As soon as I got up to my room, I flopped on my bed and just cried. I just told the person that I have been in love with for over two years that I did not want to be his girlfriend. I really did not want to do it, but I felt in my heart that what I did was the right choice.
Joyce came over and sat down next to me and began stroking my hair. “Don’t worry, you’ll see him again someday. Noah and I are going down to the eateries to get food. If you need anything at all, we’ll be down there. I love you dear,” she said as she patted me on the head and took off with Noah down to the eateries.
A half hour later, I was still lying down face first on my bed, though I wasn’t crying anymore. I was going over how fun this weekend when there was a knock on my door. “Who is it?” I asked, not really wanting to talk to anyone.
“It’s Ashley. Can I come in?”
“Yeah, come in,” I said as I rubbed my eyes and sat up.
She opened the door, and sprinted over and jumped on my bed. I laughed at how excited she was. “So, who was the guy you were with last night?”
“That was Darrin Rodmer. He and I went to high school together,” I said sighing.
“There’s got to be more to it than that. Why did he come to visit, and what is up with you two,” she said bouncing up and down.
“Just calm down,” I said laughing. “He came up this weekend to visit me. He wanted to tell me that he liked me.”
“I’m so happy for you!” she squealed. “Well, what happened?”
The smile came off my face. “He asked me to be his girlfriend,” I said sadly as I looked out the window.
“That’s great! But why do you look so sad about it?”
“I had to tell him no,” I said trying to hold the tears back.
“You two looked so cute together! Why did you tell him no?” she asked, putting an arm around me.
“In high school, he ignored me all four years. How am I really supposed to just say yes to someone who has ignored me for so long, no matter how much I may like him? We really don’t know each other that well either. Just spending a weekend with them doesn’t make up the time lost for those four years. Even though it was just about the best weekend of my life. I really love him Ashley,” I broke down in to tears and hugged her back.
“Shh. I think that you made the right choice dear. Who knows? Maybe sometime down the road you two will be together. But for now, just enjoy the moment,” she said giving me a comforting pat on the back. “I was going to go get something to eat. Care to join me?” she said standing up and heading towards the door.
I smiled feebly at her. “I already ate, but I’ll sit down there with you if you want some company,” I said moving to get up.
On our way to the eateries, we passed Joyce and Noah as they were heading back upstairs to our room, I’m guessing. Ashley and I just made a lot of small talk as I stood with her while she was getting her food.
“I can’t believe that we have been back a week already. This week seems to have flown by so quickly,” I said as Ashley was paying for her food.
“I know. First Winter break went by fast, and the first week back feels as if we have only been back for a day or two,” she said shaking her head.
After she got what she needed from the condiment isle, we made our way over towards a booth. As we were sitting down, Ashley’s cell started going off.
“Hey! I’m down in the eateries with Mel. Yeah, you can come join us. See ya in a bit,” she said as she hung up. “I hope you don’t mind, but Jess is going to be joining us.”
“No problem,” I said shrugging my shoulders.
Jessica was one of my friends that I met during playfair at Orientation. That is also where I met Tyler and some of my other friends. Moments later we saw Jess walk through the doors of the eateries. She pointed that she was going to get some food before joining us. As she was walking over towards us, she was on her phone.
“See you later dude,” she said into the phone as she sat down. “Hey guys, what’s up?”
“Nothing,” Ashley and I said in unison.
“Oh, by the way, Tyler is going to come down,” she said casually.
I started hyperventilating. I couldn’t bear to be down here with Tyler. “Um, Jess? Did you tell Tyler that I was down here?” I asked her casually.
“Yeah, he mumbled something to himself when I mentioned your name,” she said pausing to look at me. “You seem tense. Is everything alright between you and him?”
“Not really,” I said looking around frantically. “It’s a long story. I’m sorry to just leave you guys, but I would rather not be here while Tyler is here. I’ll see you guys later,” I said as I stood up and got out of the booth.
As I walked away from the booth, I heard them start to talk as Jess got up and moved to where I was sitting. I shook my head sadly as I walked away. I knew that it was childish to leave just because Tyler was going there, but I couldn’t help it. I knew that if I saw him, I would either have a break down, or blow up at him, and neither of those scenes would be pretty.
As I was making my way over to the door that leads into my dorm complex, the door opened and someone walked out. I didn’t notice who it was as I was looking at the ground. I accidentally bumped into the person.
“I’m sorry about that,” I said as I looked up at them. “Oh, hi Jack. I seem to be bumping in to you everywhere today,” I said laughing.
“That you do. I’m off to Putnam to work on a project with one of my classmates. See ya later,” he said as he walked away.
I had my back to the door as I waved at him as he walked away. I heard the door open, so I turned around to catch it so I wouldn’t have to swipe my card. I went to walk in the door when I ran into someone. Suddenly I was pushed up against the wall, and my chin was being lifted up so I could look at the person. Next thing I knew, I was looking back at Tyler.
“Let me go,” I seethed.
“Not until you hear me out,” he said staring in my eyes.
“Can’t this wait until another time? I have essays to work on,” I said struggling to get free from him. “And watch my right arm. I got a tattoo there yesterday,” I said wincing.
“Sorry,” he said letting up a little on my right arm.
“What do you want Tyler,” I sighed in exasperation.
“I want you to know what you saw Friday night between Dave and I meant nothing. I am so confused about a lot of things. But one thing I’m not confused about is you. I really want to give us a chance,” he pleaded with me.
“Tyler, no. Either you or Dave is lying, and I don’t know who to believe. He told me that you said that nothing would ever happen between us. Now who is telling the truth?” I asked poking a finger to his chest.
