Ome Time Won't Hurt
|
Beat after beat her feet smacked rhythmically down on the dirt, her chest heaving up and down as she jogged down the trail. It was morning and the air smelt fresh after it had just rained. The mist was rolling in slowly, giving Marlene a feeling of being alone and being able to get her thoughts together after last night. She saw the way that her friends always acted when they were doped out on drugs. But she didn’t know if whether last night went too far or not.
Being bored on a Thursday night long ago, she didn’t know what to do. She was feeling a little rebellious anyway and decided to join them on this night. “What would it hurt to try a little weed? One time couldn’t hurt, could it?” she thought to herself.
So she tried it. This feeling that she felt was odd. A sort of calm and happiness overcame her. She thought that she would be out of her mind, or not know who she was or what she was doing, like she had heard or what came from the typical stereotype of it, but it was the complete opposite.
She started going out and hitting it with them more and more. To her, it wasn’t an obsession or addiction. She knew how to say no, and often did on some nights. She didn’t get the “craving” for it that some others had. It was something that calmed her and made her more at ease and helped her sort out her stress and problems that she had been having in school. She felt better than she had ever felt her whole life.
But last night, something new and unexpected happened. Her group went out last night to smoke, when they bumped into someone they knew who also smoked. But this person was far gone, and they were on something else.
While everyone else crowded around him to talk with him, Marlene stood away, unsure of what to do. Who knows what he could have been on? She was about to say something when she saw the guy give them a couple of different bags. She didn’t know exactly what they were, but she knew that they weren’t good.
She stood there in shock, unbelieving that they would do this. Words about a party that Friday night and how they all should go floated into her ears. She snapped back to reality as she heard choruses of “goodbye” being said to the guy as she saw him him walk away.
Just as she was about to turn around and head back to her dorm, she saw one of her friends open a bag and take some of the contents and sniff it. She ran over to him and shook him.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she half shouted at him.
“Oh come on Marlene, it’s harmless stuff. Wanna try some?” he asked shoving the bag in her direction.
“I’d rather not kill myself, thank you very much.” She replied pushing the bag away from her. She then turned on the whole group. “You guys are so stupid! What were you thinking taking those bags from him?”
“Oh come on, one time won’t hurt us.” Her friend Amanda joined in.
“You know what/ Never mind. But if something bad happens to you, don’t come crying to me,” Marlene said as she left them to do whatever they did.
She stopped along the trail in mid-thought. That party was tonight. Should she go so she could keep an eye on them, or just leave them alone? Being the worry wart that she was, she decided to go to make sure they were all safe.
At the party that night, all was going fun. A typical college party was all it was, along with plenty of cheap jokes. As the night wore on, the number of guests died down. At about 2:30, the only people left were her, her friends, the guy from last night and the host. It was dead and no one was around, so they decided that they were going to toke it up, so they headed into the basement.
Marlene declined the hit, but went and sat down there with them anyways. It was just simple weed they were smoking, until the guy pulled out a bag. She narrowed her eyes in suspicion, not feeling too sure about it.
“Hey, you guys want some?” he asked holding the bag out.
“Sure, I’ll try some,” said her friend Kendra as she reached for the bag.
“Kendra, wait! You don’t even know what that is!” Marlene warned.
Everyone just looked around at each other and shrugged. “Dude, it’s just some of the white stuff, mixed with a few of my favorites,” said the guy holding the bag.
Kendra took the bag and sniffed some of the contents in it.
“Why did you do that! You don’t know what it will do to you!” Marlene said. She started to panic and fret, and the next thing she knew she was consumed with blackness.
She awoke hours later and looked at her watch. The time read 11:30. “How long have I been out?” she thought to herself.
She slowly saw the others start to get up as well. In a few minutes everyone except for Kendra was sitting up.
Then Marlene noticed that she had a head-ache. ‘What happened last night?” she asked rubbing a sore spot on her head.
“Well, you started freaking out after Kendra sniffed the stuff that was in the bag, and then bozo over there knocked you in the head with a frying pan. After that, we all sort of just crashed.”
“That makes sense. We really should get going. I’ll go wake up Kendra.” Said Marlene heading over to where Kendra was.
“Time to get up sleepy head,” She said as she shook her gently. There was no respsonse, so she shook her more firmly this time. “Come on Kendra, wake up!” she nearly yelled. “Guys, she won’t wake up!”
With shaking fingers, Marlene checked her for a pulse. She tried her wrist, but found none. She tried listening for a heartbeat, but didn’t hear that either. “Guys, she doesn’t have a heartbeat. I think she’s dead!”
911 was called and rushed to the house. They pronounced Kendra dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed that the mix of drugs was too much for her body to deal with.
A few days later, they all attended her funeral. After the funeral, Marlene decided that she needed to take action.
Marlene went and talked to the school shrink the next day. “If only I had tried harder to stop her from taking that she would still be here! I warned her but she just wouldn’t listen. It’s all my fault.” She said.
“It’s not your fault. It was her own fault for choosing to ignore you.”
Marlene sat there contemplating what to do. “I want others to learn from what happened to her. Things need to change, and I want to help.”
