raised eyebrow.
“No, but I think that jumping up and down is ridiculous,” I said as I crossed my arms.
“Come on, just do it,” he pleaded with me.
“Whatever.” I began jumping up and down, but nothing was happening. “You happy now?” I asked raising my hands in the air.
“You call that jumping? My grandma could have done better than that. If that is your best, we should just give up now.”
Oh how I hated him. “Are you trying to piss me off?” I said angrily while glaring at him.
“No, but you’re starting to get on my nerves with all of your complaining. No wonder Carrie didn’t think you were mature enough to handle your powers,” he said glaring back.
“Leave her out of this!” I yelled as I stomped my foot. There was a loud crack as I felt the earth move beneath my feet. I looked down and saw that there was a crack in the ground right underneath my foot, and it rippled out and got bigger as it was going to where Tristan stood.
He quickly stepped out of the way and the crack stopped. He looked over at me with shock. “Were you trying to kill me?”
“It was just an accident,” I said shrugging my shoulders. “Besides, you pissed me off, and I told you not to do that.”
“Aw, what a shame. I think you’re cute when you’re angry though,” he smirked.
Warning signs went off in my head. I can’t let him get that close to me, and those words were skating around the outside. I quickly threw a fireball at him to keep myself guarded, if only for a little while.
“What was that for?” he asked as he dodged it then looked at me with hurt in his eyes.
“I’m sorry, but I usually don’t trust men. And after what you said, I now have to keep my guard up around you,” I said crossing my arms.
“Why put you guard up around me? And after I saved your life this morning too. Maybe I should have just left you in that lake to drown,” he said coming closer to me.
“If I was dead, then who would you get to fight off the evil being?”
“We would have found a way. Can we just stop this fighting already? Just admit that you like me,” he said stopping in front of me.
“I don’t like you. Now back off,” I growled.
“You’re lying,” he said staring me down.
“I said back off!” I yelled as I made a motion to push him, and gusts of wind sent him flying backwards. “Why would I like such an arrogant and stubborn jerk like you!” No matter how attractive he was, I would never like him. That would be a bad idea anyways, seems how he is training me and it would most likely get in the way.
“I’m arrogant and stubborn? Well, at least I don’t get mad at every little thing, no matter how stupid it is,” he said standing up.
“I do not get mad at every little thing!” I hollered as I pounded my fists into the ground. There was a slight rumbling, and then the ground underneath him shot up, taking him with it. He was hanging onto the structure as he hung about 10 ft off the ground.
“You do too. You’re powers are linked to your emotions, and what you did just now was because you’re angry and can’t control your temper,” he said easing himself off of it.
“I wouldn’t lose my temper if you didn’t provoke me so much,” I spat back at him.
“I guess that’s just one more thing that we’re going to have to work on. I think that’s going to be the hardest thing to do though,” he said laughing.
“You think I can’t control my temper? Just watch, I can do it,” I smirked.
“Only time will tell. Now let’s get back to training,” he said looking around. “Um, I think before we leave, you’re going to have to fix this.”
“Fix what?”
“Look around. There’s a huge crack in the ground, and a large mound of dirt is sticking out of the ground. They weren’t here before, so you’ll have to find a way to fix them,” he smirked. “It’s not the Stonehenge with these new additions. It totally ruins it.”
“But how am I supposed to do that oh mighty one?” I said sarcastically.
“I don’t know. Just start trying something. You never know what could happen.”
“Isn’t that the truth,” I muttered as I walked over to the tall mound. I put my hands on it and started pushing down on it. To my amazement, it actually started going back into the ground.
“Wow, it actually works. Give her a gold star,” he said slowly clapping his hands.
I just shook my head and kept pushing it into the ground. I pushed it down until there was only about a foot of dirt sticking out of the ground. I kicked it over and as I went to pick it up, it sort of levitated off the ground. With a smirk, I sent it flying at him.
“What the hell are you doing?” he yelled as he jumped out of the way. It splattered against one of the stones that was behind him.
“If you would keep your comments to yourself, I would leave you alone,” I smirked. I was suddenly feeling weak, so I sat down. Lifting that dirt was actually heavy.
“All tired out, are we?” he asked slowly coming closer to me.
“Just shut up,” I grumbled as I closed my eyes.
I heard music blasting through my ears since I forgot that I had my Ipod in the whole time. I let out a sigh, since I could have been listening to that instead of his snide comments. I felt a thud next to me as “Eye Of The Tiger” by Survivor started.
“What do you think you’re doing?” I barked.
“I’m enjoying you finally shutting your mouth. And by the way, I decided that I’m going to be stopping over for dinner,” he said with amusement.
“Suit yourself. Though I have no idea why you would want to join Jenna and I for dinner. Unless you want to get food poison,” I said laughing.
“Actually no. I have my reasons,” he said, and I could hear the smirk in his voice. There was a rustle of the grass as I heard him stand up. “Come on, time to get back to training.”
I opened my eyes and saw him holding out a hand to me. “Give me five more minutes. I haven’t even been lying here for that long,” I said as I rolled over.
“No, you’re getting up now,” he said as he lifted me up as if I was nothing. Did I mention how much I hated him?
“You’re so mean,” I whined as I began stretching.
“I try,” he said giving me a wink.
For the rest of training, we just practiced on focusing my other powers that I had, and trying to control them better. He set up dummies, and I threw fireballs at them. Tristan actually kept quiet for most of the time, so we didn’t argue anymore. It was about 5:00 when we finally stopped for the day.
“Good job Alania. I will see you later,” he said as he got ready to poof off.
“Why don’t you ride back in the car with me to see that I get back ok, and then poof off?” I asked. I wasn’t really sure that I could make it back by myself.
“Sorry, that would take too much time. You’re a big girl, I believe you can do it,” he said with a wink and then disappeared.
“I hate you!” I yelled into the air. I walked back down the hill and got into the car. I ended up getting back to the house fine by myself.
As I got out of the car and walked up the sidewalk, I heard a commotion coming out of the house. “Laney! We have a visitor!” I heard Jenna yell.
I hastily ran into the house, thinking that a demon somehow found out where we were, but when I went into the living room, I started laughing. There was a man, who was wearing a silken vest, along with matching pants. He turned to look at me when he noticed I was there.
“Good evening miss. Jordan the Genie at your service,” he said taking a bow.
