Just a Dare ~Chapter 25~: The Final Chapter

Romance Created on 5-25-08 Views(214) Story Rating G

I remember having flashes of being in the hospital. There were many nurses rushing in and out and around where I was.

I saw a guy dressed in a bright green smock. “She has a large blood clot in the upper right hemisphere of her head. We need to remove it before it gets bigger and cuts off all blood flow to the brain.”

Someone put something over my mouth, and I was being pulled into a deep sleep. I vaguely remember sometime later, someone spoke again.

“The blood clot was successfully removed. But she had such trauma to her head, we don’t know if she’ll wake up. It’s up to her if she’s strong enough to live or not. We’ll have to wait and see.” I was once again in blackness.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back at home in my bed in the house that I was sharing with Kim. I jumped when the door opened and Kim walked in. She looked odd, because her shirt was blood red, and she was wearing a pink skirt. She looked really pale too.

“Kim? What happened? Why am I in bed?” I asked her.

“Melanie, we were in a car accident. How are you feeling?” she asked putting a hand on my forehead. Her hands were really cold.

“I feel fine. But what happened at the accident? Why don’t I remember it?” I asked.

“You had bad trauma to your head, which resulted in short term memory loss. The accident was two weeks ago,” she said sadly.

“Wow. How are you feeling after that? And how is Joyce?” I asked her.

Kim started crying. “Melanie, Joyce is dead. When the other car crashed into us, the force of it broke the window. Somehow one of the glass shards managed to cut her neck and she bled to death before the ambulance got there.”

“No,” I said angrily. “She can’t be dead,” I said getting louder.

Kim just shook her head and cried.

“No!” I wailed. “Why!” I sobbed, holding my legs and rocking back and forth on my bed.

Kim ran out of the room and I just sat there in shock. I was numb from the pain of the loss. I heard a knock on the door, but I ignored it. “Mel, Joe wants to see you.”

The door opened and Joe walked in. He came over and sat on the bed in front of me. He just sat there and stared at me in silence for a good 15 minutes. “Mel, snap out of it. You’re strong, and you can fight this. Please, we all need you to be strong right now. Don’t give up on us,” he said as he reached out and held my hand. He sat there for another 20 minutes before he patted my hand and left.

I was still sitting there in shock an hour later when Kim came back in. She was dressed all in black, with high heels and blood red lipstick. “Mel, I’m going out. I have my cell if you need me,” she said standing at the foot of my bed.

“Where are you going?” I asked as I stopped rocking back and forth.

“A place where you don’t belong,” she scoffed as she left my room.

I heard the front door open and then slam shut as she went outside. The engine revved, and then the tires squealed as she took off down the drive.

“What the hell is wrong with her?” I thought as I got up off my bed and went over to turn the radio on. When I turned it on, all that there was, was static. I turned it to a different station, but all I got again was static. I tried every single station but I only got static.

Having had enough of that, I turned on the TV, but the picture didn’t want to come in, no matter what channel I put it on. I gave up and made some macaroni and cheese.

Afterwards, I went and lied down on my bed for a while. I ended up falling asleep, and my dream scared me. I saw Joyce in it.

“Melanie, please be strong, you have to get through this,” she told me as we sat in the backyard on our swing bench.

“What if I’m not strong enough to get through it?” I asked as I started to cry.

“Don’t talk like that,” she said sternly. “You are strong enough, don’t ever doubt it. There are many people counting on you to be strong. I believe in you. Do it for me,” she said taking my hand, willing me to believe.

“I’ll try,” I said giving her a feeble smile.

“Good. Now, I just need you to wake up,” she said as she faded away.

“Why do I need to wake up?” I asked, but there was no one there.

“You need to wake up because we need you,” said a voice.

I looked around to see where it was coming from, when I suddenly saw Darrin standing in front of me.

“I told you that I would always be here for you,” he said as he sat down beside me. “I love you so much Mel, and I know that you are strong enough to get through this,” he said pulling me to him and kissing my forehead.

“I don’t know how I’ll get through this,” I said crying into his shoulder.

“You can do it. I believe in you. I’ll be right here beside you the whole time. If you ever need me, just look beside you and I’ll be there. Please just do me a favor and wake up,” he said holding me tightly.

“What good will happen if I wake up? I’ll just be alone with Kim,” I sobbed.

“Just trust me,” he said fading away.

I woke up with a start. Why does everyone keep telling me to wake up? I sat there on my bed, thinking about my dream when I heard the front door get slammed open. I walked out of my bedroom and saw Kim staggering in the living room.

“Kim, do you need any help?” I asked as she fell onto the couch. She didn’t answer me, so I walked over towards her. I watched as she just lied there, breathing in and out.

I was about to go back to my room, when I heard her speak. It was barely audible, but I could still hear it. “Why are you still here? You don’t belong here with me. Leave while you have the strength to do it.”

“You don’t want me here?” I asked with tears in my eyes.

She nodded and rolled over. I couldn’t believe she was telling me to get out. After we have lived together for over 4 years, she wanted me gone. You would think that she wouldn’t want to be alone.

