Just a Dare ~Chapter 24~
|
As soon as I turned the radio on as I drove away from Kent, the song “Hanging By a Moment,” by Lifehouse came on. I started crying because it reminded me of Darrin and what I felt about him.
I surprised everyone when I got back to EMU, since I was supposed to be spending the weekend with Darrin. I couldn’t tell them the truth, so I told them that after I got there, I chickened out. It was about 7 when I finally got back to campus.
The next month passed by slowly. I was miserable without talking to Darrin. I called him one day just to say hi. He didn’t pick up, and we ended up playing phone tag. He finally got a hold of me 2 days later, and we talked. I missed him so much, but I wasn’t going to tell him that, because I wasn’t ready to do that yet. My heart was still healing.
I finally got to go home on April 26th after all my finals were done and my room cleaned out. We said our goodbyes early because Joyce left the day before, and Kim left on that day too, so I had to spend the night in my room alone. It was so empty it scared me.
The day I got home, I called all my friends and we got together. It was so nice outside that we had a bon fire in my back yard. I loved being back home. Whenever I go home, I feel so happy. It makes me feel almost whole.
I saw that the fire was dying so I went to get more firewood while everyone else was talking about school and what things they had to do. All of my other friends that were in college still had two weeks left before their year was officially over. But they all go to school about 45 minutes from home, so when I came back, they were all too willing to hang out since I haven’t seen them since back in February.
I was picking out the best pieces of firewood to use that would last the longest when someone put their hand on top of mine. Their touch sent shivers down my spine. I turned to look, and then I was staring into Darrin’s eyes.
“Welcome back Mel,” he said giving me a warm smile.
“Darrin,” I said breathlessly. I almost fell over backwards as I took a step back away from him.
“Don’t worry, I’m just here as a friend,” he said holding his hands up. “Liz called and told me that you were coming back today. She also called me later and told me that you were having a bonfire here. It sure is a nice one too,” he said looking over at the fire.
“Thanks,” I said as I went back to getting firewood.
It was silent while I was getting the wood. To my surprise, it wasn’t an awkward silence at all. It was comfortable just standing there.
“I haven’t given up on you,” he said breaking the silence and looking at me.
“I haven’t given up on you either,” I said looking back at him. “But that does not mean that if you were to ask me out that I would say yes,” I told him.
“I kind of figured that,” he said kicking at bark on the ground. “Just in case you wanted to know though, I have been really good. You can even ask Joe. He came with me,” he said nodding over towards the fire.
I looked over and saw Joe talking with Kevin. I just smiled and looked back at Darrin and put a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry, I trust you,” I said with a big smile.
“Thanks,” he said as he got a big goofy smile on his face. “Here, let me help you with that,” he said taking the two biggest pieces of wood that I had in my arms.
We put the pieces on the fire. I saw that my friend Sarah took my seat, so I had to get another chair. I set up a chair for Darrin and one for Joe. I was just about to go get another chair for me to sit in when Darrin pulled me down in his lap.
I struggled at first, just to put up a fight for fun, be he just held me tight, like he didn’t want to let go. I finally gave in a just cuddled with him. My friends awed at me, and I swatted at them to try and shush them, but it didn’t work too well.
I went in at one point to go get graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate so that we could make smores. I was about to go outside when my cell started going off. I jumped up and down with the bag of stuff as I answered.
“Hello dear. How is home?” Joyce asked.
“It is AMAZING!” I told her. “In fact, my friends and I are having a bon fire,” I said excited to hear from her. It was only a day and already I miss her.
“A bonfire? How exciting! I wish I could have a bonfire,” she said jealously, but I knew that it was in good fun.
“Yes! All my friends are here. Oh, and Darrin is here too,” I added as I went out the back door to start heading back to the bonfire.
“Darrin? How is he? He’s a really good guy,” she said happy.
“Oh, he’s good. Just the usually,” I said as I almost reached the fire. “So how is home going for you? I miss you already,” I half laughed, half cried into the phone.
“Home is really good. I miss everybody too,” she said sadly. “I feel bad for you, since you were all alone last night.”
“It’s okay. It was very lonely, but I survived,” I said smiling as I sat down on the ground by the fire. Darrin looked at me with a questioning look. “It’s Joyce,” I mouthed to him.
Darrin stood up and came to where I was sitting. He held his hand out for my phone with an excited grin on his face. “Hey Joyce, someone here wants to talk to you,” I said as I handed my phone over to him.
“Hey Joyce, it’s Darrin, he said into the phone as he walked down the hill.
I got up and went over and sat in his seat. “So who was that?” Joe asked with amusement.
“That was Joyce, my roommate from this year,” I told him. “When Darrin came up to visit, Joyce and her boyfriend Noah hung out with us a lot. I think they became good friends after those two days,” I said smiling.
“That’s cool, as long as they don’t replace me,” he said grinning.
“I don’t think that they ever could,” I said giving him a pat on the back.
“Good to know,” he said looking back at the fire. “And Melanie? Thanks for not giving up on him,” he said as he nudged.
“I don’t think I could even if I tried,” I said looking into the fire.
I was lost looking into the fire when I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Here, I’m done,” he said handing my phone to me. “She wanted to say goodbye to you before she hung up.”
I took my phone back from him and stood up so he could sit back down. “Hey there,” I said moving away from the fire a bit.
“Melanie, Darrin told me why you came back to Eastern that one weekend,” she said somberly.
“Oh, he did, did he?” I said, not sure what to do about it.
“Yeah. Just please tell me that you aren’t mad at him for that. I think you two could work if given the chance,” she stated, and I could tell she was a bit upset.
“No, I am not mad at him for it. After that I just needed the time. If I was mad at him, he wouldn’t still be here at my house,” I told her.
