Just a Dare ~Chapter 16~

Romance Created on 5-11-08 Views(171) Story Rating G

I was so excited! It was my best friend Liz from back home. “LIZ!” I screamed back into the phone. We both ended up breaking into a fit of laughter. “So to what do I owe the unexpected phone call?” I asked, calming down.

She was suddenly quiet on the other end. “Well, over the past few days, there has been this rumor going around. I just wanted to know if it was true or not.”

I was scared. What could this rumor possibly be going around that had to do with me? I am over 180 miles away from Newbury. How could they have heard anything about my life up here? “Well, if you would tell me what the rumor was, I could help you with that,” I replied.

“You see, I got a call from Katelyn Nichols earlier today,” she said with what I could detect as fear in her voice. Who could blame her though? Whenever you hear from Katelyn, it can’t be good. “So apparently, Katelyn called Nicole Jennings a couple days ago and asked about how Darrin was doing. Nicole said that she hasn’t heard anything from him in a while, so she called Joe (his best friend) to see what he’s been up to. Joe said that the last thing he heard from Darrin was that he was going to visit you up at EMU. That’s crazy talk though, isn’t it?” Liz asked me.

I didn’t know what to say. Soon, a lot of people back home will know that Darrin had come up here to visit me this weekend. There will be talk of whether we did anything or not. There will be even more rumors about whether we are together or not. It really sucks living in a small town where news travels really fast.

Apparently I must have been silent for a while, because she said, “Hello? Mel, are you still there? Please tell me that Darrin Rodmer did not go up there this weekend to visit you.”

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. “I can’t say that Liz. He actually did come up here to visit me, and he is in my room right now.”

“WHAT!” she screamed. “But why is he there?” she asked, a little calmer.

“He came up here because he says that he really likes me a wanted to give us a chance,” I said flopping down on the couch again.

“He LIKES you?” she basically yelled again. “Well, are you going to go for it?” she asked hopefully.

“I don’t know Liz. You know how I have been telling you things about Tyler?” I asked her.

“Yeah,” she said, urging me to go on.

“Well, I kinda have something with him. It’s not official or anything, but I can’t just drop him and go after Darrin since he came up here.”

I could hear her laughing on the other end. “Girl, you are in a predicament.”

“I know. I really like Tyler, and I think I possibly even love him. But Darrin, I have been in love with him for over a year, and that feeling hasn’t gone away. Seeing him again now just makes that feeling even stronger,” I said with a sigh.

“This is going to be totally cliché dear, but I believe that you just have to follow your heart in this. Just take a deep breath and think for a moment. Who do you think it would be harder to say goodbye to?”

I took a deep breath and started to think about it. Who would it be harder to say goodbye to? First, I was trying to think of what it would be like if I could never see Darrin again. I didn’t get too far in my thinking when I started to freak out. “Liz, I can’t do this!” I started sobbing into the phone.

“Mel, what’s wrong? Why are you so upset?” she asked with concern.

“I started thinking about what you said. Who would it be harder to say goodbye to? I just started to think about Darrin, and I don’t want that to happen, and I don’t want to think about that with Tyler either!” I said, still sobbing into the phone.

“Shh, you don’t have to think about it anymore tonight. But when you finally do choose someone, remember what I said. I should be letting you go now. Kevin and I are going out to dinner tonight. I’ll talk to you later, and remember that I love you dear!”

“Thanks Liz. I love you too. Have fun with Kevin, and be safe,” I said hanging up the phone.

No sooner had I put my phone down, Joyce walked into the study.

“Hey, everyone was wondering where you were at,” she said as she came down and sat beside me.

“Oh. Well, I just came down here because I needed to think. I also ordered food, and then my best friend from back home called, so I was talking to her for a while.” I said looking over at her.

She looked at me and noticed that my eyes were all puffy from when I was sobbing. “Are you alright Mel? Is there anything you want to talk about?” she asked, putting an arm around me.

“It’s kind of a long story. I don’t know if I have ti-,” I said as my phone went off. “Hello?” I said, answering my phone.

“Hello. This is Domino’s. Our driver will be over at the front of Sellers in about a minute or two.”

“Thanks,” I said as I hung up. “Well, that was the pizza place. It’s time to go down and get the food. Care to come with me?” I asked her standing up and starting to head out of the study and into the hallway.

“I would love to. And on the way, you can start to tell me what’s wrong,” she said linking her arm with mine.

“Well, today I actually talked to Tyler about what has been going on between us. That is a whole other story. Well, he said that he liked me, and he wanted me, as in he wants me in a relationship thing. Well, we were about to talk it over when Darrin showed up. He called me back on Tuesday night, and ever since that night, I can’t stop thinking about him,” I said as we entered the stairwell and began down the steps.

“Now, I’m having trouble, because I really like Tyler, but I have been in love with Darrin for the past year or so, and feelings like that just don’t go away easily. Seeing him now only makes those feelings stronger. I was talking to my friend from back home, and she asked me to ask myself who would it be harder to say goodbye to. I started to think about if I was to never see Darrin again, and I started freaking out and crying. And that is when you came in,” I said as we were nearing the first flight of stairs.

