Keeping From Destruction
|
BANG! was the last sound that Marlene Collins heard before she blacked out. When she woke up, she was only wearing a hospital gown, but as she glanced about the room, it was clear that she was not in a hospital at all. She was in some kind of laboratory, which was freaking her out for she did not know why she would be in one. As she was looking down around her bed for a button to push to call someone, a man walked through the door and into the room.
At a first glance, he was pretty tall. She would pin him at about 6’4”, and he had dark brown hair that he spiked. He had bright blues eyes, and when he looked at her, she could see the brightness in them. And when he smiled at you with those perfect teeth of his, you just wanted to melt.
“Good morning Ms. Collins, I am Dr. Andrew Larkins, but you can just call me Andy,” he said smiling as he made his way over to her and sat on the seat that was next to the bed.
“Fine, Andy it is,” she replied. “So, uh, where exactly am I? And please call me Marlene if we’re on such terms.”
“Marlene,” he said slowly, testing saying her name. “I like it, it’s a nice name.” he said smiling at her more broadly, if that was even possible.
“Thanks, I guess,” she said blushing. “Could we please get to the part where you tell me what’s going on around here?”
The brightness left his eyes, and he went over and sat at the edge of her bed. “Marlene, there was an accident. You’re lucky that you’re even alive, since you were shot in the heart.” He looked over at her to see her expression, and they caught each other’s eyes. They held it there for a moment before Marlene looked away.
“But, if I was shot in the heart, how am I here then?” Marlene said with tears forming in her eyes, not daring to look back at Andrew.
“Well,” Andrew said, looking anywhere but at her, while fiddling with his thumbs. “Our squad arrived at the scene and found out that there was a gun fight. You see, we’ve been keeping tabs on you, for in the very near future, you are going to play a very important part in keeping the world from destruction.”
“What do you mean?” Marlene asked interrupting him.
“Not right now. I’ll get to that later. So, our squad arrived at the scene, and found you lying on the ground, with a gunshot wound to your heart. So basically, you were dead at the scene.” He looked down at the ground and took a deep breath before continuing on with the story. “When they got you back here, I thought that all was lost, but the doctors, including myself, operated on you and gave you a new heart.”
“A new heart? I thought that when a person was dead that even when they got a new heart, that it couldn’t bring them back,” Marlene said, deep in thought.
“Yes, that is true, but in your case it’s different. You see, we embedded a mechanical heart into you,” He said finally looking at her.
“A mechanical heart? Wow, but what is so special about a mechanical heart?” she asked.
“Well, a mechanical heart can be good in many ways, for example, you can go for long periods of time without getting tired. Or when you work out, you won’t get as out of breath as you usually do.” He said with a trace of a smile starting to form. “But there is a downside to having a mechanical heart too.”
“And that would be…” she said prodding him to go on.
“Well, you have to keep recharging your heart. It runs off of this new type of battery that is able to last for a week, but then has to be recharged. It would not be too fun if you were out in the middle of nowhere, and you had to recharge your battery. But being nowhere, there would be no way you could possibly do it, especially if you had no way to contact anyone.” He said, while looking her in the eyes with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Why did you tell me this? Do you have some kind of evil side or something?” she asked, playfully punching him in the arm.
“No, I’m not evil,” he said getting up. “I just know a lot about these kind of things. I actually do tests before I decide to give them to people. Is that ok?” he said walking towards the door.
“Hey, where are you going? I thought you were going to tell me why I am such an important part to help keep the world from destructing,” she said with a frown on her lips.
“I decided that it can wait until later. Besides, your heart isn’t fully charged, and I think that now would be a good time to do that,” he said, standing in the doorway.
“Ok, I guess I’ll see you later then. But can I ask you one more question?” she said biting her lip.
“Sure, what is it?” He said leaning on the door frame.
“My family. Are they aware of any of this?” she asked, fear apparent in her eyes.
Andy just looked at the ground. “As of now, they believe that you’re dead.”
Marlene burst down into tears. “I can’t imagine what this is doing to them,” she sobbed.
“I know that this is hard for you, but for now, you must believe that them not know that you are alive is the best thing right now,” he said going over to try and comfort her.
“Why?” she asked looking at him from tear streaked eyes.
“Because if anyone else, including your family, knew that you were still alive, they would try to kill you again, and they would do anything to make that so. Even by hurting the ones you love most,” he said while staring in her eyes, trying to get her to understand.
“I see. It hurts, but I understand. I think I would like to be alone now,” she said looking away from him.
“Well, I will leave you to your thoughts and let you get your rest. But I will be back later,” he standing up and walking out the door without looking back. He passed another doctor on his way down a hall. “Make sure that everything is hooked up properly, ok? She needs to be in top condition.” he told the other doctor.
“Yes Dr. Larkins, but I’m sure we can handle everything. Why don’t you go get some rest?” the other doctor asked as they went towards Marlene’s room.
“I think I’ll do that, thanks,” Andrew said as he walked away. “I need to charge my own heart as well,” he thought to himself.

I have posted this once before, but I took it off and rewrote it a bit. I don't know where it's going yet. I have some idea, but nothing is definite as of yet. I want to get away from the romance type genre. It may have a lil of it, but it will not be what this story mainly is. I would like to hear your thoughts and ideas on this. Also, if you would like to help try and write this, give it your own feel, write me a message! :D Please r/r/ comment please!
