Just a Dare ~Chapter 13~
|
“Darrin, what are you doing here?” I asked as he stopped right in front of me.
“What, are you unhappy to see me?” he asked with a frown.
“It’s not that. It’s just I didn’t expect anyone to drive over 180 miles just to come and visit me. This is just so… unexpected.” I said, looking at him, unsure of what to do.
“Well, there was nothing going on at Kent this weekend, so I thought, what the heck, this would be a great time to visit you and see what you’ve really been up to. To tell you the truth, I’ve actually missed you,” he said pulling me in for a tight embrace.
Suddenly I heard an “ahem” come from behind me, and remembered that Tyler had followed me outside. This was really embarrassing.
“Um, Tyler, this is Darrin. We went to high school together. Darrin, this is Tyler, he’s, uh…” I said stumbling over what to say.
“Well, we’re basically together, but it’s unofficial,” said Tyler as he put one arm around my waist and shook Darrin’s hand with his free hand.
Darrin accepted his hand and shook it, eyeing us warily. “So, what is there around here to do that is fun?” he asked, after ending the handshake.
“Haha, well you see, there is actually nothing fun to do here at EMU, unless there’s a party going on somewhere,” said Tyler as he glared at Darrin.
“Well, we could always take a walk. It’s just a little chilly, so I don’t think that it’ll be too bad to walk around. You can see campus and stuff,” I said looking back and forth between the two.
“I guess that might be cool. We can do that later. But first, is it possible to get some food? I haven’t eaten in a few hours,” he said putting a hand on his stomach.
“Well, Tyler and I just got done eating,” I said. I looked at the expression on Darrin’s face and he was pleading with me to find him food. “But I guess if you’re really hungry, we could always go with you to get something,” I offered.
“Actually, I think that I’m just gonna go back to my room for a while. Call me when you’re done,” Tyler said as he headed up the steps and into the building.
“Alright, see you later Tyler,” I called after him. “So, what do you have a taste for?” I asked him. “In the eateries, we have Sunset strips, which is a chicken place, we have A&W, an Asian cuisine pace, Freshens, which is basically Ice cream and smoothies, Sbarros, but I don’t recommend it, and then a place where you can get wraps and sandwiches.”
“Is there anything else?” he asked.
“Well, over in the Student Center over the hill, we have Wendy’s, Taco Bell, KFC, Panda Express, Subway, another Sbarros, and Starbucks. Does any of that sound good to you?”
He stood there and thought for a minute or two before finally answering my question. “I think that we should head over to the Student Center. Which way do we go?” he asked quickly spinning around in circles.
I grabbed a hold of his shoulders and stopped him. “It’s right over top of the hill over there,” I said as I pointed him to where the hill was. We started walking towards the hill, going past the cars in the parking lot, when suddenly Darrin stopped in his tracks.
“So, what is with you and that Tyler guy?” he asked as he turned towards me.
I just looked ahead started walking again. “Well, it’s kind of complicated. We were actually walking it over when I got your phone call,” I said glancing at him.
“Oh really,” Darrin said glancing over at me and raising an eyebrow. “Would this happen to be the guy that was having a hard time choosing between you and another girl?”
“Uh, yeah, he’s the one,” I said, while mentally saying, “Yeah, but only, it was between me and a guy, for you see, Tyler is bisexual.” But I wouldn’t do it, for that would be really inconsiderate.
“But still, if he was even considering choosing someone else other than you, why would you still want to be with him?” he asked disbelievingly.
“It’s hard to just stop having feelings for a person Darrin. I thought you would know that,” I said giving him a knowing glance as we started up the hill.
He gave a slight blush. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, come on. Everyone knows that you could never get over Monica. The way that you always looked at her, or got so jealous whenever she would get a new boyfriend.”
“That was different,” he said. “I was in love with her. But what does that matter? I’m completely over her now,” he said walking ahead of me.
“How is that different? It still proves that it’s not easy to get over someone,” I say as we reached the top of the hill and onto another sidewalk.
“Whatever. This discussion is over. But I still don’t think that you should date him,” he added under his breath.
I was still able to hear the last part of what he said. “For your information, I can date whomever I want. Why should I take advice from you when you have decided to ignore me all through high school!” I demanded.
He stopped and put his hands on my shoulders to make me stop with him. “Mel, I care for you. I always have. I just don’t want to see you get hurt by this guy. What if he decides later on that he wants the other person instead?”
“I don’t want to think about that,” I said looking away as a tear appeared in an eye.
“Shh, don’t cry. I didn’t mean to upset you. I’m never good at these things,” he joked pulling me into a hug.
“I can’t help it. What if you said is right? I couldn’t take it! It’s just that I really think that I love this guy,” I said blabbing my whole heart out to him while crying on his shoulder.
“Well, in that case, if you really do love him, you just have to follow your heart and go through with it,” he said while stroking my hair. “You’ll never know until you try, which is why I came up here.”
“You came up here because you like me?” I asked, somewhat calmly, tears still coming out.
“Yeah, but I guess I’ll just have to wait. But I’ll always be here incase you need me,” he said giving my hand a squeeze. With just that one little touch of kindness from him, I felt butterflies in my stomach all over again. There was just something about him that wouldn’t let me stop liking him. This was so not good.
“Thanks,” I said smiling at him. “Now, let’s go get food,” I said drying my tears and starting to walk again.
“Actually, I lied about that. I actually stopped and got food on the way here. I only said that because I wanted to get you away from Tyler so that we could talk,” he said looking at the ground.
“Why you,” I said giving him a punch in the shoulder.
“I know I deserve that. But since we’re already halfway there, can’t we still go check it out?” he pleaded with puppy dog eyes.
“I guess we could,” I said giving him a slight nudge.
We then finished walking to the Student Center hand in hand. It was actually fun just hanging out with Darrin. I got to see a side of him that I had never seen while we were in high school. Who knew that he could be so funny?
First we stopped off in Savage Geckos, which is an arcade. We played a game of pool, in which he won. That was only because I accidentally knocked the eight ball in before all the rest of mine were in. We also played Guitar Hero 2 for a bit, and then faced off in DDR, which I won.
After spending about an hour in there, we left and went to the lobby shop to get something to drink. We then went into the food court to sit down.
Five minutes later after we sat down, there was a pair of hands blindfolded over my eyes. “Guess who,” said the voice. I could recognize that voice anywhere.