She let out a low whistle. “Well, then what happened after you walked out of the room will probably freak you out. As soon as you left, Kim went over and sat by Darrin, trying to flirt with him and trying to get him to do something. But he didn’t do anything, and just gave her weird looks and went and sat somewhere else.”

“What did she do after that?” I asked her as I raised an eyebrow, figuring that there was something else along with it.

“Well, she went over and sat by Tyler. She put a hand on his leg and started rubbing it. He took her hand off, but a minute later she put it back on there. He took it off again, but she just put it back and Tyler gave up and just left her hand there. Though, it didn’t look as if he was minding it too much,” she said as we went out the door that led to the lobby.

When we got out there, we saw that the pizza guy wasn’t there yet. I went over to the wall and banged my head on it. “This always happens when I like a guy,” I mumble.

“What always happens?” Joyce asked me concerned. “And stop banging your head.”

“I’m sorry,” I said as I rubbed my head. “It’s just that whenever I like a guy, especially since I came here, Kim ends up liking him too. And you know who they all go for or flirt with? Her! I don’t know if she’s doing it on purpose or not, but I hate it ARGH!” I said as I rested up against the wall.

“I’m sorry dear,” Joyce said as she went to give me a hug.

I was hugging her back when I saw that the pizza guy had finally arrived. “The food’s here,” I said as we released each other.

I went into the doors between the lobby and the actual outside and signed the slip for the pizza, since I paid with a credit card. I handed Joyce the cheesy bread as we went back into our dorm and luckily, the elevator was right there so we rode it up. I opened the box of cheesy bread and took a piece of it out, because I was starving.

“We can talk about this later,” she told me after we got off the elevator and headed to our room.

I opened the door, and walked into the room. I saw Tyler and Noah playing Guitar hero, and they were really into it. “I have food,” I said as Joyce came in after me.

I went farther into the room, and I saw Kim on Joyce’s bed, and Darrin was sitting on my bed. He was giving her one of the most evil glares I have ever seen. “Darrin, why do you look so grumpy?” I asked going over and sitting next to him.

“I’ll tell you about it later,” he said as he opened the box I had and took a slice out.

I decided that I would just leave it at that until a later time when I could talk to him in private.  Until then, I would just enjoy the moment.

About an hour or so later, Darrin went in his duffle bag, and revealed that he had brought some alcohol with him. He brought some Captain, along some Jack, whiskey and different kinds of Vodka, and also some Jaeger. Luckily, he brought a few shot glasses because we only had two left, since a couple of them broke the last time we drank. I closed the blinds and we arranged them on the windowsill. Joyce went over and locked the door, that way no one could just burst in on us drinking.

“You sure do have a vast selection. Why did you bring so much?” I asked as I took a shot glass and filled it with some Captain.

“Well, I figured that I’d party it up while I’m here. Plus, you never know how big a party could get,” he said as he took and filled a shot of Smirnoff Vodka.

“Ready?” I asked as I raised my shot.

            “Ready,” he said raising his.

We quickly tipped the shots back and gave each other a high five. In between the chatting, I had about 3 more shots of captain, and about 3 shots of vodka. So I guess that you could say I was feeling really good. Sometime in between, Dave came up to the room to hang out and chat. He didn’t drink because he took some aspirin, and that wouldn’t go well with the alcohol.

At one point, Dave told Tyler that he wanted to talk to him, so they went out into the hall to talk. I looked at my watch and saw that it was about 1 in the morning. We flipped on the TV and began to channel surf. There was nothing on so we decided that we were going to play a card game.

I took a shot of Jaeger and went towards the door. “Dear, where are you going?” Joyce asked coming towards me.

“I’m gonna go get Tyler and Dave s-so we can play the card game,” I slurred. “It’ll be more fun if they play with us.

“I’m going out there with you. I don’t trust your walking or talking abilities dear,” she said as she put an arm around me.

I went along with it, knowing that it would be safer that way. “Fine,” I said as I unlocked the door and stepped out into the hallway. I went towards the front of the hall, where there was a lot of room to talk, and I saw no one there. So Joyce and I made our way down the hallway until we came to the studies.

The kitchenette was locked, so they weren’t in there. I went to one of the study doors and opened and didn’t see anyone in there either. “I guess they’re in the other study,” I said to Joyce as we walked over towards the door.

I suddenly had a bad feeling in my gut. Something told me that I didn’t want to see what was behind that door. “Joyce, could you please look inside there please?” I asked, kneeling down on my knees.

She gave me a concerned look. “Sure.” She opened the door and took a peek inside. I heard her make a “meep” sound and she quickly shut the door. “I suggest that we just walk away. You really don’t want to see that,” she said helping me up.

Suddenly, I felt calm and cool, as if I had not just drank any alcohol. I opened the door a crack and saw Dave and Tyler in a heavy make out session. I had enough of guys and their games. “Bastard!” I yelled through the crack. I saw them jump, and I shut the door and ran for my room.
