        The rest of Wednesday and all of Thursday passed in a blur. If you were to ask what I ate, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. Tyler tried to talk to me, but I still wasn’t in the mood to listen to him. I felt so bad about it though. He’s one of my best friends here, and I’m ignoring him. I was beginning to miss him. I still saw him at night when I would hang out with Ashley and all of them, but I kept my distance from him, and just say hi, so the others wouldn’t get on my case for being mean to him. I guess I could talk to him and find out what was going on in his head.

        I had just gotten out of my 1:00 pm class when I got a call. I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Tyler again. “Hello,” I said as my voice waivered a little.

        “Hey Mel. I know you probably won’t, but do you want to get lunch with me?”

        I hesitated a moment before I gave him my answer. “Yeah, I’ll eat with you.”

        I could hear the excitement in his voice. “Really? That’s great. I’ll meet you in the lobby in about 10 minutes, is that okay?”

        “That’s fine with me,” I said laughing at his excitement. “I’ll see you soon.”

        I walked at a quick pace back to my dorm room to drop off my book bag, and primp myself a little bit to look nice. I quickly took a look in the bathroom mirror, and then headed down to the lobby to meet Tyler.

        I went down there and saw my friend Jeff standing by the desk so I went to talk to him. His last name is Quigley, so everyone calls him that. “Hey Quigley, what’s up?” I said patting him on the back.

        “Not much, how bout you?” he said turning to look at me.

        “I’m just waiting for Tyler to get down here so we can go get some food.” I said as I leaned on the front desk.

        “Ah, I see,” he said. “What’s going on between you two anyways?”

        “What do you mean ‘what’s going on’?” I asked.

        “Dude, it’s so obvious that you two like each other. I was just wondering if you two had done anything about it yet.” He said, showing off his big goofy grin.

        “At the moment, nothing has happened. I really don’t think it’s any of your business either. But, if something does happen, I’ll be sure to let you know, okay quigs?” I said giving him a light punch in the shoulder.

        At that moment, the door that leads to the dorm where Tyler stays opened, and out he walked.

        “There he is. I haven’t talked to him in a few days. Hopefully it all goes well. I’ll talk to you later Jeff.”

        “Yeah, I’ll catch ya later Melanie.”

        “You ready?” Tyler asked as he got close to me.

        “Yeah, let’s go,” I said as we started walking.

        We fell into step along the way, with neither of us talking. Then out of nowhere, he decided to butt-bump me. He looked over at me and gave me this big goofy smile. You can’t butt-bump a person and expect to get away with it, so I butt-bumped him back. Since he is scrawnier that I am, he went pretty far when I bumped him. It felt good to be joking around with him again.

        We walked into the Eateries, and as soon as we were inside, he made a grab for my hand, and I let him keep it there. We separated so we could get our different foods. I got mine before his was done, so I stood with him in the line. I kept quiet, not knowing what to say in this situation.

        He finally got his food, so we got into the line and paid for it. We then went and sat in one of the booths along the wall. It was a little awkward for the first few minutes, while we were both thinking of the other night.

        “So,” I said, unsure of what really to say.

        “Melanie, I’ve missed hanging out with you these past couple of days. It was so… not normal, and I don’t want to do that anymore.” He said with a trace of sadness to his voice.

        I looked into his eyes and saw the pain there. Pain from feeling like he was abandoned or unwanted. Pain from me treating him the way I did.

        “I’m sorry Tyler,” I said taking his hand. “But when that you said you were stuck between me and Dave, I freaked out. I have been in that situation many times where it has been between me and another person. They chose the other person every single time, so I said those things because it would be easier for me to get over you if I knew that I was the second choice. I’m sorry that I let my feelings get in the way of our friendship.”

        “I can understand where you’re coming from,” he said looking into my eyes. “I’ve been in your position a couple times. Except, at one point I was one of the lucky ones that was actually chosen. So, I know how it feels to be in your shoes.”

        “So, we’re good? Still friends?”

        He gave me a weird look. “Friends? Do you really want to be friends?” He said raising an eyebrow.

        “Of course I want to be friends! What else could we be? Being just friends is better than being nothing at all, even if that means I have to put up with seeing you and Dave together.”

        “Melanie, Dave and I aren’t together,” he said with a chuckle.

        “Wait, you’re not together? But then…”

        “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you, but you won’t hear any of it. I bet you even deleted the message that I sent you on facebook, didn’t you?”

        “Yeah, I did,” I said guiltily.

        “I figured that much because in that message, I said that I would rather have you over Dave. When you said that night that you didn’t really want to see me that much, I just about died. Just the thought about being without you is unbearable, for you see, I’m in love with you too.”

        I just sat there in shock. Inside I was bursting with joy, but on the outside, I did not know how to react. All of a sudden, it seemed as if it had just gotten 20 degrees warmer in there. “Tyler, do you think we could finish this conversation back upstairs?” I asked standing up and grabbing my stuff.

        “That’s fine,” he said also standing up and grabbing his stuff.

        We threw our trash away and went out into the lobby. We were about halfway there when I received a call. I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Darrin. “What?”

        “I think that you should go outside.” He said with a trace of excitement in his voice.

        “Oh really? And why should I go outside?” I asked heading to the doors that lead to the front of the building.

        “It’s just so nice outside, and I think that you would enjoy it.”

        I gave Tyler a shrug and went outside. “Ok, I’m outside, are you happy now? I said in an exasperated voice.

        “Look to your right,” he said.

        I slowly looked over to my right, and I saw him standing there on the sidewalk about twenty feet away.

        “Surprise!” he said walking towards me. Oh boy, what a surprise it was.