“But Kim, I don’t know where to go.”

“Anywhere but here. You don’t belong here,” she whispered. She then began snoring, and I knew that it was a lost cause.

I silently walked back to my room, dragging my feet along the way. What was I supposed to do now? I couldn’t just pack up and leave and then show up at home unannounced. I guess that I would just call home tomorrow and tell them what my plans were.

When I got to my room, I sat down on my bed. “Don’t give up. You can pull through this, I know you can,” I heard a voice whisper. I looked around and there was no one there.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. “Come on Mel, just calm down. You were just hearing things.” At that moment, I thought of Darrin, and when I opened my eyes, I saw that Darrin was there right next to me.

“Darrin? How are you here?” I asked surprised.

“I told you, all you need to do is look next to you and I’ll be there. I’m always there, even if you can’t always see me. We need you to come back home Mel,” he said looking at me sadly.

“Why do I need to come back home?” I asked confused.

“We all miss you, and if you come back, we can take care of you,” he said, looking intensely into my eyes.

“But Kim,” I said looking at the door. “She needs me here.”

“Mel, there is nothing you can do for Kim. She’s already gone. There’s nothing that anyone can do for her,” he said.

I just sighed. “What do mean she’s gone? She’s still alive, and she still seems sane. I need to help her so she doesn’t do anything bad.”

“Melanie, you don’t belong here. If you stay here for much longer, it’s possible that you’ll never come back again. Just please come back,” he pleaded with tears in his eyes.

“I really want to go back, but I don’t know if I can.”

“You can. All you have to do is wake up,” he said as he kissed me.

I was going to kiss him back, but he disappeared. “But I am awake. I must have hurt my head pretty bad if I keep seeing and hearing things,” I said to myself. “Just wake up,” I heard a voice say, followed by someone chuckling.

“I am awake,” I muttered before I lied down on my bed. I quickly fell asleep to the sound of the clock ticking on the wall.

My dream started out fine. I was back at the party with Kim and Joyce. One moment I was laughing with them, the next I was driving down the road. It went in slow motion as I was driving around a curb and I was suddenly hit on my side of the car. I looked and saw a blinding light from the headlight of the other vehicle, which turned out to be some sort of truck. I felt the force of the impact, and then I woke up.

I was covered in sweat as I sat up. I looked over at the clock and saw that it was 4:15 in the morning. “Wake up,” I heard a voice as soft as the wind whisper.

“Shut up, I am awake,” I muttered as I rubbed my face. I got up out of bed to go get a drink of water. I passed the living room and Kim was no longer on the couch. I quickly drank my water and then went back to bed. I kept having the dream about the car accident, but I would get to the same point and then stop.

I woke up at 9:00, frustrated. Why couldn’t I remember the rest of what happened? I know that there is something important to remembering it, but what?

As soon as Kim woke up, I was going to ask her some questions about it. I waited for her in the living room. She finally came out of her room at 11 o’clock. She looked surprised to see me there for some reason.

“Kim, what’s going on?” I asked her as she came over to me.

“It must be your short term memory,” she said sitting next to me.

“No it’s not,” I said shaking my head. “I remember everything from yesterday. Why did you tell me to leave?” I asked hurt.

“You don’t belong here,” she said looking away.

“And why not?” I asked angrily.

“You just don’t. Not after what happened,” she said sadly.

“What are you talking about?” I said confused.

“The accident!” she screamed. “Don’t you get it? Didn’t you notice how pale I am, and how cold my hands are?” she asked looking at the ground.

“Kim, let me help. We can get through this together,” I said taking her hand. She was right, it was cold as an ice cube.

“Melanie, just shut up. You need to wake up. I’m dead! You still have the chance to live, and get out of here,” she said looking at me and taking my hands.

“What do you mean get out of here? I’m here, at home.”

“No you’re not,” she almost yelled. “This, this is a different world. It is between the living and the dead. That is why you have been able to see Joe and Darrin, even though they were never really here.”

I stood up. “How do I get out of here?” I asked her.

“I don’t know. Try to wake up.”

“I’m sick of people telling me to wake up!” I yelled. I stood there and closed my eyes and tried to wake up. No luck. Then it came to me.

“Kim, tell me about the accident. What happened,” I said encouragingly.

“Well, as we went around the curb, the other car didn’t turn and crashed straight into us. I ended up flying through the window, and ended up being crashed by the car as it was rolling down the hill. The car kept rolling and it crashed into a tree. The ambulance came and took out your body, along with Joyce’s. A mere minute after they pulled you out, the car exploded, since the gas was leaking and something sparked it.”

I was silent for a moment. I can’t believe it, Kim was dead. “Do you know what happened to Joyce?” I asked her.

She shrugged at me. “She wasn’t here when I got here. All dead people’s spirit’s end up here sometime before they cross over. You can choose to crossover whenever you want to. I stayed to help you get back, because I knew there was a chance that you could still live,” she said with tears in her eyes.

“Thank you Kim. I’m really going to miss you,” I said, crying as I hugged her.