“That’s good,” she said sighing in relief. “Well, I have to go now. Have fun at your bonfire dear. I love you!”
“I love you too dear,” I said as I hung up. I stood there looking at everyone. They were all talking and having a good time making s’mores. I looked at Darrin, and my heart just seemed to swell. I truly loved him, and it scared me.
As I was standing there, Darrin looked back at me and motioned for me to go back over there. I smiled as I walked forward, and I let out a squeak as he pulled me down into his lap once again. I smiled and placed a kiss on his cheek and went back to cuddling with him.
By the time it rolled around to 1 a.m., the only people left were Joe, Darrin, Liz and Kevin.
“I think that it’s time to leave,” said Liz as she stood up from Kevin’s lap and stretched out. “I am so happy that I got to see you,” she said giving me a big hug.
“I think Darrin and I are gonna get going too,” Joe said standing up.
“It was nice seeing you guys again,” Kevin said shaking their hands.
As the guys stood there talking, Liz and I started walking around to the front of the house to her car. “So why did you call Darrin?” I asked her when we were out of earshot.
“Because I knew that you wouldn’t,” she said putting an arm around me.
Liz was the only one who I told about what happened when I went to visit Darrin over at Kent. Ad I’m glad that I did tell her. “Thanks Liz,” I said putting my arm around her.
“It’s no problem. It’s not hard to see that you two are crazy about each other. You two just need time to get things settled again.”
“Did I ever tell you how much I love you?” I said as I glomped her in a hug.
“Many many times,” she said laughing.
“Looks like your girlfriend is cheating on you Kev,” said Joe laughing as the guys came into sight.
“It’s okay. It’s just with another girl,” Liz said hugging me tighter and putting a leg around me.
“It’s okay with me, as long as I get in on some of the action,” Kevin said winking.
“I’m sorry, but this is a closed relationship,” I told Kevin with a serious face. “Why don’t you take Darrin?”
“I’m sorry man, but I already have someone,” Darrin said as Kevin looked at him.
“Who?” all of us said at once.
“Who do you think?” he said as he walked towards Joe.
“Sorry man, I don’t go that way,” Joe said running away from him.
Liz and I let go of our hug and laughed. “I’ll see you next weekend dear,” she said as she went over to Kevin, grabbed his hand and walked towards his car.
Joe finally came back around. “I’m gonna go sit in the car and let you two talk. See you around Melanie,” he said giving me a quick hug. He then walked down the driveway to the car.
“I’m really glad that you came,” I said looking at him.
“I’ve really missed you Mel,” he said taking a step closer to me.
“I’ve really missed you too,” I said as tears threatened to fall.
“Shh, don’t cry,” he said as he embraced me.
“I can’t help it. I have been so miserable without talking to you. You make me so happy, and this past month has just been horrible without you,” I said sniffling.
“I’ve felt the same exact way,” he said as tilted my head so we were looking each other in the eyes.
Slowly the distance closed between our lips. It was the most tender, yet passionate kiss I have ever experienced.
“Promise me that you won’t leave me again,” I whispered against his lips.
“I promise,” he said as he kissed me again. He broke the kiss, and chuckled as he rested his forehead against mine. “I thought that you said that you wouldn’t say yes if I asked you out.”
“That doesn’t matter. I’m the one who asked you out,” I said as I lightly kissed him.
“I hate it, but I have to go,” he said as he looked towards the road.
I kissed him one last time. “Then go,” I said playfully pushing him away.
“I’ll call you tomorrow,” he said over his shoulder as he made his way to the car. I stood outside and watched them drive away until they were out of sight.
While I was dating Darrin, I had the best time of my life. We saw each other every other day. He even came with me to Cedar Point when I went to go see all my friends from EMU during the summer. I fell more in love with him everyday.
**4 years later**
I graduated from Eastern in a year ago, in 2011. I was now living in Ypsilanti in a house with Kim. She and Tyler broke up at the end of our freshman year, so they weren’t together for that long.
Halfway through our junior year, Noah broke up with Joyce, and it was terrible because she was so heartbroken. Darrin and Joe were up visiting when it happened. Joe comforted her, and over the next few months, those two became really close. At the beginning of our senior year in college, they started dating.
But yet, at the beginning of our junior year, Darrin and I broke up. Yes, we did love each other, but it was a mutual agreement. Everything was just too predictable, so we both agreed that it would be best to see other people for a while. We are still the best of friends though. I know that if we are meant to be, it will somehow find a way.
I had a few boyfriends, but none of them held the place in my heart that Darrin did.
It was currently St. Patrick’s Day weekend, and Joyce was up visiting Kim and I for old time’s sake. One of my friends in Detroit was having a party, so we went there. It was fun, because I saw a lot of people that I knew. I was so excited, because I also saw Shane, and I haven’t seen him for a year and a half. It turns out that he was happily seeing a guy. I was so happy for him, since he deserved it.
Kim, Joyce and I decided to leave the party at 12:30. I didn’t drink at all because I was the one that was driving. I was so happy that us three were hanging out again, just like the old times.
“So, how is Joe doing?” I asked Joyce as I tried to start a conversation.
“He’s doing good,” she slurred.
I was coming to a curb, and there was a guardrail alongside it, because down the other side was a really steep hill. Driving past there always creeps me out. I hate going around curves in the first place because of an accident I was in years ago with my sister. Having a steep hill didn’t help matters.
I saw headlights coming from the other way. “Better go slow around this one,” I muttered to myself.
As I was rounding the curb, the other car smashed head on into my door. The force of the crash sent my car through the guard rail and down the hill. The last thing that I remembered was hearing Joyce and Kim scream, and then there was nothing.
