A New Kind of Good *Chapter 4*
|
We drove many miles, passing by many farms and fields before we came to a little dirt road onto which we turned.
“How much longer until we’re there?” Jenna asked impatiently.
“I’d say that there is only about another 10 minutes until we get to the house ma’am,” Tristan replied to her in an accent. We had already been traveling for over 2 hours, and we were getting quite restless.
Exactly 10 minutes later, we pulled up to a two story cottage. It was like the ones that you read about in stories. There was a tree one each side of the driveway that stood over 100 feet tall, as it branches drooped almost to the ground. A different variety of flowers went in a circle around the willows, the different colors making them stand out.
After we got out of the car with our luggage in tow, we followed Tristan up the cobblestone pathway that led to the house. On either side of the pathway, little torches were lined up about 2 feet away from each other, with rose bushes in between them. This was definitely like a cottage in a fairytale.
There was only one thing missing though. When I looked up at the roof, I laughed. Sure enough, there was smoke coming out of the chimney.
“What is so funny Laney?” Jenna asked as she turned to look at me.
“It’s just that this whole house seems like something out of a fairytale. And then I looked at the roof and saw the smoke coming out of the chimney, and that just set me off,” I said as I tried to calm down.
I was holding in my giggles as we walked into the house and set down our luggage. I glanced around at where I would be staying for whoever knows how long. As my glance swept over the room, I noticed the fireplace, but what I saw confused me, as the fire was not even lit. I quickly ran outside and glanced up at the chimney again, making sure that I was hallucinating when I saw the smoke just moments ago. Sure enough, there was smoke coming out of the chimney. I walked back inside, with a puzzled look on my face, because the fire was still not lit.
“What’s with the look?” she asked as she was walking around the room.
“I just think that it’s odd that there is smoke coming out of the chimney, but there is no fire lit in the fireplace,” I said as I went and stood by the fireplace.
“Did I forget to mention that this is a magical house?” the ‘cabbie’ said as he took off his hat and looked earnestly at us.
“What a surprise,” I said sarcastically.
“You look familiar,” Jenna said to him as she stepped closer to him while peering at him very closely.
“Don’t be silly, you’ve never seen me before,” he said nervously as he backed away.
“Cut the crap,” I said as I pulled his hat away from him. “Jenna, this is really Tristan, the one who has been training me. He was also the one who gave us the tickets, proclaiming to be named Trevor.”
He huffed as he took his back from me. “Yes, I am Tristan, her mentor for the time being to help her learn what her powers are, and to help them grow and develop properly. But you didn’t have to out me to your friend,” he said while glaring at me.
“I’m sorry, I couldn’t help it,” I said smiling sweetly.
“Well, no matter, I had best be going. We have a big day ahead of us tomorrow,” he said giving me a devilish grin.
“Wait, it’s late, you should stay the night here,” Jenna offered.
“I don’t need sleep. Oh, just pick a room to stay in. Oh, and here are the keys to the car,” he said as he tossed them to me and then poofed away.
“Wow,” was all Jenna said as her mouth gaped open.
I stretched my arms and yawned. “Well, I’m going upstairs to pick out a room and then go to bed. Night Jenna,” I said as I started up the stairs.
“Night Laney. I think I’m just gonna stay down here for a while and just look around,” she called after me.
“Alright,” I yelled back. I opened the first door that was on the right, but it wasn’t a bedroom. “I found the bathroom!” I called out laughing.
I kept on going down the hall. I peered inside one of the rooms on the left hand side, but there was nothing special about it. I kept going until I got to the end of the hall, and went inside the room that was on the right.
I walked in, and decided that I would claim it as my room. It was big enough, and there was a canopy bed in there. Plus, it had a view of the back of the house. It had a sliding door that I saw led out to a balcony.
Curious, I slid open the door and stepped out onto the balcony. I closed the door behind, and when I looked out over it, my jaw dropped. It was such a majestic sight. There was a small lake, which was now covered with a light mist. In the middle of the lake was a tall willow. It only stood about 50 feet out of the water, so many of its branches were grazing the water.
As I was leaning out gazing at the lake, I saw a pair of swans swimming out from under the branches of the tree. While they were making their way to the shore, a herd of deer came by and stopped to take a drink.
When the deer walked away, I decided that it was time to head to jump in bed. I closed the sliding door so that the breeze would be able to come in through the screen door. I lied down on the canopy bed and drifted off into sleep.
Hours later, I was tossing and turning. I woke up and saw that it was still dark outside, as I didn’t know what time it was due to the different location. I kept tossing and turning still and couldn’t fall back asleep no matter how hard I tried. I got up and decided to head out back and sit by the pond.
I put in my Ipod and just sat on a rock, staring out into the lake. The song playing was “Animal I Have Become,” by Three Days Grace. Listening to that song always helped be able to calm down and relax. Steam was coming off of the lake as dragonflies darted around, looking for possible food.
I ended up drifting into sleep as I sat on the rock. I woke up when I felt my body suddenly get wet. I must have fallen into the lake. I was about to swim back up when I felt something pulling on my leg. I think my leg was caught in the weeds or something. I tried hard, but I just couldn’t seem to break loose. My eyes were blinking, and suddenly all I saw was black.
I awoke when I felt lips on mine, blowing air into my my. They removed their lips and began pumping their hands on my chest. I coughed as water came up and into my mouth.
“Damn woman,” I heard the voice mutter. I looked and saw Tristan leaning over me, looking at me with concern in his eyes. “You’re lucky that I watch you closely, otherwise you’d be dead right now.”
“I’m sorry,” I said softly. “I tried to come back up, but there was something holding onto my leg and it wouldn’t let go, and I lost consciousness from the lack of air,” I said looking away.
