            Well, of course I had to call Tyler and talk to him.  Something happened between us last night, and I have to find out what it was. I am so confused at the moment. I really like Tyler, but I want to see where things might lead between Jack and me. 

            I picked up my cell and called Tyler. I think that he must be really anxious to talk because he answered it on the first ring. “Hello?” he said.

            “Hey Tyler, it’s me, Melanie.” I said.

            “Good. Listen, we need to talk about last night. Can you meet me downstairs in say, like 10 minutes?” he asked.

            “Yeah, I’ll meet you down there in 10. I’ll see you in a bit,” I said as we hung up the phone.

            Joyce just looked at me curiously. “So, what does Tyler want to talk to you about?” she asked. 

           “Well, last night when Tyler came up to fetch me, we kinda kissed,” I said.

            I could tell that she was shocked. She just stood there in silence for a minute with her jaw dropped and her eyes wider. “You did what? Why didn’t you tell someone there was something going on?” she said.

            “I don’t even know if there is something going on between us. That is why I him and I are going to talk. I’m meeting him downstairs in ten-ish minutes. Oh Joyce, I’m definitely nervous. I don’t know what’s gonna happen.” I said fidgeting.

            “You’ll be fine. Just go with the flow, and just let whatever happens, happen,” she said giving me a reassuring pat on the back.

            “But what am I supposed to do about Jack?” I asked.

            “Who?” she said.

            “The guy from last night!” I said with exasperation. “I really like Tyler, but I really want to see where this, whatever it may be, with Jack goes.” 

           “I understand. Well, you’re stuck. I don’t know what to tell you. I’m sure that something will happen, and that you just go with it.” She said.

            I took a glance at my watch. “I’ve got to go!” I said rushing out of the room. 

           “Good luck!” she called after me. 

            A minute later I was standing down in the lobby waiting for Tyler. He wasn’t down there yet, so I went over and checked to see if there was anything in the mailbox. To my surprise, there was actually something in there. I took it out to inspect, but it was nothing more than a flier of some of the events going on around campus. There were two in there, so I just left Joyce’s in there, and threw my copy away. Well, that was a good way to waste a minute.

             I looked around, and there was still no sign of him. So, I decided to go around and look at the posters and fliers on the wall. I think I was standing there for at least 5 minutes, rereading the posters over again when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around, and there he was, finally. 

           “I’m sorry that I’m late, but I got a call from Dave, and I lost track of time.” He said with a shrug of his shoulders. “Come on, let’s go into the eateries and talk,” he said leading the way. 

           In my mind, I was seething. Dave called him. Dave is one of our friend’s, and basically Tyler’s best friend here. It annoys me, because I will be hanging out with Tyler, and we are just fine, and then who calls? Dave. And then he has to leave to go hang out with Dave, and I will have spent barely any time with him. He ruins everything! And when those two are in the same room, they’re just about inseparable. It drives me nuts! 

           Well anyways, we were heading to the eateries. It’s like a food court thing, and its located in between the freshman dorms. As we entered the doors, he said, “Do you want to get some food, or do you just want to go sit and talk?”

             “I’m not hungry at the moment. So let’s go grab a booth,” I said leading the way towards a booth. We sat in the one by the corner.

             We just sat there in silence for about a minute. I was drumming my fingers on the table-top when I could no longer bear the silence. “So, about last night.”

            “Melanie, to tell you the truth, I think that last night should be forgotten,” he said quickly. 

           I just stared at him with shock. I can’t believe that he had just said that! He’s supposed to be my friend! Don’t you think that he could have found a better way to let me down? I can’t believe him! The nerve! 

           “Melanie, please say something. You’re scaring me,” he said as he put his hand over mine. 

           I quickly took my hand out from under his. “You think that I should forget about it? Why?” I asked him through gritted teeth. 

           “To tell you the truth, I shouldn’t have kissed you. There is someone that I really like, and I want to see where that goes. So I think it would be best if we just forgot about it and try to move on,” in an attempt to try to make me understand. Luckily for him it worked, I think. 

           “I get it. I’m just not a special enough person for you to try and take a chance with me when you don’t even know if the person you are after is interested. Very smart. It’s a good thing I’m having dinner with Jack tonight.” I said. 

           “Jack? Who is Jack?” he demanded.  He sounded almost protective. 

           “Oh, he was the guy that I kissed last night for the dare. I ran into him today, and he suggested that we go get dinner.” I said happily. 

           “Mel, you can’t go to dinner with him,” he stated.

            “It’s too late for that. We already made plans. What do you have against him anyways?” I said, daring him to defy me. 

           “I just have a bad feeling about him. There’s something about him that just doesn’t seem right. I don’t want you getting hurt,” he said looking into my eyes. 

           “It’s too late for that,” I muttered under my breath. “Thanks for your concern, but I am going to dinner with Jack whether you like it or not. I’m a big girl, I can look out for myself.” I said getting up and walking away from the table.

            I had barely made it five steps before I felt his arm around my wrist. He spun me around to face him. “Are you mad at me?” he asked. 

           It took all the strength I had to reply to him calmly. “Tyler, I believe that it would be in your best interest to let go of me and just leave me alone for awhile. I just can’t be around you at the moment.”

            I looked up into his eyes and was surprised by what I found there. I saw concern stated plainly. There was another look, but I couldn’t tell what it was. I turned around and saw Dave walking in. I quickly walked by with a quick “Hi,” to him and made my way back to my dorm. As soon as I got back to my room, I just laid on my bed and cried.
