I went back to EMU the day after I went to the movies. I didn’t really want to go back, but I had to. What happened between Joe and I was weird. In a way, I think it was a good thing, because I think I got the best friend approval. I drove the 3 ½ hours back to EMU with a huge grin on my face that no one could get rid of. My parents actually let me have my car for the rest of the year, so that was another plus.
I arrived back at Eastern at about 2:30. Kim was already back and was playing Guitar Hero when I opened the door to my room.
“What time did you get back here?” I asked her as I set down my luggage over by my bed. I sat down and laid back on my bed, exhausted from driving so long.
“I’ve been back since 10 a.m.,” she said as she kept playing her game. “Oh, and thanks for leaving the bathroom door unlocked. I really did not want to be trapped in my room with Kristen and Holland,” she said laughing.
At that moment I got a call from Joyce. “Hey there,” I said happily as I answered the phone. “It’s Joyce,” I mouthed to Kim when she gave me a weird look.
“Hi! I hate to be a bother, but do you know anyone who could give me a ride back to campus from the train station?”
“Yeah, I’ll do it. My parents let me have my car on campus for the rest of the year,” I said full of excitement.
“Thank you so much! At the moment, my train is expected to be at the station at about 6, and I’ll call you if we are running late or anything,” she told me.
“Sounds like a plan! I’ll see you later!”
“Later dear!” she said as she hung up.
“Hey Kim, later on I’m gonna go to the train station to pick up Joyce. Want to come with me?” I asked watching her finish the song she was on.
“Sure. There’s nothing else to do around here. Wanna play?”
“Why not?” I said as I grabbed the other guitar.
I didn’t get a call from Joyce, so the train was most likely on time. We played the game until 5:35. We then got ready and got in my car to head to the train station. On the way to the train station, we talked lightly about what we did during break.
“Oh, I now have a boyfriend!” she said excitedly.
“I’m going to have to meet him you know,” I said as I turned into the train station.
She gave a nervous laugh. “You already know him,” she said as I turned the car off.
I raised an eyebrow as I looked over at her. “Oh really? Then who is it?”
She looked so nervous, she was just about shaking in her seat. “Will you promise me that you won’t get mad?” she said in a whisper.
I gently put a hand on her shoulder. “Kim, whoever it is, I promise I won’t get mad. I want you to be happy.”
She let out a nervous sigh. “It’s Tyler,” she said looking out the window.
I just sat there speechless. I had a feeling it might have been him, but I really didn’t want it to be.
“I’m sorry Melanie. I know that you and he aren’t friends anymore. It just happened one day while we were talking on the phone,” she said in a soft voice.
“Kim, it’s okay. I guess I’ll just have to put up with him for you,” I said gently shaking her shoulders. “I support your decision 100%.”
“Thanks. Now, let’s go inside,” she said getting out of the car.
We went inside the train station, and within 10 minutes, Joyce’s train pulled up. We greeted her warmly and put her bags in the car and drove back to campus.
As I parked the car, Kim got a call. “That was Tyler. He just got back and he wants to see me. I’ll catch up with you guys later,” she said as she got out of the car and walked away.
I popped my trunk so Joyce could get her bags out. “What was all that about Tyler?” Joyce asked me as she got her stuff and closed the trunk.
“Oh, that,” I said as we began walking. “She and Tyler are dating.”
Joyce stopped walking and dropped her bags. “Are you kidding me? Why would she do that? Are you okay with it?”
I stopped and asked myself that. “You know what? I am perfectly fine with it.”
“Melanie, are you sure?” she asked picking up her bags and beginning to walk again.
“I’m sure. Anyways, even if I wasn’t I would have to deal with it, because I’m sure she would end up bringing him around. I just want to move on with everything,” I said as I put an arm around her.
Over the next few weeks, I had to endure endless talk of Kim and Tyler. I was really glad that she was happy, but it was annoying. It almost seemed as if she was rubbing it in my face.
I also saw Tyler quite a bit. We started talking more, and by the time that we left home for Easter, we were really good friends again, but not as well as we used to be.
During Easter break, I was so fatigued from school that I didn’t see any of my friends or Darrin. In fact, I didn’t even talk to Darrin that weekend. Lately when we have been talking on the phone, our conversations were boring. Like he’s losing interest or something.