“I’m telling the truth. Dave just said that because he’s upset that his guy left, so he told you that so he could have me,” Tyler said pleadingly. “Please Mel, I feel really guilty about what happened. Dave came on to me, and I just couldn’t stop. And then when you saw us, it was too late.”
“Tyler, no. After what happened with you, I realized that my feelings for Darrin are stronger than the ones I had for you. And after what happened, I don’t know who to trust anymore. I don’t know if we can go back to the friendship that we had. Besides, how do I know you’re telling the truth now? Why were you in Sellers when you live in Phelps?” I said looking away from him.
“I was in Sellers because I was hoping to talk to you. Even ask Joyce. I went up to your room to talk to you when she said that you weren’t there, and that you were somewhere with Ashley. So I called Jessica and said that she was down in the eateries with you and her,” he said begging me to believe him.
“I just don’t know Tyler. It’s going to take time for me to be able to trust you again. I just need some space. I have to go,” I said as I broke away and headed into my dorm complex leaving Tyler behind me.
I went up to my room and went straight to my bed and flopped down. Joyce came over and sat beside me. “Tyler was just up here asking about you.”
“I know,” I said flatly. “I ran into him on my way up here. Literally.”
“I’m so sorry dear. Are you okay?” she said, and I could tell she was concerned.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I just told him I need time. I just hope that he listens this time,” I chuckled.
After that day, I hardly talked to Tyler anymore. Our friendship was basically no more, except for just an awkward hi when we would see each other.
Throughout the semester, I talked to Darrin about once a week. Though occasionally I would have a bad day and we would talk two or maybe three times a week. It’s funny, now that my heart was taken, there were so many guy s who were asking me on dates. But yet, I turned them all down, because the one guy that I wanted was close to 200 miles away.
When I went home for Spring Break, mine was the week before his, so I hung out with him on the weekends. The first Saturday I was home, my friends planned to go rollerskating, and surprisingly he went with us. The others were wary of him there, since he usually never hung with us or gave us the time of day. But by the end of the night when we afterwards went to a restaurant, they acted like old friends.
It was fun to see Darrin talk to my friends. He even hung out with Liz’s bf Kevin for a while when I was talking to Liz or someone else. They got along really well too.
“Melanie, our boyfriends are getting along. What’s up with that?” she asked me jokingly, as she leaned across the table to ask me.
“I don’t know. Maybe this is how straight men actually act together,” I laughed.
We had a joke with our group, because usually our boyfriends didn’t really like our friends, or didn’t get along with our other friend’s bfs. So it was weird to see them actually getting along. And usually the ones who hated the others, we found out later on that they were actually gay.
The next weekend, we went to the movies, and his best friend Joe came with us. I think that Darrin persuaded him to come with us, because he didn’t look too happy to be there. We ended up seeing shutter. It really wasn’t scary as what the previews led to believe. But at one part I pretended to be scared so I could cuddle up to Darrin.
After the movie, we went across the street to Arabica’s, which is a coffee shop. My friends and I always went there after we saw a movie to just talk and hangout. They had really good ice cream and smoothies too.
After we ordered, our group went and sat down on the big leather couch that was sitting in front of a fireplace. We could only fit about 4 or 5 people on the couch, so we pulled some chairs around by the table that was near it. It was quite enjoyable being there with my friends, talking and laughing.
At one point, Joe came over to me and asked to talk to me. We went outside and sat on the patio that was outside there. We just sat in silence for a minute, until Joe spoke.
“Melanie, I just want to know how you really feel about Darrin,” he said seriously.
I just laughed. “Why are you asking me this?”
“Darrin is my best friend. I know that in high school he ignored you and ridiculed you and your friends. I just want to know that you aren’t just stringing him along to get back at him for what he did to you.”
I shook my head in disbelief. “Joe, if you really knew me, you wouldn’t ask this. I love Darrin. I always have loved him,” I said looking inside longingly. “Besides, I am not the type of person to just string someone along, no matter how much I dislike them.”
Joe stood up and stood right in front of me. His face was an inch away from mine. “How much do you love him?”
“I love him so much. It is a really strong feeling,” I said staring him down.
He was taking my answer in. “Why do you love him?”
I blinked. Why did I love Darrin? I have actually never thought about it. “I just do. He is just so… so… listen, I don’t know why. All I know is that whenever I’m around him, I feel whole, and that everything is right. Being with him is just the best feeling in the world. From the way he smiles, to just listening to him talk, I just love everything,” I said looking down.
Joe didn’t say anything so I chanced a look at him. He just had a big goofy grin on his face. “Good answer,” he said as he pulled me into a hug. “Let’s go back inside. You have no idea how relieved I am,” he said guiding me inside.
We walked inside and I saw Darrin laughing at something someone said. I stood there while Joe went over there and said something to Darrin. Darrin then looked over at me and smiled. I swear that I saw his face light up as he looked over at me. Seeing the smile on his face, I know that what I told Joe was the truth. I went over and sat by Darrin and cuddled, just enjoying being.

I know I said that I wanted 12/13 rates before I posted this one, but I got this done today, and I couldn't WAIT to post it!! I have pics up of the characters if you would like to see them. I want to know what you think of the pics. :D so, if its not too much trouble... could I PLEASE get at least 12/13 rates? I know how we all spend hours writing, and when we post them on here, we like to get rates and nice comments to make us feel that our writing is actually worth something. I usually spend all day, or a day and a half just writing a chapter. on word, some of these chapters are like 3 1/2 pages long.
I may have rambled on, but I don't know how else to get the point across! Thank you to those who do vote! And I'm sorry if I don't keep you posted!! I usually go by the names of the people whose comments I see, so it would be wise to check back here periodically :D THANK YOU!! Also, if there are any other characters you want me to put in the slide, tell me!!