I sat on the couch, trying to remember the crash. I racked my brain as hard as I could, but nothing would come. I flopped backwards and it hit me.

I remember it all. My dream from last night played again, but it went further. I was rolling down the hill, as my head was banging against the window multiple times, lucky that it didn’t shatter. I looked to my right, but nobody was there. Kim was sitting there. She must have been thrown out of the window by the force of the crash.

I looked in my rearview mirror and saw Joyce clutching onto the seat with all of her might, her face was deadly pale. Yet as I looked, I could see her eyes move so I know that she was still alive.

As the car kept rolling, at one point it felt as if we rolled over something and crushed it, but I didn’t know what. With one last roll, it crashed into a tree. I was violently shoved against the window and it knocked me out.

I heard voices and opened my eyes and saw doctors and nurses rushing about. I was moving quickly down a hallway, and stopped when they got to a large room. There were doctors around me talking.

One man seemed to take charge. He said something about a blood clot, and the next thing I knew I had a mask on my face and I was falling asleep. My eyes drifted partway open, and I saw the same doctor standing around. I caught his last few words before drifting off once again, “It’s up to her if she’s strong enough to live or not. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Suddenly there was blackness. I tried opening my eyes, but they didn’t want to budge. I heard someone softly crying. “Please Melanie, don’t give up.”

My eyes shot open and I was in a hospital. I quickly sat up and looked around the room, but I couldn’t believe what I saw in front of me. “Joyce,” I said hoarsely, tears in my eyes.

She looked up at me from where she was sitting. “Melanie! I’m so glad that you’re alive!” she said as she came over and hugged me. “We were all so worried about you. Just hold on,” she said going over to the door.

She opened the door and waved for someone to come over here. I heard feet running down the hallway as Joyce turned to look at me. The door opened and in walked Joe, followed by Darrin. My heart jumped at the sight of him.

He came over and stood by my bed. He took my hand in his and looked into my eyes. “I love you,” he said leaning in to kiss me. “I’m so happy you woke up,” he backed away smiling.

A doctor walked in. “I’m glad you’re awake Ms. Tanders. You had all of us here quite scared. But now that you’re finally awake, you’ll be just fine. We will have to do tests later to make sure that your brain hasn’t suffered any more damage that we don’t know about. I’ll be back later,” he said and then left.

Suddenly, I broke down into tears and started sobbing my heart out. “Shh, what’s wrong?” Darrin asked trying to comfort me.

“Kim. I know that she’s dead already,” I said crying into his shoulders.

“But how did you know? We didn’t tell you,” Joyce said confused.

“Well, while I was “sleeping”, I had this dream. I woke up and saw Kim there. She said that the accident was two weeks ago. Though she was deadly pale, and she was wearing all red. She told me that you were dead from the accident,” I said looking Joyce square in the eyes.

“I was sitting in shock, when Joe came in my room, and told me I had to be strong to pull through it. Then I fell asleep and I saw Joyce and Darrin in it, you guys told me to wake up. I did wake up after it, but I still kept hearing a voice telling me to wake up. Later on I went to sleep and had a “dream” about the accident, but I couldn’t remember all of it. So I asked Kim what happened, because she kept telling me that I didn’t belong there. So, that is when she told me that she was dead, along with some other things.”

I took a deep breath before continuing. “She told me what happened in the accident. After that, I remembered the whole crash and completed it. Then there was blackness, but I heard someone say ‘Please Melanie, don’t give up’. So I opened my eyes, and saw I was here. Thank you for staying here with me,” I said looking at Joyce.

“I knew that she would hear us talking to her,” Joe said proudly.

“How long was I out for?” I questioned.

“Close to a week. The doctors were saying that if you didn’t wake up within the next few days, all hope for you would have been lost. I’m just glad you’re safe,” Joyce said happily.

“Hey, could you please give Mel and me some privacy?” Darrin asked them.

They nodded their heads and walked out, leaving me alone with Darrin.

“I was so scared when I got the phone call from Joe. Joyce called Joe and told him that you guys were in an accident, and he called me. I rushed up here right away. I told you that I would always be there for you, so I stayed with you almost the whole time when the nurses didn’t kick me out.”

I laughed at this. “How did you get them to let you stay here for so long?”

He blushed. “I kind of told them something.”

“And what was it?” I asked raising an eyebrow.

He got off the bed and kneeled so that he was eye level with me. “Melanie, I love you so much. I have missed not having you with me since we broke up. I lost you once, and this accident scared me. I don’t want to lose you again. So what I’m saying is,” he said as he brought out a box from behind his back and opening it. Inside was a diamond ring.

I was speechless, as the tears that somehow were in my eyes threatened to fall. “Melanie Elaine Tanders,” he said, his voice wavering, “will you marry me?”

Sorry if it's a lil long, but it all needed to be said in this last and final chapter. I hoped that you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it! I will not post the Epilogue to this until Tuesday, since Monday is Memorial Day. In the meantime, if you want to read more of my stories, I have the first chapter of "A New Kind of Good" posted. I would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out! I will be writing it, because I want to write something other than romance for a while. Thanks all!!