“I’m sorry,” he said sitting me up and pulling me into a hug. “You’re alive now, and that’s all that matters. You really had me worried,” I heard him whisper the last part.
I just sat there embracing in the warmness of his hug, trying to fend off the shivers that I got from being wet at this time in the morning. “I think I’m going to go change clothes and actually try to get some sleep,” I said standing up. “Oh, and would you happen to know what the time is here? I haven’t updated the time, due to the change and all.
“Sure, the time is 5:50,” he said said standing up too.
I brought my arms in close against me and started to walk away. I stopped and turned around, and saw him staring after me. “Tristan, thanks,” I said smiling at him before walking back up to the house.
“Anytime,” he called after me. I heard a poof and knew that he must have left.
I think that somehow his charm was starting to rub off on me. He really isn’t such a bad, arrogant guy when it comes down to it. I was starting to get used to seeing him now and again, but I didn’t know if relying on him would be a good or bad thing. I usually kept away from men because every one of them that were in my life ended up betraying me somehow.
For instance, my dad ran out on my mom when I was only 4 years old. Then my Uncle was a warlock and did evil things, so we couldn’t exactly trust him either. And then the last boyfriend that I had, which was about 4 years ago, stole everything from my apartment, and then tried to kill me. So you’ll excuse me if I don’t open up warmly to men.
I went into the house, and tried to quietly trudge up the stairs, hoping the the dripping water off of my body wouldn’t make too much of a noise and wake up Jenna. I made it up to my room, and quickly changed clothes and jumped into bed. I made a quick time change to my watch that somehow survived my dip in the lake. With thoughts of him floating around my head, I quickly drifted off into sleep.
When I awoke later, the sun was shining in through the door. I took a glance at my watch, and I did a double take. My watch read 2:30 in the afternoon. There was no way I could have slept in that late. I quickly got out of bed and walked down the stairs into what I believed to be the living room. Sure enough, there were clocks on the wall that said it was 2:30.
“It’s about time you woke up,” Jenna said entering the room.
“I can’t believe that I actually slept in that long,” I said sitting down on one of the couches as she sat down next to me. “I just had a bad night,” I said while rubbing my forehead.
“With the jet lag and all, I wouldn’t blame you. I’ve only been up for a few hours, but I do know that it’s in the afternoon already.”
“How’d you know that?” I asked her, giving her a questioning look.
“I’m not that stupid, gosh,” she said giving me a disbelieving look. “I looked at the clocks on the walls that just happened to be here. And plus, I went on my computer earlier and changed the time zone we were in, and it gave me the time,” she said looking proud of herself.
I just laughed and stood up. “I never said that you were stupid Jen. But sometimes your actions led me to that conclusion,” I said as I made for the kitchen. “But for now, I’m going to see what kind of food we have here.”
“I was just in there, and the cupboards were empty,” she said standing up and following me into the kitchen.
“How are we supposed to live here when there is no food, and we don’t even know where the nearest food market is?” I asked as I opened the refrigerator door. But when I looked in there, it was filled with food. “I thought that you said there was no food in here?” I asked, turning to her after taking out a jar of pickles to snack on.
“There wasn’t any when I checked 15 minutes ago,” she said as she opened up a cupboard and revealed a bunch of different cereals and pasta noodles.
The name of one person popped into my mind as how the cupboards and fridge were filled now, but weren’t filled when Jenna checked merely 15 minutes ago. “Tristan,” I muttered to myself, shaking my head and smiling.
As if on cue, there was a knock at the door. I quickly went over and opened it, and saw him standing there, looking impatient. “Get the keys to the car, it’s time to go.”
“Go where?” I asked as I stepped back and he entered the house.
“Where do you think? Now hurry up, you’ve wasted enough time already by sleeping in so late,” he demanded.
“But I haven’t eaten yet! I’m going to need my strength if I’m going to be training,” I whined as I swiped the keys off an end table, while turning to face him.
“Fine, get a snack or something and bring it with you. You should also grab a couple bottles of water to bring with you. While you were training in a spiritual state, your body wasn’t worn out physically. But since you will be there physically this time, it’s going to take more of your energy, and I would rather be safe than sorry. I’ll be waiting in the car,” he said as he turned around and went out the door.
I quickly ran into the kitchen and grabbed a couple water bottles from the fridge. I then searched through the cupboards to find a suitable snack when I settled on a pack of peanut butter crackers. “I am going out for a while. I’ll be back later,” I said to Jenna as I went past her in a rush as she just looked at me quizzically.
As I ran outside, I had a cracker sticking out of my mouth. I went to get in the car, and saw that he was in the driver’s seat, so I went around and got inside the passenger side. “So how far away is it?” I asked as I gave him the keys and buckled myself up.
“We’ll get there when we get there. Pay attention so you can drive back and I can just leave when you do,” he said annoyed.
“Whatever,” I said as he backed out of the driveway and headed down the road. “Oh, and thanks,” I said giving him a quick glance.
“For what?” he asked giving me a questioning look.
“Aren’t you the one who filled up the house with food?”
“No,” he said as he looked me straight in the eyes.
I leaned back in my seat, staring out at the road ahead. Who could have possibly filled the house with food if he didn’t?

I'm sorry that I haven't posted anything from this until now. My weekend was really busy, and then the past couple days I had a slight case of writer's block, but I was fortunately able to get this chapter done. I can't post this story every single day, since to get my chapters the length that they are, I write for hours, and sometimes even then I can't come up with anything on the time I have to write.
I appreciate honest critiques. I want to be able to better this story, so maybe one day it could get published, so tell me what you think would help to make it better! and also, if you want to be kept posted, please rate! It's common courtesy. Would you really want to keep people posted on your work if they didn't vote for you?