When I went back to EMU, I already had it planned out in my head that the next weekend I would go visit him at Kent. I called Joe and told him my plans. At first he seemed a little wary about it, but I finally convinced him that it would be okay.
That whole week I was giddy with excitement. I couldn’t wait to see Darrin and surprise him. Since this time, I knew what I was feeling, and I was going to ask him to be my boyfriend.
That Friday I skipped class so I could leave and get there before it got dark. As I was driving and I was about 30 minutes away from the Kent campus, I got a call from Joe.
“Melanie, I really don’t think that it’s a good idea to come here,” he said with urgency in his voice.
“It’s too bad. I’m about 30 minutes away, and there is no way I’m turning back now, and I’m not going home,” I argued.
I heard him sigh on the other end. “Just promise me that you won’t freak out.”
“I promise. I’ll see you in less than 30 minutes,” I said as I hung up.
I pulled up to the building that Joe said that he and Darrin lived in. I got out of my car and Joe greeted me with a hug.
“It’s good to see you,” I said happily, as the excitement rose in my chest to see Darrin.
“Yeah. It’s good to see you too. Why don’t we just explore the building a bit first before we actually go see Darrin. I told him that I was going for a walk. He won’t expect me back for another 15 minutes,” he said leading me inside.
We explored his building for ten minutes and then went down to his floor. “Wait here until I say that it’s okay to come in,” he said opening the door and going inside quickly. As soon as the door firmly shut, Joe opened the door and came back out. “Um, he’s not in there. Why don’t we go wait outside for him to come back,” he said escorting me down the hall.
Right then the door to his room opened. Joe, who are you talking… Melanie? What are you doing here?” Darrin said as he fully opened the door. He was only wearing a pair of boxers.
“Darrin, what are you doing?” I heard a female voice say. Suddenly, there was a girl looking out into the hallway and wrapping her arms around Darrin.
Tears started falling down my face as I turned around and ran to go outside. Behind me I heard Joe yelling at Darrin. I went outside and sat down on one of the benches, just thinking about things.
“Melanie,” I heard Darrin say softly behind me.
“You are such an asshole,” I said angrily as the tears kept falling.
“I don’t know what to say,” as he sat down beside me. I saw that he quickly got dressed before coming out here. “Last night some of the guys and I got drunk, and things with her went a little too far. I was lonely and I missed you too much,” he said not looking at me.
“I was going to surprise you. I was going to ask you to be my boyfriend,” I said as I looked over at him. “I guess that I never should have let you back in my life. Since all you manage to do is hurt me all the time,” I said, threatening to cry again.
Darrin finally looked at me. I could see the pain in his eyes, which reflected my own. “I never meant to hurt you,” he sighed, taking a deep breath.
He took a moment before he spoke again. “Technically, I didn’t cheat on you since we weren’t together. But I know how you feel. I saw Monica do the same thing to me, which is why she and I never got back together. That girl you saw in there means nothing to me. I didn’t even really want to do anything with her. But she was all over me and just wouldn’t leave. At one point I was just too drunk to do anything. I’m sorry that I couldn’t be stronger,” he said looking at the ground.
I heard the pain in his voice, and felt sorry for him. “Darrin, I think that I just need space right now,” I said looking away.
Darrin just stood up and nodded. “Remember that I love you, and I’m always here for you,” he whispered in my ear. He then kissed my forehead and walked away. I heard him cursing to himself.
“He was telling the truth, you know,” Joe said as he came and sat beside me. “That girl kept throwing herself on him. At one point he was so drunk, she just took advantage of him and had her way with him,” he said shaking his head sadly.
“But that’s rape!’ I said in shock.
“I know. But Darrin isn’t going to tell the police. He has too much dignity. Saying that he got raped is like backing out of a fight because you’re too scared. Please just do me a favor, don’t give up on him,” he pleaded with me.
I nodded my head. “Tell him that one day I’ll forgive him, but I don’t know when. I know that it wasn’t his fault, but it still just hurts, you know?” I said as I got up.
“What are you doing?” Joe asked me.
“I’m gonna go back to Eastern. It’s still daylight, so I should make it back in time. Oh, and do me a favor?” I asked him as I walked to my car.
“Sure, what is it?” he asked.
“Tell him not to give up on me,” I said smiling as I got into my car and drove away.
